Scottish footballs biggest 'what ifs'?

Texia

Recommended Posts

Just been listening to an interview with Andy Webster and of course the topic of the 2005/06 season and George Burleys sacking came up, obviously whenever it's talked about the discussion is around if George had stayed on would we have went on to win the league, and it got me thinking, what are the other biggest/most discussed etc 'what ifs' in the wider view of Scottish football, thinking about the national team, the league or any other Hearts related?

What if we had got that penalty early on? 🤷🏼‍♂️

What if we had rattled 6 in against Hamilton a couple of weeks earlier.

That’s the essence of Whatiffery.  Anyway, wasn’t it Clydebank? 😎

Ftfy.

The answer?

Frank McGarvey/Tony Fitzpatrick's St. Mirren 0 Celtic 10, 11,12...whatever was necessary.

Hearts-Burley, sacking Levein earlier, going into lockdown sooner

What if we hadn't ****ed up the whole Setanta thing

What if we didn't bow to the OF during the SPL reconstruction

What if we had a separate broadcasting networks from BBC and Sky to stop the flood of EPL football being shoved in everyone's faces and ignoring and talking down domestic football

Clydebank is where we lost the league imo. What if we had put a few past Clydebank...then I think Celtic wouldn’t have even been up for it on the last day.

Yes, I was at the match, we should have scored many more!

You could feel the tension that day, massive weight lifted when Mackay hit that screamer.

It was a fantastic goal, that was my first visit to Tynecastle, it was magical and the way things ended the following week will never ruin my walk to the famous ground!

Bazzas right boot

Too many..

What if we'd beaten Aek and got to the group stages of the ucl or what if 2nd had given automatic entry in the first place.

Burley hadn't been sacked, champions and see above.

Alex Ferguson had joined us.

SKY gave us the same money ( relative) as they do to English football.

We'd held on another 5 minutes at 1-0 in the last sc final, we'd have won it imo.

Be Dave or jc had scored in Munich.

Sutton had scored the header at 1-0 in the lc.

Ah ****, I'm depressed now.

We had so many draws and losses that season though, but the roll we were on at that Clydebank game we should have pumped them.

It’s obviously been talked about for decades.  We all bemoan not putting more past Clydebank but in the end, it was about the 2 points, winning the game.

It kept it all in our hands going into the last match. That’s all we asked at the time.  No denying the stitch up at the Midden Shit Pit though.

So so so many.

What if Locke never got injured in 96

Cup final

What if gasgoine never came on in the league Cup final

What if Italy never got that free kick

What if we all stood up to rangers when they died in 2012

What if naysmith never got injured in the league Cup semi at murrayfield

What if mercer succeeded!!

What if Dundee United had defended a 2-0 lead against Roma is a pretty big 'what if' where football in general is concerned.

Салатные палочки

What if JC had that wee bit more composure when one on one in the Olympiastadion?

What if Jim Leighton wasn't bandy-legged?

Well that's an easy one. It would've been 10.

What if Bill Crombie had awarded the stone wall penalty we should have had early in THAT Dundee game.  He admitted privately that he did think it was a pen but it was too early to award it!!

The Old Tolbooth

What if Rangers hadn't cheated for all those years when we had a decent team, how many more trophies would we have won, and how much more European football would we have seen?

Or beaten Aberdeen the week before Clydebank, or if Kenny Black hadn’t missed a penalty at Dens earlier in the season, or if Sandy Clark hadn’t missed a sitter at ER in a 0-0 draw....... so many what ifs that season it still hurts to think about them

Jambo ref, ( still hard to believe that) never gave a stone waller.

Gazza started the match. 👍

On the signing front...

What if Celtic had signed Rudi as a left back instead of Mo Kamara?

What if Flogel had signed for Dundee United instead of us?

What if Adam had opted to go to Hibs instead of us?

Slightly wider cast approach:

What if Celtic and Rangers had never been founded.  Would there be another duo of teams from the West that would have become so dominant, or would things have shifted toward someone else?

What if Hearts had never agreed to play Hibs in the first match that would become the Edinburgh Derby?  I'm sure the league were against Hibs being allowed to join, so would we now instead be going to Derby matches against St Bernard's (or the Third Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers when they were originally founded in the same year as us), without a Hibernian FC ever existing or being more than an amateur team (insert your own joke here)?

A slight change in circumstances way back would have had huge changes to the landscape of Scottish football today.

What if people stood beside Vlad when he was calling the SFA out for what they are?

What if the media actually called out OF managers and owners for the hypocrisy and nonsense they spout at times?

What if Berra had been in position to clear the ball in the 2019 Cup final (where he would usually be the other 99 times out of 100) instead of it running through to Edouard?

What if the Pieman actually sold Tynie and we had moved?

Not just Scottish football, but what if no football player in any league, in any country, was allowed to make more than 10k per month (It's more than enough to live on).
