Half a team needed

Billy Hoyle

Recommended Posts

Today proves how many players we actually need to have a team capable of even getting top 6 next season. It’s staggering how many players in this squad need emptied as soon as possible as they are nowhere near the standard required.

Popescu, Berra , Brandon, White, Halliday, Haring,Walker, Wighton, Frear,Roberts, Henderson, Zlamal.
All nowhere near good enough.
Feel free to add to the list!!

Agreed. Only players that are capable of a top 6 side imo are Gordon, Smith, Kingsley, GMS, Boyce, Gino and Irving. Debate over what Naismith brings now, especially at that level.

That’s less than half a team needed.

Naismiths done as a striker and isn’t a good enough midfielder, that’s at championship level so will be well of the pace for top flight football next season.

Need good few changes for next season that's for sure

That was always going to be the case. Very few teams get promoted and don’t significantly rebuild their team.

You could be right. Not enough legs left in him I fear.

I think we were always going to need a squad overhaul in the summer.

We’ll win the league comfortably and unfortunately will have some bad results along the way (today was disgraceful IMO) but majority of this squad just haven’t got it.

We are crying out for pace and energy in practically every area of the pitch.

I don’t think the standard of player is the issue, it’s how they are being coached and motivated.

It's both

Motivation is a Major factor here. We are consistently not up for it in any game until its half time or we go 2 or 3 goals down

Something not right in that changing room

It’s not both. Our squad is well above the average in the top league.

My gripe with him isn’t so much that his legs have gone, that happens to most players by the age of 34 even without the injuries that naismiths had, but for someone that’s played at the level he has I’d have hoped that he would have adapted his game to compensate, he hasn’t and still tries to chase everything that moves despite not having the pace to actually close down or put pressure on anyone.

Take someone like Harry Kane, got injured and lost half a yard of pace at most yet he quickly realised that it was that half yard that allowed him to play on the shoulder of defenders so he quickly adapted his game rather than hoping he could still do what he used to be able to. I get the impression that Naismith still thinks he can be the same player he was 4/5 years ago.

Walker Frear Roberts and Halliday should never pull on a Hearts jersey again.

They are all a ******* embarrassment.

We may be a reactionary bunch of dicks sometimes, but FFS that defence has been dog shit all season. That's not all down to perosnnel. That's also about tactics and coaching. We have numerous corners create feck all. Opposition has one or two and score. But poor Berra is knackered and Halkett runs like he's shat himself. We have two top class full backs and a world class goalie. A decent hard ******* leader of a centre half is required.

Despite his goals today, Boyce isn't currently showing enough in the Championship. He really needs to step it up to get towards top 6 quality. Although we maybe aren't playing to his strengths.

Gino looks good but hasn't played that many games. Too early to judge especially given that we've only seen him at this level. Might turn out to be top 6 standard but might not.

Kingsley worries me defensively. He has been at fault at a number of goals recently. Skinned for the first penalty and even then shouldn't have pulled the attacker down.  Not the only one at fault at the third goal today, but it was his man who got in front of him to turn the ball into the net (possibly with his hand). For all his attacking threat, I'm not convinced he'll turn out to be good enough defensively to have us competing it the top half of the premiership.

Agree there will be a lot of work to do in the close season.

Harsh to put Haring on that list. He was by far one of our best players before his long term lay off.

A rule of thumb for players coming back from injury is that physically it can take 1.5 times the length of layoff to get back to where you were, so out for a month then it can take 6 weeks to get back, Haring could take more than another year to get back to where he was and we just don’t have the luxury of playing him until he gets there.

Tend to agree on both Gino and Boyce, gave them both the benefit of doubt.

I really struggle to see what Naismith brings. Slow and ponderous in possession. First touch seems to usually let him down these days. He is playing between midfield and Boyce and struggles to influence games at all. When he does get it he never seems to be able to turn and the ball goes backwards. Very worrying. But probably the least of our worries.

Defence loses to many soft goals and Robbie needs to sort that.

Think he is well aware of that and most recent signings and contract extensions tend to confirm it. Major clear out already agreed come summer.

With the budget we've got Dave if it was spent wisely we shouldn't have to but so much of our resources have been wasted on dross ! Our wage bill will be 4th biggest in Scottish football I'd guess even though we in championship

Don’t know about the wage bill bit would think relegation clauses would have kicked in.

Disagree with the op completely, we have a squad that every single manager in the championship would give their right leg for.

The problem is not the squad.

Was abysmal against Dundee last time he played. If he can’t start in front of Halliday he is aswell gone.

I'm not certain but my guess would be we paying most of the premier teams and far too many losers at Hearts

Think playing ability you are correct however we have a bunch of billy big times whose motivation and desire to win is league 2 standard. Too many of them just turn up expecting things to happen. All three league games lost we have finished very strongly and possibly should have got draws.  Only starting to play when you are 2/3 down is all about mentality and professionalism. Other than benching most of them not sure how a manager fixes that given the scale of it in our squad - Halkett, Naismith, Boyce, Halliday the biggest culprits.

Fair point, but how much of that is down to the manager?

Do you think the billy big times would get away with that shit with Walter Smith, Tommy Wright or the likes.
