Really great songs that you never need to hear again

It happens all the time. A song comes on the radio, a truly great - indisputably great - song that’s so good it’s probably a part of you in some way, but because you’ve heard it so many times, something inside you says “no thanks”.

Happened to me just now. Making dinner in the kitchen and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ came on. My youth, my past, magnificent song and singing, but it’s a struggle. Here’s another example from a guy whose music I love:

Pretty much the entire Stones catalogue. Loved the Stones in my teenage years and early twenties. Still do. But if one of their songs comes on Spotify or something, I'll normally skip it. Every now and again, I'll let it play and think "Man, I forgot how good a tune this is" but then inevitably skip it the next time it comes on.

Agreed. I was thinking ‘Brown Sugar’ and ‘Honky Tonk Women’ as I posted.

Totally get the Beatles thing.

Late 1980's, a bit of a stoner, I loved them. Couldn't get enough of Revolver, Mystery Tour, Pepper, White Album and Abbey Road.

Can't listen to them now.

The Kinks, however, remain. Perhaps just once a year, after a few beers, headphones on when the family are kipping...bliss.

Heroes (Bowie)

I love to boogie (T-Rex)

(More a great band rather than the song)

Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)

A few Elton John songs

William H. Bonney

When I was a teenager I had one of those rocks greatest hits albums so songs like:

toto - hold the line

Boston - more than a feeling

bachman Turner overdrive- you ain’t seen nothing yet

queen -  bohemian rhapsody

and a shit load more. Songs I played over and over again I turn off as soon as I hear them.

A song that was destroyed by Clapton's crap version of it.

Agreed.

And while we’re on the subject, I defy anyone in the world ever to need to hear this again:

been here before

Absolutely the Beatles.

Used to have all their albums on my phone but spent more time skipping past them than actually listening to them.

Finally took them all off a few weeks ago.

Bindy Badgy

Nirvana

They were the band that got me into music, I used to have Nevermind on constant repeat. My tastes are a lot heavier now.

Funny cos I’m the opposite. Hated the Beatles all my life and finally got them in my late 50’s.

I used to love The Cure but really struggle to listen to em now

Robbo-Jambo

ELO

The album A New World Record

Used to love that album to bits but would now struggle to play it.

Don't know why that one in particular tbh. 🤔

Never loved but always liked The Cure. Busked in the city centre in the late '80's/early' 90's and murdered "In Between Days" many times. 😁

I guess this song is a classic. Loved it instantly, bought the album. I would run a fecking mile before I listened to it now.

Not a great song in my eyes. But if I ever hear that 'Don't stop believing' by journey, ever again, Coronavirus better take my soul.

Fair enough on the Elton as he is overplayed but personally love his live version in The Opera House of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

Bennie and The Jets and Crocodile Rock though can go in the bin.

I loved them when they were really dark. Faith, Pornography, even Disintegration. I quite like their poppier stuff but just don't listen to them now

i get that - a bit like that with The Who tbh

I have listened to Bowie in the past but i would never willingly put on anything by him now.

Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)

Innuendo for me. I just happen to think that song is as much of a masterpiece as Bohemian Rhapsody was in 1975.
