Garden Bird identification

It’s not all telly people. Claire Balding is a genuinely nice person, and disappointingly Rob Brydon is a nice guy, I was convinced he’d be a shitbag.

The Matt lad that does Countryfile and The One Show is a topper of a bloke, as is the Queen drummer.

Maybe it’s just someone is on a particular day. I know A few people who had dealings with Queen back in the day and the common view is that he’s a prick.

Staying on Bill Oddie, you said the Goodies was Ace.

I was around 10-12 years old and loved it.

If you were to watch it now, you would be calling it a lot of shite.

Great to hear dirt getting flung on the wee *****. He always gets dragged on nature programs as the wee funny well informed lovely guy.

Good to know different.

Bill Oddie has suffered from some "mental health" problem for decades - its why he disappeared from Springwatch several years ago off.  So all the chat about him being an obnoxious tosser may be a result of that.

I've seen the red winged blackbirds in Arizona ... huge flocks .... but their beaks suggest that they're actually crows !!   The OP mystery bird is a young blackbird chick.   The poster who said the red kites had been exterminated as vermin is correct.  I think it was in the 1800's when many cities were open sewers.   Apparently their "normal" food is roadkill (rabbits & squirrels) - but when they're scarce, kites are bold enough to attack live animals or grab  human food.

Must say big thanks to all for confirming it being a Juvenile female Blackbird.

As i said, a pair of blackies frequent the garden, the mother being a fair bit smailler (certainly thinner) than the mother.

I had a visitor yesterday that I have never seen before in my puff (I'm 57). This is not a piss-take like the current Tit thread.

It was blackbird in size but a bit fatter. Had a brown chest with black speckles.

I managed to take a couple of poor photos.

I looked up Google and found Dunnock and wren, but not convinced of either.

I think that’s a fledgling blackbird.

I was going to tag you in as I knew your into birds 😉

Still can't get over how bigger it is compared to the mother.

Mother was in the garden today.

Yeah, fledglings are generally quite fat and puffed up. It was it’s wings that sealed it for me. 👍

Chances are it’s fine, mate. It looked pretty close to fledging and they are really mobile on the ground compared to a lot of other garden birds. That sound you hear when you walk past a hedgerow and think it’s a rat or a mouse is usually a blackbird going about it’s business on the deck. 👍

Used to have to deal with celebrities coming to do the christmas lights in the London Borough I worked in. Nicest of the lot was Toyah Willcox - took the time to go behind the scenes and thank all the kitchen staff etc. Hung around chatting to the ordinary folk working in the background.

Anyway, on the subject of birds the most interesting species in my garden this year has been a tree creeper

We have loads of these circling all day long. I like them, but they're pretty huge up close. I've never seen it happen but they're known to nick food from barbecues whilst it's cooking 🤣

My mate used to point them out, circling at high altitude around Marlow/Maidenhead.  Surprising given Heathrow was nearby!

We're not on much of a flight path, we only get very light traffic mostly North West (I think) of town. There are probably more planes in the sky from white Waltham airfield here than Heathrow.

Aye, fair enough.  I'd forgotten all about White Waltham!

Clocked a red squirrel in my garden the other day.....seen it 3 times now, hope it hangs about.  I’ve put out a couple of nut feeders along it’s run.

Got a 2nd visit from juvenile blackbird yesterday. Good.

Seen three wee fledglings on a gorse bush when walking the dog.

Ident required again.

Seemed very young.

One got spooked by my dog and jumped across to the other side of the path. I picked it up and put it back on the gorse.

Should have videoed to get better feel for the size, they were very small.

Looks kinda wren-shaped to me but I'll bow to the greatly superior ornithological knowledge of many others when it's proven to be something completely different.

They are very young. See the yellow parts of the beak that extend on to the sides of its face? They are a signal for the parent birds to feed it. Definitely looks like a wren shape, but at that age it’s really hard to tell.

Give me a moment to check some things.

Out of the more common species, we can rule out a dunnock and a sparrow.

Different shape beak for sparrow, and different colour beak for Dunnock:

Looks like a match to me? 🤷‍♂️

Birds are my weaker animal subject though. 👍

Robbin is a bit similar too, but wren definitely looks closer, I think. Anyone else?

I did say wren initially as it looked kinda like a mini-adult but **** me - they all look near enough the same when they're young!!

I’ve not checked the ‘sexier’ species yet, just the LBJs, but from those, I agree about a wren. The other close one is the ribbon, but even though you can only make out the tail slightly on @Tommy Browns photos, it looks stubby and upright like a baby wren and not as long and down-pointing as a robbin.

Do you remember what the tail looked like @Tommy Brown?

From memory, I would say that's what they were. Amazing find.

Don't know how I seen the first one.

Taking the photo and then noticed the second a couple feet to the right.

Then the third tried to leap away, I hadn't noticed that one.

Great wee things to see.
