Berry regularly had "Scotland's best midfielder" Paul McStay in his back pocket. A better player than a lot give him credit for. He didn't score many, but possibly his last goal was in the SC at Killie. I think he scored against Celtic too in a midweek game against Celtic. I missed the game as I was off school ill. A diving header in a 1 0 win in front of nearly 30k

As for Iain Jardine, I still remember his goal on 1st of January 86, when he hit that one between the sticks 😁

Dave McCreery was a great wee player for us, even if he wore dodgy cycling shorts when he played.

Memories.

song for that game went something like

1st of January 86

Iain put the first between the sticks

Sandy Clark and Robbo too

We are the Gorgie Jam Tarts

Great.....

He was keen on a tackle.

Some of the time he was lucky he was that late!

Ibrahim Tall was great at winning the ball in the middle. Great hatchet man.

The combo of Buaben and Gomis hadn't been replaced. Two great players IMO

Berry was a very limited footballer. Tried his best but his distribution and football intelligence was below par. Brellier for me was a far better all round player by a country mile

Very good together but not as good when one was missing for some reason

In my opinion the best ball winning midfielder we have had, in my generation at least, is Neil Berry. Brellier probably a close second but Neil was second to none in winning 50/50s and he always gave his all for the maroon shirt, a true Jambo.

If only we had some more players of his ilk we would be right up there in the higher reaches of the league. I hope everyone agrees.

Berry had big limited but was still superb

Peter Haring..but for his injury he would be very high up in the pecking order

Oh and I wonder how he is doing just now in terms of a full return ?....the last news was in January and he was resting for a few weeks well we are almost 5 months on from that

Ditto. Some players have a particular trait and Neil Berry is always seen as a ball winner and it’s taken as him being the strongest at it.

Cameron for me can be put in that bracket but you then go onto talk about a far more complete player.

Berry was a player I admired too. Always in the team and you expected him to always be there. He was a reliable player but did a specific job very strongly and that’s why he was picked.

Cameron rolled everything into one but will more likely(and has been) be remembered more for goals, effort, passing and creativity. It clouds the fact he was a bloody pest too! Nicking balls off feet, hassling you into a mistake and not jumping out a 50/50. He could tackle alright.

well Said I was just a teen when I watched Colin Cameron but I wish I could watch him his an an adult to properly appreciate him.

I just remember he was a box to no nonsense ball winning machine. 7 out of 10 or more each game.

Loved when Mickey won the ball and always felt he would make something of it.

Hartley did that too.

For out and out tackling and breaking it up Le judge for me.

Pro .

Peter Haring looks like a good shout if we can keep him fit

He was a massive miss when he got injured. Left us with a very soft middle.

The best DMs are ones who can play a bit too, as it is the link-up position between defence and midfield.

Old age has its benefits:

Dave MacKay

John Cummings

Drew Busby

Dave Mackay would certainly be the right answer. Never shirked a tackle in his puff. His reputation alone meant most players would pull out going in against him.

The White Cockade

Bobby Masterton 😂

Adao was excellent at getting the back back

Somebody mentioned Iain Jardine who I Liked a lot but he was a ball player not a ball winner Think he was injured every time he made a tackle!

When it came to tackling Drew Busby was your man

I really liked Adao as well, absolutely zero ground given to Broony, that's exactly the mentality we need in there.

Has to be Nerijus Barasa for me

No chance the opponent was coming away with the ball

Hearts' Nerijus Barasa fouls Dean Shiels of Hibernian resulting in ...

Hearts' Nerijus Barasa is bocked by Rangers' Charlie Adam during ...

Mind you... neither was he!

Jingle Bells

Seem to  remember that Neil Berry was signed as a Centre Half and was then converted to a centre midfielder by Alec MacDonald.

Did the midfield ball winning bit well and was no slouch, imho.

From my era, it depends on the job you wanted the player to do. If you wanted physicality and domination of a player then McLaren, Berry and Gregor Stevens we’re players you wanted. Berry’s tackle on Paul Wright is legendary.

If you wanted a ball winner to play the ball after he won it, Flogel, Tomashek, Brellier and the late great Salvatori were the guys you wanted.

I'm not sure that he was a centre half, but one of the classiest things about our 1986 team was that we had two stylish central defenders (Jardine and Levein) , neither of whom was a classic centre half, and they wore numbers 4 and 6. That was partly because we started the season with Roddy MacDonald as the proper centre half and Levein in midfield, his usual position up to then. Around October, MacDonald was injured, Levein went back to play beside Jardine, and instantly we became unbeatable (until May, sadly). I don't know whether the plan had always been to move Levein to defence or whether it was just one of these happy experiments that went completely right.

Among other things, it meant we had central defenders who could stroke the ball around, and Henry always played the ball short, sometimes frustrating our 'get it up the park' fans.

That meant the number 5 shirt, which would always have been for a central defender, was taken by a midfielder, Berry, who had a great season.

Jamie Walker, at his best, can nick the ball off an opponent in a tight situation, without giving away a foul. He's great at that.

I always remember NB as someone who was useless at heading a ball.

Salvatori back in in the late 80s.

Pallardo in our championship season.

Le Juge just went about his business stopping the opposition from playing

Signing John Colquhoun helped with the run too, Mars.

If only we had picked up some more points at the begining of the season..

I don't think Neil was a midfielder by trade but did a very effective job in there.

MacDonald/Jardine were quite clever at spotting player potential in different positions to their norm.

Jardine looked finished as a full-back but proved to be brilliant as a Sweeper, for instance.

Great goal, one of his best.

His double at Ibrox was top quality as well, shame the game wasn't on the TV.

Liked it when JC played through the middle, on occasions
