Expensive watches

Watching these shopping channels selling time pieces, I may be wrong here and happy to be corrected but a watch tells the time for me that's all I need, who the **** cares what it looks like as long as it tells the time which is it's primary function

So we can presume you buy your clothes and shoes from Primark or Tesco if something only has to carry out a basic function? Why buy Levi jeans or Adidas trainers when you can get something that does the same job for less than a tenner? People like nice things. It’s human nature.

Edit. It’s a while since I watched a shopping panel but I’m not sure any of them sell good watches, and certainly not expensive ones by watch price standards.

You can presume what you like you don't know me however willing to test your clothes against mine,  it was a simple question

Well that’s an unexpectedly aggressive reply. I bow to you and your clothes which are obviously more expensive than mine.

When it comes to clothes the better quality ones will be more comfortable and longer lasting.

A sekonda watch and a Rolex will probably last just as long and do the same function 🤷🏻‍♂️

They do, which is why I don’t buy cheap clothes. The watch thing is more objective, the Rolex will feel more special and almost definitely look better. It will also last a lifetime if serviced properly. It’s like anything people like nice things, just look at the car market as a more realistic comparison, a Kia does everything a top German marque will do. But nobody aspires to a Kia.

I guy I know continually tells me that his gold Rolex Submariner is an investment, as it's only going to increase in value.  If that's true, I doubt you could say that about a Sekonda.

There's no reason that a Sekonda and a Rolex can't exist next to each other. It would almost certainly cost more than what the Sekonda was worth to keep it alive as long as a Rolex though. Whilst costly to service the Rolex it would probably always be worthwhile whilst the Sekonda could just be replaced.

Quite like a Casio me.

I think an expensive watch these days is more an expression of one's wealth rather than having the functional use it was intended for. The time on your phone is more accurate than a Rolex.

A lot of preowned Rolex watches are more expensive to buy than new ones from an AD due to demand outstripping supply. It's very difficult to get most of the Rolex models

at the moment.

You could buy a brand new Submariner from an AD and sell it straight away on the internet for several grand more.

Wish I bought one a few years ago when they were readily available.

🤣🤣🤣

So you get why people buy Moncler, Gucci, Vivienne Westwood etc. but you don't get paying good money for a good watch?

And 2 and a half gees for a watch isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things tbh.

Actually, thanks for this thread, I'm gonnae get myself a nice watch and a shite watch for work, then I don't need to take my phone with me. :thumb:

You actually should. JKB is quite bad for jumping to the wrong conclusion. I did the exact same thing on a different thread and it was thought my post was my own opinion.

I've always had the same opinion about watches as you - surely there are much better ways to spend your money. However, if watches are your thing knock yourself out. Mrs Almost-but-not-quite-Trotter bought me a 'relatively' expensive (~$600) Citizen watch for my Christmas last year. I don't normally wear a watch, but if you're getting ready for a nice night out it feels 'good' to ut something nice on your wrist.

Probably the same reason people spend money on good suits. Yes, you can get an off-the-shelf one from Next for a hundred quid or so, but the difference between that and a custom-made, tailored one costing 25 - 30x as much is night and day based on how it looks and makes you feel (shameless plug for the best tailor in Edinburgh if anyone wants a PM btw). Different strokes for different folks.

A good friend of mine has a Patek Phillippe that his father bought many decades ago and is now worth a small fortune, so there is a degree of appreciating assets there. See this as an extreme example:

Come on, you can't argue with a seven year warranty!

I've got into watches in quite a nerdy way and admit I like relatively expensive models (although not by some standards). For me it's not an expression of wealth though (at least I hope not) but rather an appreciation of excellent craftsmanship.

I'm sure at some point I'll realise it's a waste of money (they are just trinkets afterall) but at the moment I enjoy learning about watches and the experience of acquiring new ones - although I'm finished for a while.

Theres definitely worse things to spend money on. As has been mentioned, some watches can be an investment although I dont think any of mines are.

I am just not materialistic I suppose then. Drive a basic but well maintained Skoda, wear a sekonda watch (own two) and won’t buy replace stuff such as TVs until it is in disrepair.

Prefer to save for a holiday with the money saved.

each to their own though.

Though the belief that all watches are the same cause they tell the time is clearly a nonsense. It’s like saying Harry Kane is the same as Craig Wighton as they’re both footballers.

Some watches have specialised uses. Spending a lot on a good quality diving watch makes sense as it has a practical use above telling the time. As far as telling the time is concerned, I don't see a difference between a Casio and a Rolex.

I’d guess that if someone is wearing a 7k Rolex then they probably don’t need to save for holidays

This must be a first even by JKB standards.

Bloke posts about overpriced trash on shopping channel, gets savaged by Rolex owner.

Brilliant.

Ironically, many owners of expensive watches will have this very Casio (or similar) as well.

Correct.  It's a well known and popular model the F91.  I have three myself.

Never been one to wear a watch really, so not my thing but I get it.

I like collecting football shirts and hope one day, they'll maybe be worth something in a time of need or just be interesting to look at.

Some people just like it to show off though. My girlfriends brother buys them, but just so he can show off. He bought one that cost £1,200 last year. He's 19. I don't dare tell you how he afforded it...

If you can afford an expensive one then why not. I guess its like saying why buy a supercar when you can still only do 70mph. People buy them simply because they can.

I watch CNN quite a lot and they have slots regularly about time pieces and the craftsmanship is remarkable in watches.

The money I've saved not going to the pub will go toward a decent watch.

I have to admit I for a long time aspired to some time own a Rolex. In 2013 my wife bought me a Citizen watch, the battery is recharged by the sun, it is radio controlled, changes the time itself when the summer and winter times change, when we travelled a lot to the States it changed the time zones automatically. My wife bought it for me in the States, it was on sale around $400 U.S. she as was her practise in the States moaned about the cost in our Canadian dollars and said she would just leave it there was an immediate reduction of $100. It is the best watch I have ever owned it is actually designed for pilots, does everything itself, not bad to look at, and on departing an aircraft in Vegas was asked by the flight attendant who saw it if I was a pilot.
