Heard tonight that Irving has been offered a 5 years deal making him one of the top earners at the club.

A spanner from the railways, hook line and sinker.

I'll go out on a limb and say this isn't true.

Hope we have offered him a contract but surely not as one of the top earners. The guy is a real talent but shouldn’t be one of the top earners just yet.

Certainly not many, but I, like many others can see it being a problem going forwards.

One thing for certain, at one time letting our best young talent run down there contracts would not have been an issue, seems to be the norm now... the only way you will get a return on your youth academy is having the best ones on long term contracts, if you can’t make a return on your young players, then there is no point in investing in it , to the sums Hearts contribute on a yearly basis.

if these young players don’t want to sign long term deals then we definitely have a problem, the likes of Hibs and Aberdeen had no problem in persuading Nisbet, McGennis and McKenna into signing 5 year deals.

In this day and age the club must back there judgement and have our best young talent on long term deals, we will never ever get a return on our best young talent if we don’t do this.

If  that’s not an option, then you have to question the long term viability of running the present youth academy

Difficult to know what a club like us is supposed to do these days.

Shorter contracts mean that when a young player starts coming good, their contract is already running down and we lose them for little or no money.

Longer contracts may result in a player’s development stalling, and then we are left with a liability we either have to move on or keep paying for the remainder of their contract.

We aren’t a big enough or rich enough club to put kids on decent money just to see whether they reach their potential or not.

Can't compete with Hickey on 8k a week. Good luck to him.

Absolutely no one is saying give him 8k a week FFS

But we have to match what Hibs and Aberdeen are paying there best young players

And if we are, and our young players still choose to run down there contracts , then we have bigger problems behind the scenes than any of us know.

I am happy to give guys like Irving an incentivised, target-driven contract where the rewards to him are potentially more than a wage increase on a new deal.

We have been bitten on the arse too many times with players getting lucrative long term deals and neither delivering nor willing to move on.

We can't, of course not. Problem is others  can and good young players will simply move on.

A 5 year deal which would increase his wage progressively seems conceivable to me. Wouldn’t think he’d start off as top earner it’d be, this year you get X, next year in the premiership you're up to X+ then after you hit 50 appearances you’re up to X++ and if you play out your skin and we get Europe, you’re up to X+++ but at that point you’d be likely good enough for a team to want to buy you and then you’re on to the bigger bucks.

Player and club - win win contracts. But the club needs to be protected from the risk of the player failing otherwise we end up with Damour situations.

The state of the club the last three or four years, I am no longer surprised by anything!

He's a quality player and I'd love it if he signed an extension.

I've seen enough of Irving to know that he's special enough to be one of our top earners. I have no idea what players like Halkett, Haring and Boyce are on but he should be earning as much as them at least.

Looked at the team, playing in midfield with Turnbull who looks to have been subbed. Probably on Celtics say so. Irving still on.

Hope he keeps his place for the next game against Greece.

Was only San Marino but pace of game suited him perfectly.

Home game against Croatia first, before finishing against Greece. The Croatia game is at Tynecastle on the 12th Nov.

How many young players have Hibs and Aberdeen taken of us?

Are Aberdeen and hibs young players better than ours, if so who?

Have hibs not shut their academy down?

The problem isn't Aberdeen or hibs it's clubs that can offer multiple the times we can without any risk.

The problem with the youth is the same with any contract.

Tie them down, their not so good - we get stuck with them.

Offer them shorter deals they can leave if they impress.
