We were there last November and absolutely loved it. Brisbane, Noosa, Melbourne and Sydney and a few smaller towns in Queenland like Eumundi and Gympie. Everywhere we went we found the locals to be great with us. All welcoming and friendly. If course that was only for a few weeks.

Once this shit is done we are going back down under.

If I had my time again I would love to live in Brisbane. I absolutely loved the place. Anyone else see the appeal of Brisbane ?

A few years back I met a Scottish couple who had settled in Brisbane and they loved it.  She described the weather as being 9 months of the year perfect, 3 months living in a steam bath.

Yeah. I would like to go there too. Get Kuwidoug to buy me a beer.....

My daughter loved Canada. Banff, Lake Louise and Calgary.

I fancy the train through the Rockies to Vancouver.

👍

Don't know about Kiwidoug buying you a beer, tho. Squeaks when he walks, apparently. :troll:

It was perfect in November. We were staying in hotel by the river near the Story Bridge. River ferries 5 mins away. Easy to get around the City. Great bars and restaurants. It was Melbourne Cup day when we arrived and everything stops for it around Australis. The sights at night ? A little better than Ladies Day at Musselburgh....

Hard to believe!!!!!!!!!

Been in Australia for over 7 years now, got my citizenship last year and I have never looked back or regretted the move. There are things I miss in Scotland , family / friends , hearts are some them.

There is a post about Australians being loud, which is funny , as when out I can assure you if there are Scottish ( or English around ), those are the loudest voices you will here. I cringe whenever I hear that weegie accent

I found out at the age of 40 that I am 1/2 Australian.

Went over to visit a few years ago to where my Mum lives in Canberra,  I found it be very old fashioned. The whole place was like a time warp back to the 70/80s in attitudes. Then went to Sydney for a few days before coming home and it was brilliant. Sydney seems so different from Canberra. It felt multicultural, vibrant and generally more friendly. I was only there for a short time and maybe after spending several weeks in Canberra my judgement on Sydney might not be accurate if you scratch the surface, but I would love to revisit and spend more time there.

As for NZ, I have never been, but I love their PM. Based on political balances I would happily live in NZ or Canada

Never been to Canberra,  but the locals here describe it as being like a really big country town.  Pretty much fits your experience I reckon.

I love Sydbey, is an amazing place to live,  but it's so cosmopolitan that it doesn't  really feel like the Australia you'd see on the TV. It's definitely a world city.

Canberra is just totally weird. Basically an office pretending it’s a city and the CBD pretty much closes down after office hours apart from a handful of pubs. And then at the weekend everyone goes mental, hell of lot of testosterone about the place as the drinking crowd includes farmers, military, and people from the Australian sports excellence centre. Lots of seriously big lads getting pissed up and competing for the relatively small amount of women. Blazingly hot as well as it’s too far inland to get any cooling breezes.

I spent 6 months there working & travelling the length and breadth of both islands, from Cape Reinga to Invercargil via about 50 stops. The scenery is without a doubt the best in the world that I have seen (never been to Canada).

I was genuinely taken aback by the number of bikers there, lots with guns clipped to their bikes and saw more than one bar brawl. It wasn't confined to the more rural outposts although I only saw craft beer in Wellington. A lot of the guys I spoke to were what you would call 'rugby lads' only their attitudes towards women were even worse the their British counterparts.

To counter this, I met some great guys in New Zealand but they all seemed to be from one of the cities and barely knew what rugby was. Hence why I say it was  a mixed bag. I think people expect NZ to be this idyllic quiet place, but it isnt. Not really.

The bakeries are also ****ing abysmal and ran by the chinese locals, who couldn't bake a pie if their lives depended on it. I found that more offensive than the cavemen.

Your perspective is warped and inaccurate, bizarre.

Biker gangs in NZ are relatively insignificant in comparison to the Maori gangs, the Mongrel Mob and Black Power. To state that they openly have guns clipped to their bikes is complete fantasy.

The ‘rugby lads’ you refer to a commonly called rugby heads and are no worse than there international counterparts and certainly not any worse than the majority of people you would meet at a football match over here.

Men in cities don’t know what rugby is? Strange comment.

Can only get craft beer in Wellington 😳

Your entire post is rubbish but to then go as far as criticising the bakery’s and pies? Makes me think you’ve never been there.

I took advantage of their Assisted Passage scheme with the intention of staying the mandatory two years before returning

That was 40 odd years ago.

i live in Sydney and wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else.

while Sydney is brash and ‘in your face’ Melbourne’ is a world class city too although a bit more sedate.

Weather definitely better in Sydney...it’s winter now and I still go out in shorts and T shirt.

Brisbane is ok, and much smaller than the other two cities mentioned, but far too hilly for me.

Perth is the most isolated place in the world, and while I have mates there, it didn’t take them long to inherit the obligatory chip on their shoulder in regard to the ‘eastern states’

Perth could almost be described as Edinburgh with sunshine as Scottish accents abound.

Racism is no worse or better than I encountered in Edinburgh,

.
Lived   New Zealand 30 years ago and it seemed about 10 years behind Oz.

Auckland was the pits, but obviously may have changed., and I’m told Wellington is a nice place but too much danger of earthquakes for me

Love the weather here, the standard of living, and the beer.

I've been in all the major cities in Australia and I can't explain why but Adelaide was my favourite, probably because it's not as big and brash as the rest and reminded of Edinburgh in a way. 👍

Wife preferred Sydney.

Calm down hen, I get it, you wont hear a bad word against the place. I gave a fairly balanced view.  There are biker gangs all over the shop and the women were an eyesore compared to the Aussie ones. Most of the guys outside the cities were mentally ill and sexually repressed. I can only assume by the tone of your reply, that you are one.

I praised the scenery and most of the folk who aren't feral. The bakeries are brutal tho, you must be mental if you think a sloppy joe pie made by the Chinese is in any way acceptable. Most of them also resembled canteens.

But aye, I never went, it was all a dream.

Have a nice day x

Also, if you're going to reply, at least quote me correctly. Its not difficult,. its written down for you so you can ask your wife to explain mid beating. Lines 4 and 5 in your retort are made up.

By  saying that I "only saw craft beer in wellington", I meant, I got absolutely shit faced for two weeks, ergo, I only saw craft beer. Apologies if that was too nuanced for you.

Jeez, that assisted passage thing takes me back a bit.

A mate and I looked into using it but being as cowardly as they come, thought "feck that" when we found out about the percentage chances of being called up, along with the possibilities of facing "Charlie" in Vietnam.

No bone spurs affliction for us, pure common sense. (for once)

Apparently they had a series of ballots and whatever number came out, if  your 19th birthday fell on that day, you were called up,

I missed that thankfully, although I do know a few guys who said that they returned to Scotland for a while  to avoid going to 'Nam.

Some tired stereotypes being trotted out here I see. Lived in Australia for 6 years and there is probably a worse ratio of arsehole to non arsehole in Scotland if I'm being honest.

People are definitely way happier and more positive in Australia. Even if you earn minimum wage here, you can have a decent house, a car, a garden and have BBQs in the sun for 6 months a year and afford the odd trip to Bali. No wonder they're happier and more positive. Minimum wage in Scotland looks horrific.

Australian "bogans" are way friendlier and better people than Scottish neds.

What i would agree with is that the Australians in the 18-25 age group, particularly the males that travel to the UK and elsewhere tend to be annoying and behave like pricks. I guess it's just the holiday, care free attitude. They really don't represent the country accurately but they are incredibly loud and obnoxious.

I definitely hear more casual racist comments over here.
