Smoking

Gave up 6 weeks ago after having a 10 a day habit for 4 years (which seems light going by some of the responses in here).

Doing well on the whole. I’ve smoked a few times in that period but thankfully as time has passed I get more disgusted by the smell, taste, sensation etc to the point where I feel now like I’ve definitely sparked up for the last time

Vaped for the last five years but started on cigars during lockdown.

Gutted.

I found the feeling is always there, certain times especially when drinking can trigger an urge for a tab.

The two previous times I'd stopped were after hypnosis and managed about 6 years each time. Then I ended up on holiday in Egypt, sat on a riverboat at sunset on the Nile drinking beer and just thought I could really go a fag, cheap as chips over there and everyone and their dog smokes. Obviously I kidded myself on that I'll just stop when I get home....

My dear old mum smoked from when she was about 14. When she was in her mid sixties the doctor told her to stop immediately as she was showing signs of emphysema. She came home, told us she had to stop, finished the pack she had (she doesn’t like to waste money) and that was that. Never had or craved another one, she’s 90 in a couple of months.

Amazing !

Haven’t smoked a fag for 9 years I reckon. Was never a heavy smoker though smoked most when I was drinking. Like to weed vape though.

I gave up about 12 years ago. Used Champix tablets. Had to go to a counselling group too but it worked so horses for courses I suppose.

First year me & Mrs went all inclusive to Turkey for a week with money.

Following year same to Egypt

You’ve stopped poisoning yourself.

You’ll save a fortune

Be on your guard for a bit

We used to go to mainland Spain or Brussels to buy cheap baccy, (about half price to here) and the savings we made actually paid for the hols due to the amount we could legally bring back.

Don’t  smoke myself but my Dad does around 40 a day and he’s 72.

At start of lockdown I was buying him packs of 200 from Tesco at a cost of £113..... lasted him the week if he went easy 😱

I don't hang around long when I visit my parent as come away stinking of smoke as he still thinks he in the 70s smoking in the living room

Jings! At around roughly 5 minutes a cigarette that means he spends over 3 hours of his waking hours with a cigarette in his hand.

Says he’s smoked since he was 15 so I’d hate to see the state of his lungs, but at the moment anyway he doesn’t have any problem breathing ect

His eyes light up when I go on holiday as he’s always at me to bring him his cigs back

I stopped around the millenium time, but about five years ago I found myself having the odd wee cigar while out drinking. That warm spinning headded nicotine rush was like an old friend. The next think I know I'm buying those wee tins of cafe cremes and having half a dozen on a night out. Luckily I saw what was happening and gave myself a shake. Haven't had one since.

It looks like you're wise to it too. 👍

I gave up a year ago (light-ish smoker for 20 years) , ended up in hospital at Xmas with heart scare. After 9 days in CCU, if you could see what I saw , you'd never smoke again.

Kudos to everyone for even trying.

Hi guys, I smoked for 37 years and last Sunday decided to throw my smokes in the bin and give it up.
Well that’s me 6 days in and had some beers tonight and it’s absolutely fine....easy actually. I gave up cold turkey so no devices or patches and it’s been great. I wish I had this sudden genius idea to just toss them years ago. Anyway just putting it out there if anyone wants to pick my brains or needs some support to kick it just give me a shout.

Had my last one a few years ago, maybe as many as seven and been vaping ever since. Been vaping with zero nicotine for about a year now so you would think it would be easy to bin that too but it's not. I'm going to try again in the morning thanks to this thread. 👍

Keep going. I bought a vape thinking I needed something to replace the fags but oddly I got zilch out of it. If it helps, my missus also gave up at same time as me (heavy smoker) and after a year she has completely binned her vape.

Small steps !!

Keep going.

I quit in my early twenties and stupidly started back up when I went through a divorce 10 years later. Found myself socialising and on nights out pinching fags off my mates then before long I was back to buying my own again. 😞

Fortunately, i settled down and got my life together. Not smoked in a couple of years now. But it just goes to show that old habits die hard 😀

I quit on the 29th of May last year.

I used Champix and haven’t touched a fag since. It hasn’t been easy and for me, the craving never really goes away. Even last week I was gagging on a fag in the works tea shack, but it did subside after 5 minutes.

I have bought a vape and I do take a puff of that when I’ve been drinking and the urge gets too strong (rather that than a fag) but it had zero nicotine.

I was 30 a day but to be honest, the money I saved has been spent on pies / chips / sweets etc. Honestly, the weight I’ve put on since quitting is incredible, about 30 KG (although I suppose lockdown also hasn’t helped)

This year will be about getting fit, as want to be able to do lots of activities with my wee boy that I’d struggle with before!

Nearly 10 years since I quit. I'd tried and failed a few times, but my heart had never really been in it. It was only when I deep down decided I didn't want it, when I realised I was paying Philip Morris to give me a slow, painful, smelly death that I quit.

I did cold turkey, set a date and stuck to it. On my last day I had too many left so I forced myself through them all - absolutely ****ing disgusted by the time I went to bed.

I've never had a single one since

Well done mate, just do it, I’m not saying it’s easy but once you commit it’s the same thing just never take another smoke.

Different strokes for different folks as they say, but it worked for me. My lasting memory of fags is that last one, manky, stinky, unwanted.

I had a similar experience... If anything I detest the smell of cigarettes even more 2nd time around, bitterly regret starting again but am 4+ years in from stopping 2nd time around and wont make tje same mistake twice.

I am embarrassed to say I smoke now and then. Thais the bizarre thing I can go weeks without one then buy 20 and smoke them all that night then never have another packet for another month  I've never been a heavy smoker as i had what it does to my breathing and chest .  Makes me nose all stuffy too. Ill have one or two when im out at the pub but thats about.   Last packet was a month ago. But then writing this and also seeing people smoke in the street or even on telly gets me thinking about one , but I have strong willpower and usually for the most refrain.

I was lucky to get out early.

Smoking culture at school and started when I was 13.

Aged 19, didn't really light a cig properly, had to take a few quick drags to get it going, which tasted horrid, and huffily stubbed it out. Picked up the pack, crushed them and that was that.

I had no inkling as I was opening that brand new pack that, within a minute, I'd give up.

Only near thing I had was about 2 days later. Decided I needed a smoke, walked to the local shop but there was a queue. Only a few folk in it but that minute of conflict did the trick. Come my turn I hesitated for a few seconds then picked up a Marathon instead.

Good luck to those who are quitting/have quit. If you do decide to smoke again don't act on it right away. The 5 minutes or so that I had between deciding to smoke and actually being at the point of making the purchase was enough to stop me.

I still have the Marathon as a reminder.

Superb. Well done.

I am genuinely happy for anyone who beats any addiction, be it smoking, alcohol or drugs. The benefits to stopping any of them are unreal. Not only have you noticed a change in your finances but I'm sure also a change in your health. Despite putting on wait, which was expected, you'll be breathing better and your teeth and skin will be in better nick. Not to mention you won't be stinking of smoke anymore.

Enjoy the cruise, it's deserved. Quitting an addiction is never an easy thing and you should feel very proud.

I went about 25 years of my life without really ever touching a fag, then increasingly found myself having the odd one on nights out when in the company of those who do. Now for the past 3 or 4 months I've found myself pretty much full on smoking. I'm not a rapid chainsmoker, a 20-pack lasts me 2 to 3 days, but what was something that was harmless fun while drinking has really grown on me subconsciously.

Think I've got quite an addictive personality tbh. Moving into my Mums a few months ago meant I've got more money than I've ever had to fritter away, so naturally found myself in the pub most nights. Deciding I wanted to calm the drinking, I've just somehow found myself in the habit of smoking instead. I feel almost compelled to spend money on stuff when I have it, then end up spending the last week or 2 of the month on the bare bones of my arse wishing I had money to go and do something. Never ending cycle it seems.

Maybe getting confused, but it was laid on by Linlithgow and District Hearts SC ? and the civil service club was booked prematch. Anyone reading feel free to correct me. I'm sure your other half was there too.

Edit it might have been 5 years ago even.
