Had a soft spot for Dortmund since they beat Liverpool at Hampden in 1966. Managed over 4 times in recent years, as a  reason to visit to cousins in Düsseldorf.

A fantastic stadium and a great experience. I wouldn’t say a Celtic love in, rather that they’ve been the victim of propaganda from Celtic fans and ex players over the years.
First time we went, around 2010, we had to put a couple of guys straight about how evil an institution Celtic are. Last time we went, Murdo McLeod was on the pitch as part of a celebration of a cup winning team.

They also sing “You’ll never walk alone” before each match, but it’s something we used to sing as well, back in the day.     They have high regard for Paul Lambert, which is understandable given he won the Champions League with them.

Most bizarre thing I’ve seen there was during the last visit, last season. Some English guy started belting out “Jaydon Sancho, he’s one of our own”, expecting the locals to join in. Fortunately, he was on his own, and it didn’t happen.

Hearts (Hertha) Berlin.

Or Nuremberg for the history aspect. Or Wolfsburg, as I used to have a VW.

Can't decide.

I'll make it easier for you. Wolfsburg play in green....

No team's wear maroon unfortunately. Petty I know.

I'd happily follow them but l can't stand the Celtic connections. The atmosphere before, during and after is superb. It's the way football should be with beer stalls and sausage stalls outside the ground and free public transport on match day with a ticket etc. Totally understand their love for Paul Lambert though. I agree about them being subjected to the Celtic propaganda - l have Croatian friends that have also been subjected to that. I try my best to correct them but they've been far too 'corrupted' lol.

Wolfsburg's is a nice green though. Kaiserslautern play(ed) in a deep red/maroon-ish shirt, don't they, iirc?

They do. And some of Nürnberg’s kits have come pretty close to maroon. Bayern had an absolutely belting maroon third strip quite a few years back. Proper maroon.

At no point in my life have i ever connected Borussioa Dortmund with celtic. Absolute pish, and almost as bad as their ridiculous St Pauli link due to their socialist credentials.

No idea who i would want to win but i just hope everyone has a good time :)

I've always found it utterly bizarre that folk feel the need to have a German team, a French team, a Spanish team.

Whos your Uzbeki team bud?

Just watch the games

If you're petty, like me, and need to pick a team based on the colours they wear, here's an extract from the kits on FIFA 20 this season:

Love German football, but I have a real problem feeling any attachment to any team anywhere other than Hearts. If I had to take an interest in one it would probably be FSV Frankfurt, who’re now fourth tier (Regionalliga) after a few years earlier this century when they were doing not too badly in Bundesliga 2.

I’m still not sure that the Celtic connections are so strong. They’ve got their tentacles elsewhere in German football, which I informed those guys I mentioned before of.
They’ve got some tie up with St Pauli fans. Some nonsense about them being fellow rebels against the establishment. It’s one of the reasons the Hamburg fans did the big “no surrender” display before a match against Celtic.

Celtic fans are a pathetic, attention seeking shower of poison.

I agree that the attachment is nothing like the same. It’s just having another interest.

I can’t understand people who get upset when their English team lose. It’s nothing like the same emotional connection, or certainly shouldn’t be.

I have to say that when I was growing up in Edinburgh in the 1960s and 1970s, nobody I knew had an English team and to do so would have been regarded as bizarre. I’m perfectly willing to accept that other people might have experienced things differently. Everyone supported either Hearts or Hibs apart from the very occasional OF or Motherwell weirdo I knew.

For me it’s a generation thing, as a football living kid I picked a team from each country to follow their results when the pink paper came out on a Saturday night!

For Germany a Dortmund wallet purchased on a school trip is reason enough. That said I do wish union berlin all the best due to their story/fans

I had teams in various countries as a kid, but as an adult I realised how daft it was

I'm not talking about those with a genuine affiliation with another team in another country but there are folk out there who genuinely have teams in just about every other country. It's weird.

Yeah l agree, Celtic seem to have their claws in quite a few foreign clubs. Sickening but as you say it's like some pathetic need to be loved. Not too dissimilar to them thinking they're the 'greatest fans in the world' as some kind of comfort blanket.

Anyway this about German football. I've been to a Duisburg game against Hansa Rostock in a relegation battle. Atmosphere was intense. We were on a train going to the game and the only Duisburg fan on the train sat beside us and then a carriage full of Rostock fans got on with nazi salutes and jack boots. Had one guy screaming at me in German l've no idea what he said. When we got off the train the station was lined with police with m16s and German shepherd dogs barking at anything that moved. I've never been quite so scared in whole my life but was a brilliant experience. Love German football for the passion alone. Was also at the Stuttgart game with Hearts. My only away day in Europe with a Hearts, best away trip ever.

Just checked you are indeed correct.

Looks like the current colour is red but lots of wiki pics show maroon. A lovely shade of maroon too! 👍

Werner Herzog

BVB have been my second team for over a decade now & I've been to 8 games at the Westfalenstadion during that time, so a no brainer for me. Other than that, I have soft spots for Koln, Freiburg & Bremen (although they looked doomed long before lockdown). Naturally I have a strong disdain for Schalke, Bayern & Red Bull (otherwise known as Leipzig). Not crazy on the other plastic clubs either (Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim).

Regarding the Celtic connection, it is a tad uncomfortable I'll admit. There is a warmth between both clubs unfortunately because of BVB's UEFA cup win at hampden in the 60s & the fact they had a big party together in the streets of Dortmund during the late 80s when they drew each other in Europe. And then there's that clucking song...(my lips have also remained sealed every time it comes on the speakers prior to a match starting :P)

I walked into the St Pauli shop when in Hamburg a few years ago. First thing I saw on display was a St Pauli/Celtic scarf.

About turned and left .....

Captain Lithuania

I am excited for some football to come back on the telly but I won't be following a team. Like others on here, I find it impossible to have an attachment to any club except Hearts.

I used to think I was a Liverpool "fan" until I saw us play them. Really changed it for me. When they play I want them to win, but I could never be a "fan".
