Why is that a worry or concern? It's really not that big a deal to slip a mask on while you're in a shop. If it helps prevent a 2nd wave then I'm happy to wear one until a vaccine is found.

Because:

1.  I like many others find them uncomfortable and irritating.  I don’t shop too much so no big deal but others will either not go or limit their shopping habits which has yet more economic impact.

2. For me personally the big one is it unsettles my children who are young and don’t like seeing Daddy wearing a mask.  We are trying to shield them from the whole coronavirus thing and that makes it hard

3.  It’s also inconvenient, it means I have to remember to have a mask with me at all times and if I forget I can’t pop into a shop.  That sounds simple but real life isn’t like that and inevitably will prove to be a pain in the ass.

none of the above are game changers and as I said I’m happy to do my bit over the next couple of months but I simply do not support this being mandated over the longer term.  A vaccine and roll out could be well over a year down the line, for me that’s too long.

So better to just increase the risk of it spreading than have people very mildly inconvenienced?

You only need to wear the mask when you're in the shop.

Before and after, you can take it off.

Keep it with your shopping bags so you don't forget it.

It's not difficult, people are just being arseholes about it.

Wear one, don’t wear one it’s all ok it’s the little hitlers who will make a song and dance about it if you don’t that will bother me.

My view that I am trying to ensure my children are shielded from being scared of this situation is not a ‘very mild’ inconvenience to me and my wife.   Don’t patronise me about how I choose to raise my kids.

There are loads of situations where you are just out and about and not necessarily planning to visits a shop but discover you need to or want to.

so yes it not a huge issue but your ‘solution’ isn’t really a solution at all.

now people will need to remember to take a mask with them in the same way they do a wallet or a phone.  Again not a big issue but a very real change to everyday life that some people will inevitably forget as habits are hard to change and then it will be a pain.

i haven’t seen many people say they don’t support the change but are entitled to be a bit irritable about it especially given we have gone this long without it being mandated.

I have heard people are objecting because they say you will be inhaling carbon dioxide or not enough oxygen. All mostly untrue. Carbon dioxide molecules are tiny and will pass easily through breathable masks. It’s not a poly bag you are wearing.
Obviously don’t put them on toddlers as their lungs haven’t developed yet. Same if you already have breathing issues.

I see Pete Wishart snp saying Scotland should withdraw from British Institutions including Westminster if independence still blocked by Tories - now Nicky says there should be no party politics at this time - did he not get the memo or has she lost control of her

I don’t think she has lost control of the party but now that the COVID situation is passing inevitably some will want to return to the question of independence.  I think Boris now will

use COVID and the imminent recession as further reasons to deny a second vote.

i don’t think Nicola will be that bothered by that privately as she will see now probably isn’t the time for another constitutional debate but some in the SNP are getting increasingly impatient and that could create divide.

if I was Kier Starmer I would let slip now that if elected at next GE I would Support indyref2.  I think most people would think that that breathing space was welcome given COVID and yet would give a clear commitment for a few years away.

As far as England goes Stammer might lose some of the gain Labour have made since Corbyn departure and his appointment - don't think he would risk that - but you are right there will just be a lot of token bluster from the nats and The Revenge of the Ecktopus has still to play out up here.

But the death rate is now virtually zero, it’s back to normal levels, all without face masks being mandated.

I agree we should wear them for another couple of months to be sure we see it off once and for all then let’s let people get back to normal if they choose to.

After 14 weeks of closure, I think people would have piled in whatever day of the week.

If it was a Monday, everyone would be in the Monday club then be fecked for their work on the Tuesday as well.

Boozers won't look the same as before. Table service and 2 hour limits.

That’s the theory anyway. You just move to the next boozer. This is insanity mate I have no clue who thought this was a good idea in the middle of summer. Why can’t you admit that  It’s not going to be anything like the same on a Monday as it’s going to be tomorrow! Most people I know are back at work in some form or other.
Saturday? And I include myself in the frenzy to get back out socialising again, will be a different ball game. Not even the same sport. I hope it’s not going to be the chaos I’m imagining tbh.

Life will take a long time to get back to normal if it ever does.

Is there a time limit as I was chatting with my mate and we weren’t sure?

also, does anyone know if when beer gardens open on Monday the toilets of the pub are accessible?  I’m asking for a ‘friend’ with the bladder of a weak mouse.

Yeah it’s Boris’s whole leadership approach in microcosm.

You can imagine his enthusiasm, ‘4th July, Independence Day, a Saturday, what a headline, people will be thrilled, let’s get the country going etc’. The backslapping and big smiles all round the cabinet table.

then reality kicks in and suddenly oh sh@t, didn’t think of the actual practicalities of this.

I suspect Sunday’s headlines will not be ones he had in mind.

It's a bit misleading. Intentionally so by the Westminster Government. 252,084 is the number of tests the Government say they have done. But that includes tests posted out but not completed, antibody tests and research tests (eg foe the ONS survey or where they are testing how accurate a new type of test is).

Westminster no longer report the number of people tested. The best proxy is pillar 1 people tested (through the NHS) and tests processed in pillar 2 (the mobile testing units).

Those are 27,337 and 50,481 respectively. So the best estimate of people tested yesterday is 77,818 (ie Westminster still isn't meeting it's 100k people tested a day by the end of May target).

Of those 576 people tested positive. That means roughly 0.7% of people testing positive, which is still a pretty good figure. The equivalent for Scotland only yesterday was 0.1% testing positive.

Thanks for that informative answer. Incredibly low

I would imagine they'll have bathroom attendants letting in a few at a time. I also heard they will have hand sanitisers outside the toilet door. No point in washing your hands then touching the door on the way out
