The simplest and easiest sprint win I've even seen. His team mates led him out and just moved out of the way.

No 33.

Malinga the Swinga

The sacrifice from Cav's teammates is unbelievable. He has world champions leading him out which shows the confidence his team have on Cav to deliver.

Hopefully he can beat the stage wins record this year.

Up Ventoux today.

Twice.

That's just cruel.

Hope Cav can haul himself to the finish line within the time limit.

I'd love to see Cav win in Paris.

Trying to check the maps but not all that successfully. Are both Ventoux descents the same today?

They climb difficult way first then the second climb, they go the even more difficult way. If Cav survives, then I reckon he gets green jersey. Will be a ****er of a day though.

I expect a hefty sized grupetto today with lots of nervous sprinters in it. If one of the GC boys goes for it then it will be even worse as the cut off time will diminish. I think Carapaz will go shit or bust today.

What a strange day that was.

Greipel in the break, 13 minutes up on the peloton.

Nothing happening in the GC battle.

Very weird indeed.

Not really.

Day off after the hard stages. Happens every year.

Gives an opportunity for a breakaway to stick.

 Classic midrace lazy day.

Cav draws level on Merckx with 34 stages with another straightforward win. Barring an accident he's got the chance to put a few between them.

2 more sprint stages for anyone that makes the time limit over the mountains.

Next Friday, then Paris on the Sunday.

It's quite possible the chance for 35th and record breaking will be Paris.

Boris to declare another bank holiday if Cavendish beats Merckx' record?

Tricky one for Sports Personality of the Year if he wins in Paris.

All roads lead to Gorgie

Paris would be some stage for Cavendish to break the record, a lot of tough mountain stages before then plus a lot of the sprinters will wan't the accolade of winning in the capital as well. Time will tell but what a record to achieve as it stands!

IF he gets to Paris, the stage is his to lose.

Best Sprinter in the Tour and best lead out train as well.

I take it Deceuninck will just bubble-wrap him for the next week? They've got nobody going for GC or grimpeur, have they?

Anyone used to do the fantasy football through the post back in the day?

It was basically FM but sent to you on A4 sheets of paper.

It was good because you were doing transfer deals with real people.

Amazing. Fights back from illness that could have ended his career, massive dry spell with no wins, taken back by Quickstep in an almost sentimental gesture by them, not selected for the tour, finds out a few days before it starts he in.
And he only goes and bloody equals the record.

Mattia Cattaneo is 11th, 15 min 35 sec off lead.

A podium (1st to 3rd) is probably out of reach but you never know with 5 mountain stages ahead. Julian Alaphillipe is next on General Classification (GC) 23rd and 52 minutes off lead. They will compete but also protect and support Cavendish to make the time limit.

Cavendish is riding like a man possessed. His team are giving him every chance by leading him out superbly and he is making the most of each opportunity.

All about “football’s coming home” in England

Lucky over here on the IOM we’ve got the Manx Missile as the main item on the news!

incredible stuff after his long term illness and injuries

I've often wondered if he was in Shetland for the 2005 Island Games. Checking informs me that he wasn't :( - that was the year he turned professional.

He did win the criterium in Guernsey in 2003.

I’m Scottish born in Scotland!

If you are born here you are Manx not Irish or English

IOM is not part of UK and Tynwald is the longest surviving Parliament in the world

Kippers the TT is what it’s known for!

and Cavendish

A pretty undramatic day with a good breakaway win from Mollema. Martin moving up in the GC will have all of France praying Pogacar has a disaster somehow and end their massive wait for a winner that hasn’t looked like ending for a long time. I can’t see it though.

Good win for Kuss and not a lot happening apart from France’s hopes of Guillame Martin keeping second vanishing. I still fancy Carapaz for 2nd on the podium though. Some of that climbing today just looked horrible, I went for a spin out to South Queensferry and back early afternoon and watched the last 50km of the stage when I got home and it made the climb back out of Queensferry look a bit pathetic.

The rider I mentioned earlier in the thread that was cycling ahead of the tour, fully independent and carrying his tent etc has finished. The plan was to reach the end on the morning of the last day but he beasted on and finished at 5.30am this morning. Including the laps of the Champs. He also didn't do the coach or plane transfers between stages so his run into Paris was 540Km. Unbelievable effort and raised over £350k for charity.

If there was a rider with a chance of winning the TT and he happened to have a couple of team mates starting within a few places of him could they ride it as a mini team-TT?

Or is it all arranged so that sort of thing just wouldn't be practicable?

Nah, that’s not allowed.

During a TT you’re not allowed to sit on the wheel of another rider. If you’re passing them you need to give them a wide berth regardless of what team they’re cycling for.

Ah, well - another potential loophole closes

I guess it does make perfect sense.

No chance for Cavendish today.

Breakaways too far ahead. Saying on tv its because it's the last chance for a lot of teams to win a stage.

Paris it is then.

Missed the Pyrenees due to being on holiday in Orkney with no TV, no internet and no 4G.

Seems I missed a good few stages, with Pog taking a couple of stage wins just to assert his dominance of this one-horse Tour.

Hopefully Cav can do the business on the Champs Elysees on Sunday.

How was it?

Seen a boy on the news saying folk should at least try going without social media for 6 months (he doesn't use it at all)

Quite a clever bloke that worked in Silicon Valley and has sold a company to Google.

Basically saying it's all set up to control you.

Weather was most un-Orkney like. No wind, even had some clear skies.

Seen all the neolithic sites we could that were still open and ate out as often as we could.

Glad I missed the fitba final but not too happy about missing the Pyrenees stages.

Hame in time for a flat stage, a time trial and a Paris procession :what:

Riders are in Paris now so building up to the tension of the last lap and that last corner. Every year I feel myself getting anxious as they start that last lap.

And Cav takes the mid stage sprint with some ease.

They’ve moved the sodding finish line his year so it’s 700m from the last corner. So the charge around the final corner will be a bit less terrifying that when they take it full pelt in normal years. Makes sense safety wise but makes the end a bit less dramatic.
