Leon Jones

There's a good article on Leon Jones in today's Sunday Mail (can't find online though).  You might be able to read it through this link though. https://www.pressreader.com/article/282316797148677

He's had no regrets since leaving Hearts for a scholarship at the University of Kentucky. He may even end up playing for the Chinese national side (through his Hong Kong born mother).

He says that Craig Levein told him he was too small, which is why he wasn't offered more than a one year contract.

I'm glad that things have worked out for him. He was a smart lad and I think he could have made the grade at Hearts if the management had faith in him.

I'll die a happy man when all connections to that man are finally cut.

Remember him helping Scotland U16s beat England in Victory Shield. Surprised he wasn't rated.

Chris Hamilton shows maybe the lesson has been learned.

Heard the same from someone who knows him. I thought he sought pastures new on his own account as he was one that definitely had something about him .

Levein told me I was an inch or two too small. Is it any wonder we are where we are with this total dickhead in charge? Will be glad, no overjoyed when the spectre of this man never haunts Tynecastle again!

I struggle with this obsession with height we hear about, not just from CL but other managers and coaches too.  Thank goodness CL didn't have any say when Robbo signed for us!

McLeish did, when he was Rangers manager, and offered him on loan.

Yet he played for years with him - one of our greatest ever strikers....

My worry too. Need Budge, Levein, MacPhee, Murray and just about all those imposters who play for us to get to ****.

Fair play to Leon Jones for trying something different. The too small comment is so Scottish football. Plenty of successful smaller centre backs.

Levein was obsessed with size .

Still likes the land of the giants idea up front

How that man has been allowed to take Hsarts in the direction we've witnessed over past few years is a scandal really

Clueless

This.

In British football you need to be 6’ plus to play centre half. It’s absolutely not an issue in other countries when the ball almost never leaves the ground.

Cannavarro and Mascherano would’ve struggled in this country playing centre half when the ball literally gets shelled up the park to some 6’5 donkey 90% of the game.

Exactly. If you look at the EPL our squad is tiny by comparison. I always remember when Spurs played at Tynecastle and our players physically (as well as technically) looked like kids by comparison.

Unfortunately, smaller players do need to be better players to compensate.

To be fair don't think he was ever going to make into Hearts first team at the time, very commited player, Hearts at time well covered for centre halves, but was a good player at his level.

We will never know as may have got a run re our recent problems at centre back.

I'd also like to see a list of those told they were too small who played for a bigger club/at a higher level than Hearts. It should be endless...

Lord Beni of Gorgie

Levein might have been right with this one though.

Nothing against the lad but this is a bit of a non story.

Stendel seems to like big players too by look of it

Bazzas right boot

Folk getting all excited.

Not many "short" centre halves in the Scottish or British game is there.

Imagine a 5'10 centre defending the shells to the likes of Cosgrove etc.

Unfortunately you need to be over 6ft in Scotland to be a centre half.

Not even news, it's actually pretty much a fact, backed up by the heights of.... The centre halves in the league.

In fairness you could be 5'6 and still beat Uche in the air

My brother helped Leon sort his move to KCU, says he's a great laddie and convinced he'll get picked up in the MLS draft when the time comes.

The guy moved on from Hearts and has played college football since.

This actually really annoyed me and still does.

I realise genetics are genetics and the guys that play in the EPL have insane talent too but there is nothing prohibiting SPL players matching that physicality. Its ridiculous. They are well paid and full time professionals. Callum Paterson is probably the only player in recent times who actually had the physicality to match up against EPL pro's.

Coming out 2nd best in this category seems to me to be an issue around professionalism. A quote from Walker around 2016 (age 23) about stopping eating sweets and fizzy juice has really helped kick his game on really stuck out to me. Our game is woefully unprofessional up here and no one seems to actually attempt to maintain a high standard. Its ridiculous.

Diet and personal fitness are 100% in every professionals hands and its so disappointing to see us paying thousands of pounds to these players and they can't even stay away from bloody Haribo for the sake of their career.

If Stendel can bring in this level of professionalism at last then we should be forever grateful for it.

I believe so. Don’t think he’d  played there before though and Nicky Butt was trying to convert him from a left winger to a hybrid type left back/wing back. I’m sure it was a failed experiment whichever way you view it though

His uni has better faculties than most teams out with the top 4-5 in Scotland. If he was still with us he’d be on loan to a Stirling or stenny or something.

He might not be setting the world on fire, but he’s made a very good decision.

You've made a criticism when you don't know.

I am sure he played once in the 1st team at LB and many times at lower levels.
