Totally subjective.

Some of my favourites aren't too mainstream.

Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins, Massive Attack)

Mark Lanegan

Robert Plant

Ann Wilson (Heart)

David Bowie

Jonsi (Sigur Ros)

Chris Cornell

John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

Eddie Vedder

Tarja Turanen (ex Nightwish)

Stevie Nicks

Paul Rogers (Free, Bad Company, Queen, ...)

Alison Goldfrapp

Janis Joplin

Ozzy Osbourne

Rob Halford

The obvious ones like Aretha,  Otis Redding,  Stevie Wonder,  Curtis Mayfield,  Marvin Gaye,  Gladys Knight,  Mick Jagger,  Rod Stewart.

Chaka Khan is one badly overlooked.  Leona Lewis should get more credit.  Going leftfield a bit I would add Bryan Ferry and Midge Ure.

Karen Carpenter for me.

Her voice had never even been close to being bettered.

My Dad was a crooner man.  He was never really into the default following of Sinatra, Martin etc...though.

His favourite was Eddie Fisher, and the more widely known Perry Como.

He couldn’t stick Tom Jones 😂

Always felt McCartney was underrated as a vocalist.

Golden Slumbers, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Maybe I'm Amazed... for example.

Karen Carpenter and Nat King Cole take the prizes though, for me.

Never understood the fuss about Sinatra. Good voice, yes, maybe even very good but nowhere near what it's made out to be.

Never quite got the whole Sinatra thing either; I actually thought Matt Monro was better.

Aye, he used to say that. As I pointed out above, he had others ahead of Sinatra, in his opinion of course 🙂

Otis Redding is a great shout as is Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole. Female singers, I’d say Etta James or Patsy Clyne but Stevie Nicks has a great voice.

Elvis

Nina Simone

Eddie Vedder

Keren Carpenter

There's got to be some opera singers in the list but I don't know many.

Depends what aspects are being gauged to determine 'best singer'.

Kelly Jones could be given an honourable mention for his adaptability.

I'm not a fan of these at all but what a set of pipes these ladies have (shit music but voices like silk):

Leona Lewis (Admit it, she can hold a tune and has a lovely voice)

Whitney

Annie Lennox (mentioned above)

Personally, if they sound the same live as they do on recordings (without all that voice assist technology pish) then I think they are talented.

Most of these have been mentioned already: Otis, Aretha, Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Liz Fraser, Al Green.

Male:

Elvis Presley

Freddie Mercury

Sam Cooke

David Bowie

Otis Redding

Ray Charles

Female:

Aretha

Eva Cassidy

Whitney Houston

Really just because I love artists with soul in their vocal, where I can lose myself in the emotions of the song....
