Revolution - The Beatles?

Your boss were prolific in this area but I don't see Revolution in the list.

Anyone here up for a new theme?

And songs you think fit the pattern of these doozies:

Pictures of Lily - The Who

Kodachrome - Paul Simon

Lola - The Kinks

A Day in the Life - The Beatles

I'm being mean by only starting with four. There are many more songs both before and since the era of those four and I trust y'all to find some.

As before, add another to the list, rather than stating the link.

i have no idea of the connection

The Pill - Lorreta Lynn?

Close enough. My list/theme is a little more geographically specific but this is the right type of song.

Definitely but not for the reason you'd probably think of. I'll explain later

Possibly Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles ?

Heading in the right direction.

Curse my autocorrecting.

"Your boys...", John. Your boys were prolific in this area. Revolution is on a bit of a tangent to the main theme, though.

It is right in the middle of the pack.

There's quite a fascinating selection of songs that make the list.

A big nope from me too :mw_confused:

Absolutely no songs from Rush in the main list and I'd be pretty confident that there are none even tangential.

Since Ri appears to have got the thread, I don't fear a JKB breakdown just yet so will let it run for a while. John might come back with another stab at a Beatles track; there are at least 4 and then Paul McCartney went on to create another couple in his post-Beatles career.

Both songs by The Who that fall into the category have been chalked off. Paul Simon's was a one-off as, I believe, was Lola.

That would have been the fifth had I given five clues.

But... despite coming out at the same time, Your Love is King by Sade doesn't fall into my category. Check it out.

Tearing hair out reduces the need for a lockdown haircut!

And tearing hair is currently what I'm contemplating...it's still a nope from me.

On the up side, I did have a watch of a Your Love is King video on Youtube. Sade is one beautiful woman.

Would it help at all if I added a couple more?

God Save the Queen - Sex Pistols

When I'm Cleaning Windows - George Formby

Both, believe it or not, have something in common with Pictures of Lily!

Funnily, only the Dead Kennedys are specifically on the list but I think it goes without saying that the others are a given.

Probably in a roundabout way, it would be due to lyrics but, as I say, Sade used similar lyrics in a very similar context to Frankie Goes To Hollywood but her record didn't make the list.

If George Formby was doing his thing today and recorded When I'm Cleaning Windows or My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock, they would certainly not make the list. Likewise with most that have been identified so far; definitely the ones from the sixties.

My ding a ling, Chuck Berry?

It's not on the list I'm looking at but I'm sure it's in the broader sphere.

To put anyone out of their misery - if they're still paying attention - I started with a list of songs that were banned by the BBC when, or shortly after, they were released.

Paul Simon for having the brand name "Kodachrome" breaching the BBC's product placement/advertising guidelines. Likewise for Lola, which originally mentioned Coca Cola (later changed to Cherry Cola).

The Beatles were banned for a number of songs interpreted as referencing drug taking.

My Generation was banned not because the "f-f-f-fade away" was a clear dodge of them intending to say, "**** the Hibs" but because the stammering could have been interpreted as mocking people with stammers (or, it may have been that it was an imitation of a young being off his chops on pills.)

FGTH's Relax was famously banned when Mike Read, Mike Read, 275 and 285, Mike Read, Mike Read Nashnul Radio One took offence to the line "When you want to come." I think this was only months after Sade had been singing, "Touch me (your love is king); I'm coming (your love is king)". Perhaps the suits at the BBC didn't know that girls could do such a thing?

The Pill wasn't banned by the BBC but I don't think it would have crossed their radar to even think about banning it. Not a big C&W operation, the beeb. It was banned in the states, though.

The records say that Invisible Sun was banned but the only way I'd have ever heard it was on BBC radio so I don't know what's going on there.

Walk Like an Egyptian was widely played when released but was one of a list of songs blacklisted during the Gulf War. If I'd let that nomination pass, I'd have had to accept Waterloo by Abba. That would have added to the confusion.

I remember lying in my bed in a Bruntsfield flat thinking about heading along to Napier when I heard this event happen. My thoughts then were 'What a !'

My thoughts haven't changed much over the years. Other than now to consider him a UKIP (formerly Tory) .

What the actual ****?

Where's the asterisks gone? I assumed would be replaced by asterisks...not just a blank space.

For the record, I consider Mike Read to be an onanist.

Hold on, IP - I may have blundered in suggesting that one.

According to Wikipedia it was their accompanying video that was BBC-banned.

"The music video for "Invisible Sun" features a collection of video clips taken from the conflict in Northern Ireland. Owing to its subject matter, it was banned by the BBC."

That explains it. I'd quickly googled and seen "ban" so gave you a thumbs up but had that nagging suspicion that I'd heard it on Radio 1 very often while it was in the charts. I didn't think it was that great a song but The Police were at their absolute peak so they were getting maximum airplay. Hunners o' listens.

Agree with you on Mike Read anaw. Tosspot then; tosspot now and tosspot all the way in between.

In total agreement with regards to Mike Read; toss up between him and Noel Edmonds as to who is the biggest tosspot. Anyway, dead easy this one. Connection revealed later but if you know, feel free to add to the list.

1. Our Lips Are Sealed - Fun Boy Three.

2. Have I The Right - The Honeycombs

3. Venus In Furs - Velvet Underground

I'm stumped. For the time being...

It's out specifically those artists or do covers/originals count as well?
