Wage cut for players and staff (Statement on 24/4)

Bunny Munro

Recommended Posts

The ones with further years on their contracts should get their heads out of their arses and accept 50% of their comfortable wages for a bit of security and stability.    That's the be all and end all of their calculation.

They're ****ing arseholes.

I get what you’re saying but not all footballers are on huge money to the extent they can write off 50% and also, their numbers are a drop in the ocean compared to the number of UK workers earning in excess of, say, £100k per annum.

I don’t see anyone in my business taking a cut. Or my wife’s business. Are teachers? They aren’t all working.

However, I am disappointed if Hearts players are not helping their own staff by taking affordable cuts themselves, such as Naismith has done.

Edit: and if you don’t like them, you know what to do when it’s time to renew your season ticket or renew your Sky subscription.

Sky broadcast tons of stuff and have developed some sort of reality check over the years to less fortunate customers. You do have to negotiate but at least they do make cuts.

Footballers,  its tough isn't it.

You want to support Hearts just not the ***** that would see the receptionist out of a job.

You are correct not all earn a fortune,  but I would be staggered if any fell beyond the poverty line at our club even on 50%, and of course it wasn't a permanent 50%.

But Hearts are a drop in the ocean compared to some other clubs. Kind of in the middle. We have those who want to help and those who don't.

Leeds reacted brilliantly as a group. Barcelona players too.

Others not a peep.

Moral dilemmas eh

Fair enough. FW has every right to get what’s best for the players though and if he feels the players have been put into a difficult situation and are (correctly Imo) upset as to how this has played out he’s going to defend his clientele.  I don’t think he’s mischief making in the slightest though and he always comes across as completely professional.

The Directors of HMFC PLC have a duty to do what they believe to be in the interest of the business and club in the very short term, after all they will stand up at the AGM not FW or TH. Our circumstances are unique in this current shutdown until the authorities give clear guidance and certainty over our league status. When we have the answer to this question then I think it would be prudent for members of the PFA Scotland to ask for advice, I've said on here before that playing hardball over this is counterproductive and may not end the way some players expect.

Sorry, but your first paragraph 😂

Like I said, if you have contempt for the players, cut off their income by not buying tickets.

I know people will think that,  big organisations etc, but from personal experience I know it to be true and particularly with elderly.

Some money is better than none,  and it boosts figures for advertising.

Contempt for players,  does that mean you have to cut your nose off to spite your face?

Nah, I'll continue to condemn them instead

I’m hoping that out of this whole crisis that sport in general, but in particular football, gets the wake up call it badly needs.

The majorly of people will be cancelling their Sky and BT sport subscriptions and all may not return if they either don’t miss it and/or have found something more productive to fill their time with.  People seeing football players act in such an entitled manner, when the average family are struggling, will not go down well and is unlikely to be forgotten when they are asked to renew.

The top 2 divisions in England live off the money from Sky and are able to rack up eye watering debt levels to either get to, or survive in, the premiership.

Any significant reduction in that revenue leads to the collapse of the status quo and the exit of the billionaire owners.

Completely agree.

It pains me, as I’m usually first out the traps to renew.  It isn’t even the uncertainty of what league we’ll be playing in that is stopping me, it’s the reaction of the players whose inflated wages are paid by us mere mortals who are carrying the weight of the world at the moment.

Expecting someone who is on 80% of their income to fork out so these shitebags can continue to get paid 100% of theirs while sitting on their arse doing **** all.  No chance.   I’d bin the lot of them.

They face stark choices in order to save the club going out of business. Exposing them to that is ultimatums, it’s the reality of the situation. If they can’t grasp that maybe they aren’t adults.

No I mean compromising, something the majority of football clubs looks to be doing with their players - treating them as humans and looking at them individually instead of collectively telling them to take a 50% cut with no chance of getting the money back in the future while also asking agents to sound out players for next season.

We don't know what each individual player has said to their club. We do know that in Scotland, we have seen very little sign, Naismith apart, of any player coming out and saying I will take a cut.

If they behaved like adults, they might find they get a little more respect.

The players shouldn’t be given that ultimatum without a group discussion though, that’s the vital part.  It’s been decided and that’s that.  That is also what the pfa are trying to discuss with the club to get a compromise.  It doesn’t look good when the other clubs are promising the players get their money back either.  That will further disillusion players who have been told to halve their wages or do one.

Dusk_Till_Dawn

I get the sense in both England and Scotland that the PFA are fighting to stay relevant here. A lot of players could probably negotiate these things without them and that’s the thin end of the wedge for a union.

All the same, the club should have anticipated this. You can’t cut players wages with impunity.

Correct, especially if there is indeed a clause in there contract that allows us to do this at no cost to the club.

The players don't qualify for the 80% Government support, only the other full time employees i.e. admin, club store, ground staff etc. The PFA are asking the club to defer part of the players wages as other clubs have come out to say they will do. Which is all well and good for clubs who are guaranteed Premier League football the next time a season starts. In my opinion, AB would have done the same thing if she know that we were in the top flight, but until someone confirms this, then 50% is the prudent steps.

The Players have

Failed to perform under Levein, MacPhee and Stendel.

equalled then worst ever run in the clubs 146 year history.

won only 3 league matches in the whole of 2019?

3 league wins at home in about 18 months?

won only 2 league matches in the whole of 2020?

Currently sit 4 points adrift at the bottom of the league having just lost to St Mirren in the biggest match of the season without registering a single shot on target.

Rebelled against the new manager making them attend match days if they aren’t “fit”.

Rebelled against being asked to report to training daily when “injured”.

Rebelled against being asked to train harder and to learn a new formation and playing style.

Ran to the press to air and leak negative stories about the club.

and have now refused the clubs request to take a drop in wages to safe guard the future of not only the club but the non playing staff who spend their days making the players life’s easier.

This group of players better negotiate terminations of their contracts ASAP as none of them, Naismith aside, will ever be forgiven IMO. I’ve never known a group of players so out of touch with us, the fans. They have no shame, which we knew with their performances over the past two seasons but I never knew just how much they didn’t care about us or the club.

Sack them all.

How do you know there is no compromise? At no point have we given the players an ultimatum.

This isn’t a negotiation though so nothing to comprise on. We might not like it but if 50% reduction is what it takes to save the club and people’s jobs then that’s it. Or should we compromise and go out of business ? Just so a few players and some of our fans feel better about it all. Tough times require tough decisions, no compromise required on this point.

The club don’t have a contract with the ‘group’ though do they. Technically they can’t discuss an employees contract of employment with another employee.
To be honest if you believe our players should get all their wages over this period, either paid on time or deferred to a later date, yet the non-playing staff all take a 20% pay cut then I’d suggest you are just about the only one on this forum with those thoughts.  Think about it.
It was surely clear from day 1 that a massive reduction, circa 50%, in playing staff costs was required to cover the 3-6 month period with no income. That’s the bulk of our cost structure. How does deferred payment of 100% of wages resolve that problem?

A guy I know went into hospital to get his throat checked as it had been bothering him 5 days ago. Not symptoms of Coronavirus just a bad throat but they decided to test him anyway to be sure, fair enough good idea eh. They told him to go home and dont leave the house, if the test is positive we’ll have called you within 24 hours as of course it’s serious and you need to know ASAP. If the test is negative we just won’t call you at all.

He waited 48 hours to be safe, never heard anything and so assumed he was in the clear and went to work the day after. He got a call when he got home from work to say he has tested positive and needs to self-isolate. He’s a ticket man on public transport. He was in tears. Not because of his own health but he’s worried he’s potentially handed it on to someone who could die and all after following all the rules to the letter.

That's dreadful. Where is your friend based.....?

The players, whilst contractually correct, have made a right mess of this.

They've misjudged things here, and as the news gets worse and worse over the next few weeks, they'll look more out of step with their base.

It'll be a long road back for them and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a total clear out when all is said and done.

Been said before, the vast majority of footballers are parasites on society, living a lifestyle that most will never reach and yet refusing to give up any of it to help their fellow man. Led by the sour faced ***** that is Wishart, they demand everything, yet will yield nothing.
