Peter Aliss rip

And a very accomplished golfer in his own right.  Competed at the sharp end of The Open,  played at The Masters and played in many Ryder Cups.   His father was also a top golfer.

THE voice of golf just as Bill McLaren was THE voice of Rugby Union, RIP Peter

Couldnt have said it better myself. He definitely knew what he was talking about. RIP Peter Aliss.

Heard him commentating at the masters last week and thought he didn't sound well. His voice was weak and unrecognisable.

RIP

yeah, I thought that also. His passing kind of marks the end of an era for golf broadcasting, also given the fact the bbc no longer has the Open or Masters as live events. Rip.

I'm no big fan of golf but I always enjoyed his commentary and found it very relaxing.

Thats sad ,one if the legendry sports commentators, clearly of his time and boy could he waffle but you didn't mind as he added colour to what you were watching.

Him and Alex Hay were a great partnership for the BBC.

Inimitable and colourful character that added so much in terms of wit and meaningful information when commentating. Used to love him doing around with Aliss back in the 80s. Definitely up there as one of the best and one of a kind.

The Bank of Scotland golf Society wanted him to speak at their meeting, celebrating the 300 years in existence of the bank.

He wrote back saying he doesn't do works outings.

Seem to remember the story when both agreed it was not a good idea to have an extra gin and tonic at lunch time and then discuss Coles and Hunt coming up the last fairway 😊

Another part of my childhood gone.  Listening to him commentating on the open during the school holidays.  Simpler times.

RIP

A legend. He was brilliant to listen to  and could take the hind legs of a donkey when needed.

His observation patter was great.

best golf commentator by a mile, my late father took me to Dalmahoy in the sixties for the Scottish Open i think and he patted me on the head when walking to the next tee after holing a birdie his partner that day was a Brian Huggett welsh golfer i think. RIP Peter along with the late Bill McLaren great commentators.

He did not sound well at the Masters but was still sharp as ever. He derided rightly the idea of changing courses and equipment to resist De Chambreu. A few holes at Augusta made his point.

But Henry Longurst probably deserves the title of greatest golf commentator.

Doug Sanders at the 1970 Open springs to.mind.

I text my mates that Royal Dornoch would be one Honourary Member less.

Soon to be two, when Prince Andrew gets put in the US pokey.

Why would he need to take the hind legs of a donkey?
