Meatballs

Harry Potter

Harry Potter

Had the misfortune of buying these the other week, thought it was

normal meatballs, not chicken, ok should of double checked the label.

Anyway tried them 2 days ago, horrible, in a sauce which was more like a soup.

I thought all products went through testing by consumers, this must have been

tested by someone with no tastebuds.

Nothing beats my mums homemade meatballs. She makes them with a mixture of sausage meat and beef.

For cheap shite meatballs I'll always go for IKEA ones with the gravy. Braw

make you're own, had this last night with tagliatelle

Mince lamb, 500g

clove of garlic

1 shallot

herbs

1 egg

seasoning

mix and form into balls, fry them in the pan, just to brown them

add a tin of tomatoes, seasoning, herbs, clove of garlic, simmer for 20 mins, then add basil at the end, serve with pasta, delicious

The Fray Bentos meatballs have all been chicken-based ever since they bought the brand from Campbell's.

Best eaten with a spoon and buttered plain bread to go with.

Of course, making your own is the best way to go.

Any meat will do, minced and flavoured with onion, garlic, herbs (all optional) and bound together with breadcrumbs and egg.

Lamb can be served in pitta bread with salad, sour cream and mint.

Pork or beef can be served with pasta and a rich tomato sauce.

Make them bigger and wrap them in caul fat to make fagots, served with mash and gravy.

A huge variety of foods can be formed out of minced meat.

Koftas, meatballs, burgers, fagots, meatloaf, fried, baked, steamed, braised.

It's all pretty much the same thing.

Buying meatballs is just rank. It's easy to make a cracking meatball and you know what's in it then.

I've visited Las Iguanas on a few occasions and have to say their meatballs are tremendous.

I think I'll try to make Beef and black pudding meatballs. No idea if it'll work, or not.

Horse meats fine mate. Ground down hooves and farmers fingernails aren't.

for a store bought, quick dinner I agree those are really good!

Usually have them in a tomato and chilli or herb sauce, served over a spinach, feta and cous cous salad

I think everyone has had horse meat (unintentionally).

Hooves and Fingernails? Sounds like a bar for the eclectic crew. 😄

Naw, no a bar. Just standard processed food.

That was the funniest thing about the horsemeat scandal. Folk getting upset that they were actually eating meat but happily eating all the crap that they knew was in it.

That looks fantastic. Of course,  veggies could replace the meatballs with a tin o beans, which I'm sure they too would enjoy.

Surely a meatball without the meat is just a ball?

Bought a couple of Fray Bentos steak pies during the stock piling panic in the initial Coronavirus phase. Hadn't realised they are now made by Baxters of Fochabers, the original Fray Bentos plant in Fray Bentos Uruguay having closed a few decades back. I remember then as an unexciting but fairly tasty stand by. The Baxters verion  were awful with an astonishingly low meat content.  Even worse were Fray Bentos Steak Suet Pudding Pots (a Baxter innovation?) which were simply inedible.

Should do, the black pudding will add to the texture if you get the ratio right. One of the best sausage rolls I ever had was pork and black pudding.

Veggie alternative is falafels.

Doesn't even have to be chickpeas to be honest.

Just about any bean or pulse can be ground up and used in the same way as meatballs/burgers etc.

Sometimes you just can't beat a home made spicy beanburger.

I stand corrected.

Tesco do a fantastic line in balls.

Big balls are the best.

Little ones are ok but leave you unsatisfied - unless of course, you just jet stuck in to an extra couple of balls.

Contrary to what you might expect, frozen balls are better than chilled. Better texture when ypu finally get them hot.

Sometimes just getting your hands dirty and kneading up a set of your own balls is best, though.

Pretty much how I make my own. Lots of garlic, a few chillis for a bit heat, some herbs and chuck blend it all together and chuck the mix in a bowl. Very therapeutic forming the mix into meatballs.

Make mine using minced beef, garlic, sausage meat, and parsley.

Once they are shaped, I put a small piece of mozzarella into the middle of each 1. Like myself, absolutely stunning.

Carl Fredrickson

My kids are fussy eaters and dont like trying new things. Bought meatballs (normal sized beef ones) at Tesco for them.

They said they didnt like meatballs as they tried some at their mums. I suspect they would have been tinned ones and not the Campbells ones from my youth (Campbells meatballs, the meat you love to eat!).

They loved the Tesco ones and I must admit they did taste better than I expected.
