City centre pubs

Going to Edinburgh on Thursday afternoon with the wife for my birthday..

Usually do Rose St, West end and then along to haymarket.

Anyone know if pubs along this route require bookings on Thursday afternoons?

On the one hand don't want a wasted trip, on the other don't really want to be time pressured in one place and have to move to make time booking for next one..

Depending on where you plan on going, you’ll probably need bookings for Saturday. Thursday will be fine tho.

I went for a quick pint before our meal last night just off Lothian Road, Footlights. Bar was empty.

Loads of tourists in city centre just now so you might find that some places are full so book if there is a particular pub you want to visit

Think its last guise was Countess of Broughton Street or something

Again? Aye it was the Empress of Broughton for a couple of years. Never stepped foot in it mind. Mathers was a cracking place.

When I worked just off Broughton Street (2012-2018) Mathers was the pub of choice for post-work pints, followed by The Phoenix when Mathers closed. Sadly even The Phoenix is away now, although it became a bit wanky and pretentious in it's final years anyway.

Cask and Barrel is still alright, never been to The Barony. Once a great wee street for pubs, now for pretentious twats. Sad stuff.

I do like the new incarnation of The Pheonix ... the Broughton especially if you get a window seat

Treacle has not reopened but The Basement has.

Being honest, I'm not really down that way anymore. It was just when I worked down that way. There was usually a group of us (guys) off somewhere on a Friday night with the intention of watching football and getting pished, which Mathers and The Phoenix catered for perfectly.

Then The Phoenix got taken over and started charging a fiver a pint.

Fingers crossed but I think its in a bad way just now. The old regulars have not taken kindly to all the new rules so place is very quiet.

What happened to the Haymarket bar?  Passed it yesterday on the bus, and it looks closed and I thought the name was missing.

The name is gone.

Does that mean the already over-priced beer will cost even more ? Ryries have had ideas above their station (ha) for a while now. Looks like I'll have to make somewhere else my first stop after getting off the train on matchdays.

Oh right, sounds Ok then. Usually gagging for a pint by the time I get off the train, so carry on as normal.

I used to pop in for a slash before getting the train home after the match. I didn't buy a drink. Just went in purely to use their tiny,  gantin bogs.

Ideas above it's station.

Sounds like it might actually be improving, and cheaper beer according to @thegeneral . Will reserve judgement till my next visit. I like a pint when I get off the train, Ryrie's was always handy for that.

Malinga the Swinga

Thistle Street Bar in Thistle street, funnily enough, is operating really good system in current circumstances. Well spaced out, details taken and excellent service. Also know they have had Covid inspectors in and met every guideline.

I was told the Froth & Flame in Morrison St was charging 10% for table service that is mandatory under Covid rules.

That seems a strange one.

Mind you nothing surprises me these days.

Aye Froth & Flame is the old Foxy Fiddler.

I'm going to be in Glasgow city centre on Friday afternoon. Anyone based through that way able to tell me if I'll be able to walk into places without booking or if I'd be better off booking certain places?

👍 Cheers. That place has changed so often in the last 10 years or so.
