Underrated films

I think with all the time we have on our hands it would be nice to start a thread for underrated stuff.

I'll start. I watched Babyteeth, an Aussie drama that I found very good. It's on Netflix, and I just picked up a film today I can't wait to watch called "Mogul Mowgli" starring the very good Riz Ahmed. I also think "Proxima" a French Astronaut film starring Eva Green looks a nice cinematic watch, it's on netflix. Anyone got any to add that people may not have heard of?

The same one I always mention when this subject comes up. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Very funny rogue in cheek detective movie set in LA with Robert Donnie Jr and Val Kilmer. One of those films that anyone who’s seen it loves it but not enough people have seen it.

The Fall.

A badly injured stuntman in early 1920's hollywood befriends a young child in hospital.
It's a stunning looking film with some great performances.

The Woodsman. I can't recall how it was critically received but its release was pretty low key.

It stars Kevin Bacon who plays a convicted paedo who returns to his hometown following his release. He tries to rebuild his life whilst fighting inner demons. A very compelling storyline.

It also features Eve, Benjamin Bratt and Michael Shannon.

I have another couple, I'm so excited and We Have A Pope. Spanish and Italian films but both excellent

The Fury of a Patient Man on Netflix is a very good Spanish movie.

Shooter, watched it 3 times over the years, and i rarely watch a film twice.

There's a tv series as well, takes a bit to get into but is also good.

The Great Escape II: The Untold Story;  Christopher Reeve stars.

Very good movie.   I think it's his best role, if not, one of his best.   Not the same style or atmospheric with music or comedy.    Mostly just drama.

Was on the SonyAction movie channel on Saturday tea time, just past.

John Findlay

I watched one yesterday called Entebbe made in 2018 which was on BBC2 the other night. Eddie Marsan, Daniel Bruhl and Rosamund Pike( very underrated actress imo), the names in it.

Vastly superior to the 1970s film Raid on Entebbe.

2 suggestions -

Guy Ritchie’s “Revolver” - much better than the press/reviewers suggested.

Circus - John Hannah, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare and a load of Brit actors. I enjoyed it at the time.

The adventures of baron munchhausen. One of the biggest flops of all time. Great film.

Very true. Lots of flops go onto be recognised as good films. The Shawshank Redemption and It’s A Wonderful Life being prime examples. Works the other way round as well, a few WTF best film Oscar winners.

Reign over me - Brilliant film even if you don’t like Adam Sandler

Hateful 8 - not sure of the reception but of the tarrentino movies this very rarely gets a mention. Brilliant.

Freddy got fingered - I must be one of the only people who could not stop laughing at this.

Anyone remember a fabulous comedy film from the mid 80s starring Denis Lawson (uncle of Ewan McGregor) called Reuben Reuben?

Great film.

Dark City never gets the recognition it deserves.

Very similar themes to The Matrix, which came out a year later.

Jennifer Connelly has never looked better. That's just a bonus to an excellent story.

Try to find the Director's Cut which removes the stupid voiceover track that actually spoils the entire plot before the film even starts.
