Great clip, thanks. And what an attendance!
Does anyone else think the Hearts jerseys look a particularly light shade of maroon?

I believe Hearts wore blue that day

That’s interesting! But I wonder why given Aberdeen wore their white away kit? Seems strange, no?

I’m a fan of sky blue as Hearts’ away colour, mind you.

That 'welcome home' was superbly described in the programme 'The Team That Was' , the emotion shown and heard in the voice and expressions of Alex MacDonald was enough to produce a tear.

I saw that programme. Doddy’s emotional description of the scenes meets the billing of “tear jerker” right enough.

Those Pathe news footages are superb.

The quality is really good.

Pity there's no footage of the derby Cup tie a few weeks earlier.

Hearrs 5 Hibs 0.

That I would love to see.

Never a dump, behave yourself, for many years it was my and many others our theatre of dreams. Although I must admit that the new Tynecastle is superb and a vast improvement.

Yes I can still remember the smell of urine running down the terracing.

Mind you at least we didn't sell pies right outside the toilets like our City neighbours did.

I've never looked at Tynecastle as being a dump. It was an old ground when I started going but I'm glad I was brought up with it rather than the current stadium.

Great memories standing on the terraces

My Dad told me years ago Hearts change top was blue way back then.

Not sky blue and not quite a royal or dark blue.  🙃

bare in mind that was the Tynecastle Park that was more or less untouched or majorly redeveloped in over 60 years.

The only smells I can relate to Tynecastle back in the day was from the Distillery and the Hearts fans with their 'roll ups baccy'. The smell of urine was confined to the bogs 😄

Agreed, I get very nostalgic when reminiscing about the days on the terracing.

I'm hoping in the near future the club/museum/heritage can display some of the unseen images of the ground back in its original format or given the fact the club is approaching its 150th anniversary a book is in the process of being produced.

The distillery, cigarette smoke and Bovril was a heady mix. Especially at midweek games.

You’re right. It was a tremendous effort. It’s just that by going to the wire our failure was that much more excruciating. As you say, the hurt doesn’t go away.

Celtic won by virtue of the rules of the day. I’d argue that if you stood back and looked at the situation overall, Hearts weren’t inferior to Celtic that season. Equal on points, out of the four head-to-head league matches, we won one game and drew three. By how many goals did they “win” the title? Was it three or thereabouts? That makes them worthy champions over Hearts? Really?
Let’s be clear: we lost the title over the first 5-6 games. Our fault. That doesn’t mean we - and the rest of Scottish football - weren’t entitled to expect every St Mirren player to give an honest and committed performance in their final game v Celtic.
In a stark contrast, Blackburn Rovers lost their final game v Liverpool but still won the title because West Ham put in a shift (in what for them was a meaningless game) and held Man United to a draw. Only in Scotland.

Well put 👏🇶🇦🇶🇦

Interesting photo of the great Willie Hamilton.

It still annoys me that Jock Stein got the best out of him but then man-management was Stein’s forte.

Hamilton’s individual performance in the friendly v Real Madrid at Easter Road was by all accounts superlative.

And he scored against us in the 1965 New Year’s derby which we lost 0-1. That still hurts.

I was glad to see him return to Tynecastle, although unfortunately he didn’t reach the same heights.

Stein picked him for his only Scottish Cap. First time around with us he starred in a 6-0 win over Torpedo Moscow when they'd won most of their tour games comfortably (before my time).

I saw Willie second time around and there were a few great performances - solo goal from the halfway line v Partick, 3-2 win against Aberdeen where Fordy linked so well with him, but my fav was the cup tie at Dens in 1969 when he ran the game with the irony he tired and had been subbed when we scored the winner. Balding with a pot belly he had a knack for anticipating where the ball would be.

Yes, I remember him in his second spell with us too. Your description “balding and pot belly” is just so accurate!

In the ‘70s we saw players in England the likes of Bowles, Currie, Worthington, Hudson among others who were “rascals” in the Willie Hamilton mould but who, like Willie, were blessed with natural skills and ability which always made them a joy to watch.

I think you hit the nail on the head in saying the ground was undeveloped in 60+ years.
I recall the Shed with fondness but I remember the walls of the distillery streaming with liquid at times and the toilet facilities at the school end were positively “medieval”.

My formative years were spent inside the old Tynecastle so I grew to love it as the home of my team.
But was it a “dump”? Arguably but then with few exceptions I’d say most Scottish grounds were in poor condition back then. I did always feel however, that for a club with our standing in the Scottish game we should have played out of a bigger arena with better facilities.

Yes it was annoying. Not much we could do about  it though. The old firm regularly brought 20000 through until the mid 70's. No segregation or tickets, they just took the place over.
