I got woken up this morning by the phone and got terrible news. A criminal prosecution is being raised against me for tax crime and a warrant out for my arrest.  However luckily if I pressed 1 I could halt the charges.

Looked through this thread specifically searching for such a post, Taz,

My 75 year old Mum has had two of these calls in the last few days and, whilst relaxed that it was a scam, is relieved that she's not alone and has someone to go on the run with.

Sold a corner suite on Gumtree on Saturday. I put the ad on Gumtree Edinburgh on Friday.

Must have been only 25 seconds AFTER I placed the add in which I stupidly put my mobile number on ( I Know, I know) that my mobile went and the usual Indian accent asking me about my accident.

GET TAE **** YA SCAMMING BASSAS!!!!

The scammers seem to be in overdrive just now, it's probably because we are in lock-down again so they know people will be at home.

Anyway had calls about my accident, amazon prime account and via email paypal, EE, amazon order & TV Licence all in the last week.

A Boy Named Crow

Every now and then I get the "warrant out for your arrest" ones, but from time to time it's just a recorded message in a language that sounds like Chinese. I find those ones particularly unnerving,  because I don't even know how they were trying to scam me!

Its got to the point where I have actually unplugged the house phone and only plug it back in again when I really need to use it which is close to never. Rings 3 - 4 times a day with some arsepiece trying some scam or another.

Got the text from the HMRC this morning (again) about the "refund" I am due. These bassas must have thousands of phone numbers because I always block them but they keep getting through.

Got a text last week about my Lloyds bank account with a link to their fraud squad.

Forwarded it to Lloyds.

I don’t even bank with them.

Often they are far from idiots.

Did anyone see Rip-Off Britian this morning?

They highlighted an Amazon giftcard scam.

Folks had applied for loans, only it was the scammers websites they had applied to, they got a phone call and the man on the other end was very calm & professional and sounded so convincing, anyway he said that to process the loan he needed an arrangment fee but it had to be in Amazon giftcards, long story short he kept saying that he needed more and more but not to worry it would be refunded when the loan came through, some people were scammed for £2500 or more, and needless to say they never got the loan.

A man accused of allegedly tricking a 92-year-old woman out of £160 for a fake coronavirus vaccination has been charged with fraud and common assault.

David Chambers is accused of administering the fake vaccine at her Surbiton home in London last month.

The 33-year-old, also from Surbiton, is charged with five offences including fraud and going outside in a tier four area without a good reason.

He denied the charges when he appeared before magistrates on Friday.

Mr Chambers was remanded in custody until a hearing on 12 February.

In the UK, coronavirus vaccines are free of charge and available via the NHS.

It's the bloody texts from these 5-digit numbers that do my tits in. Blah, blah bitcoin...b lah, blah watch this video...fer ****'s sake! Block number every single time and still more come through. If someone could find a way to stop ANY 5-digit number from sending me a text I'd pay for it. Then advertise it by sending out unsolicited texts...

Still get the Amazon Prime one from time to time. The last was from BT about illegal activity on my account and its going to be cancelled in 24 hours. That was 2 weeks ago and its still "live". I don't get the ones about the accident I had recently. Perhaps because I kept the guy on the phone going into great detail about my compound fracture from 1996 😁 and right at the end I ask if my claim would be affected if it was discovered that I was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time. 🤣

What annoys me is why are the phone companies, Virgin, BT , sky not putting a stop on these clowns,

and im sure my number is handed out to companies by said phone companies, that should not happen its my number and i will choose who gets it.

This was mentioned on Rip-Off Britain this morning.

Their expert was saying there is next to nothing BT etc can do to stop them as they usually originate from abroad and they can't stop them, also that most of the numbers rung are computer generated.

A bloke called my house phone "from BT" this morning and he was very concerned about my internet security. He kindly explained that an engineer was in the area working on the issue but other measures were needed to secure my system in the meantime.

He asked me to turn on one of my devices and he explicitly said to do so in my own time. I put him on speakerphone and streamed a video from a well known porn site making sure it could clearly be heard on his end.

After around a minute of this he sounded quite uncomfortable and asked what I was doing and I told him I was watching porn.  He asked "Why?". To be honest, I didn't know why. I just like winding them up. Anyway, the answer that came out was "I wanted to watch your momma and have a w***". I didn't get a chance to secure my network as we lost connection almost right away.

I got one this morning telling me (automated message) that I was having £79.99 put into my Prime account (I don't have one), press 1 to confirm it with a manager, hanging up seemed the best course of action.

  • 3 weeks later...

RoyalMail: We were unable to complete your parcel delivery due to underpayment of shipping fees. To rearrange delivery now visit:

I hopefully broke link above.  Takes you to a page telling you that you owe just under £3 in fees to release a package and asks for you to enter details with presumably card details later.  I put url in without arguments on my PC instead of phone and got exactly the same amount!

Similar thing happened to me a while ago. My son had bought something from the USA by mail order. The extra charge was the customs charge for the item coming from a non EU country.

How do we stand with parcels arriving from EU countries now? There has been some talk of tariffs on certain items which the suppliers aren’t paying.

Is this a possibility for what has happened to frankblack?

The domain mentioned by Frank in the opening post was created on 3 Feb 2021 and has a domain contact mailing address in Malaysia. Undoubtedly a scam.

It is as if you launch the page with no arguments you get the exact same payment demand with no personal details.  Any url would have to have some kind of reference to your parcel on it and the website would be running off royalmail.com anyway.

My experience is that RoyalMail put a card through the door with a reference on it you can use on royalmail.com.  I got done ordering a CD + download from the U.S.   Customs counted my download cost in the parcel value and wanted about £14 to release it.  I let it go back and bought the CD in Fopp for £10.

Merge with scam thread.

Royal Mail, HMRC and your bank will never, ever contact you by text or email.

Physical letters are still the order of the day and are far more secure than technological options.
In some rare cases your bank may call you to notify you of suspicious account activity but even that's getting rarer.

Royal mail might contact you via email about customs charges for parcels.

I had it last year and it was definitely legit and in relation to a specific order I had coming.

My bank(s) also contacts me via text from time to time. Any time I've phoned them to check they've confirmed it's legitimate.

Just as a caution to people ignoring 21st century means of communication out of hand...it may actually need your attention and not be a scam.

There are potentially VAT or Import duties to pay if you have ordered even moderately priced goods from EU countries.

The thresholds are explained in this article.

Not just the EU.

However, FF, this is a scam with a website faked up to look very close to the Royal Mail site.  With such as small sum demanded people automatically might think it can't be a scam, and let their guard down.  However, the goal of this scam is likely to capture your account details and draw as much money as they can get away with before you are aware.

I appreciate the nature of this particular scam, but as far as the EU is concerned there is a Brexit cost.  Tax/customs arrangements for goods coming from outside the EU have not changed.

With information on interest rate changes and account fees yes, certainly nothing to do with actual transactions

Been getting texts about HBSC trying to set up a new payee or some rubbish.

Just had the dreaded phone call from the automated female version of Stephen Hawking about the warrant out for my arrest for tax evasion unless I press 1.
