Kim Jong Un

Reports coming in that North Korea's Supreme Leader is gravely ill after having surgery.

Could be a dangerous time for the world as if the coronavirus pandemic isn't enough.

Also the world of tennis, golf and lots of other sports might lose their greatest ever player.

Never once felt threatened due to North Korea. The US and UK? Well... Blair, Bush(Who both destroyed the way we lived) and now Trump! who would nuke anyone for any reason given half the chance. That's another matter. But, hey, let's ridicule NK and Iran who want the same protection other states have in mass.

I have no idea what NK is like to live, only propaganda reporting from state television from the UK/USA, like The BBC and FOX.

NK is a totalitarian state guilty of systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations against it's own people that constitute crimes against humanity according to the UN.

Concentration camps, political arrests, summary executions, torture, sexual violence as state sanctioned punishment. But as long as we don't feel threatened eh?

Pity we didn't leave Iraq and Afghanistan alone anaw.

Maybe we should make sure our people should not need food banks and the NHS does not need charity. No, let's make all countries let us and steal their shit from under them.

They reckon if fatboy pops his clogs then his sister might take over (assuming the army don't break the chain) and whose to say she's not an even bigger nut job than him?

Had a score of 18 on an 18 hole course.

Some boy, but no as good as the Donald, he scored 17 on the same course.

Couldn't remember what it was exactly, knew there was several hole in ones though, hence why I made the light hearted comment.

It's fine.

We have trident.

Once it's finished dealing with Covid-19 it can be used on NK.

Pays for itself.

Does Kim Jong-Un not have any male offspring?

I thought that the leadership was thought of as a Deity, passing from male to male. But then, I'm spectacularly uninformed about political matters in that neck of the wood. It just seems an unlikely place to appoint a female Dear Leader.

Neither do I. I spend a reasonable amount of time in S. Korea, both in Seoul and at the shipyards on Geoje Island, and even the locals never seem to bothered about it.

On a related note, if anyone gets a chance to visit the DMZ, go. Don't think, just go. It's an incredibly strange, yet weirdly beautiful place. This is from the visitor center looking towards the border through the DMZ. It's one of the largest accidental nature preserves in the world, as there is no human interference whatsoever.

Amazing how that information even got out if it is true. Makes you think that someone on his side wants rid off him.

If true, it could go either way for N. Korea really.

It could be one of the greatest moments in history seeing the re-unification of the Country and those poor people becoming free.

Or, it could be a powergrab. Perhaps the Chinese will want to move in.

The only reason it was never invaded after the end of the Korean war is because it is absolutely impossible without enormous loss of human life in South Korea. Otherwise, his dad and him would have been taken out years ago.

I feel really sorry for those poor people that live under that tyranny.

I hope I live to see the day they are free. Imagine how amazing it will be for them to enjoy the simple pleasures in life and learn all the things about the world they previously didn't know. Most of all though, to be reunited with their long lost family & friends on the otherside.

Maybe, they don't want the Americans having bases on their border but I doubt the Chinese would be brave enough to take on South Korea & the Americans if they were willing to fight for it.

The Chinese might invade part of it and turn it into another DMZ.

Aye, not an invasion as such but they'll make sure they are a very influential neighbor.

A former colleague and friend (who sadly died recently, far too young) ran tour groups into NK.

While not naive about what he was allowed to see and what was kept hidden, he reported a lot of expected negative things, but at the same time a lot of positives about the people there, too - most of whom are brought up to believe a certain narrative about how the world works while simultaneously getting on with their lives, having a few beers and raising families the best they can (sounds a bit like everywhere else on the planet).

Authorities there acutely aware that they need better PR abroad, but very fearful of US and SK, and so respond to perceived threats in a way that they view as standing up to bullies.

Leader is clearly a head case, but that’s not a uniquely Korean problem when you take a look closer to home.

An easy country to ridicule, a harder one to properly understand.

I remember a great blog I read (might have been posted here) where someone went by train to Pyongyang from China I'm sure. Think the guy was Austrian.

Biggest takeaway I remember from it was when his train arrived into Pyongyang station, the place was jumping with well dressed people buzzing to and fro, just like any other city centre. Turns out though, his train in was the only train due in or out all day. It was believed that when these trains come in, soldiers are ordered to dress in civilian clothes and mill around the station looking busy and happy, to convey that Pyongyang is just another city.

Was years ago that I read it, but would love to again.

We are all conditioned in a way. People from the UK have a negative view of NK, China and Russia. It’s only when you travel there you realise a lot of the preconceptions aren’t reality. However it would be fantastic news if he was incapacitated as he has no intention to bring the relevant changes needed.

You’re allowed to see North Korea as the disgusting dictatorship that it and dislike America and Britain’s politics. It’s not like an either/or thing. There are plenty reports on NK from independent sources and highly regarded journalists.
