Underrated Hearts players

1980s: Berry and Black. I also thought Jimmy Sandison was a really good player (he just didn't have a chance with the other great defenders we had in those days) but might have been alone in that

1990s: Locke and Millar

2000s: Neilson and Zali

2010s: Suso and Djoum, and maybe Jamie Mac

2020s: Clare (runs and hides)

Jimmy Sandison did great hand-signals at corners. Pity no-one (especially him) knew what they meant, or were meant to signify. He was OK...

Probably my memory. I remember he was 21 or so and just seemed like a really skilful central defender who was also very strong in the tackle. Always just remember being totally unconcerned when he had to fill in for someone injured, same with George Cowie and Ian Jardine around the same time, who were also both very good mostly squad players. Although Jardine got quite a few starts as well.

Ian Jardine was a great player, who unfortunately didn't stay long enough at Hearts.

Jamie MacDonald for me.

The laddie was a tremendous shot stopper and an absolute penalty specialist to boot. I don't believe Alexander was a big enough improvement on MacDonald to warrant the change. In fact, considering the loyalty Jamie showed the club during not just Administration but the previous seasons where wages weren't being paid on time, to me makes me think we should have done better by him.

One club players are a rarity, even more so at this level because one or two good performances can push through a move. We could have had that with MacDonald which would have been special.

We have not improved our goalkeeper one bit since moving him on. Outside of Mclaughlin who left at the first opportunity, letting him go just wasn't worth it.

But for the points deduction we would have stayed up, and his goalkeeping heroics were a big part of that. Sure, he had weaknesses, but name me one player in modern times we've had that didn't?

Agreed, would take him back in a heartbeat now

Our first-choice midfield when we played with Clark, Robbo and JC was so solid as a unit, it was hard for him to establish himself. Like a lot of Hearts fans I never totally took to Kenny Black but he did all the unheralded work and gave us some balance on the left. Black had some shot on him but Jardine's was even better.

Just rewatched the Celtic semi final and he was heroic in that - he played as big a part in the 2012 cup win as Beattie did.

I agree with Neil Berry, very solid and dependable. Not too classy but always gave 100%. I was less keen on Black though
