Why does this always happen?

When we have **** all threat up front we seem to be good at the back, but when we finally sign attack minded players who know where the goal is we go to shit at the back.

Will we ever get the balance right?

It does seem like that, doesn’t it?

The reality is we’ve had good teams in the past where we were decent at both ends.

I think Stendel really needs to calm it a bit and look for more balance in the selection and set-up.

It can be done, we’ve had it before!

Not had any balance since the Championship.

I love the attacking philosophy but when  in the past 3 league games we have conceded 11 scored only 2 and never been infront you must question the guy making that decision.

It’s a it like going out for a fancy meal. It looks great on the plate but when you taste it, it lacks seasoning. Trouble is you’re unsure where to start to season it as it’s bland all over.

Individually we have one or two decent players but the constant chopping and changing and tinkering with our set up means we have no fluency. I thought Damour would’ve been better in the midfield rather than Langer or Macdonald. We lacked any decent bite and it got to the stage that very time they threatened, it had goal written all over it.

DS has a hard job on his hands. He might have the philosophy to implement this new style of attacking football but sadly he doesn’t have the players to carry it out.

Another false dawn has came and survival is our ultimate goal. It’s got to the stage where I’m so deflated I’m not even fussed about a cup run

Am not going to shut up about it cause it’s so glaringly obvious where all the problems come from.

St Johnston:

Start the game very well. Get into our rhythm pretty much straight from kick off. Create a few chances. St Johnston score a scruffy goal out of nothing. The team takes a breath, calms down and starts back exactly how they where pre goal. We turn the game around and go in 2-1 at half time. We start the 2nd half knowing St Johnston will come at us, which they do. They start launching long balls that turn us and start getting into space regularly. May fires a nothing ball into the box that Joel flaps at, pushes out into the box when it’s a routine save. That starts the wobble. St Johnston then score from a terrible shot and a terrible attempted save. All confidence in the keeper is lost. It kills everything. Joel turns that powder puff shot round the post and we run out comfortable winners. It’s that simple.

Killie:

Start the game bang at it. Ripping killie apart, feels like we are building to a goal. Killie launch long out balls just to try relieve some pressure. We are sloppy at dealing with them but don’t look threatened. They manage to get to the byline and shoot straight at Joel. Instead of standing tall and catching the shot, he turns away like he’s scared of the ball and it results in a corner. He then starts to come for the corner then goes back, leaving him out of position. Header straight at him and he can’t save it. We dust ourselves down and start again. We go back to creating chances and playing well. One ball over the top, a simple ball over the top. Keeper comes, stops, even with his team mates yelling at him to stay in his goals, he comes out and is chipped. Game over. He then turns into water as the 3rd goes through him.

Celtic:

More than competing first half. Playing well and causing some problems, let’s not pretend many teams go to celtic park and even do as much as that. Game plan is working well. One powder puff shot and Joel sells the jerseys. He pushes the shot he should catch into the middle of the box and then can’t stop the powder puff rebound. Look at the reaction to the players after that goal. The rest is history.

Everything stems from the keeper. He is the weak link and everyone knows it. When you have a out field player that’s not having a good game or isn’t fit etc you can carry him, not pass him the ball etx. You can’t do that with the keeper. He is killing everything. 17 shots on target in 3 league games, 11 goals. Nearly every shot at him results in a goal. A high press and a high line is a risky tactic, I get that. It is a tactic that we are making work, going forward. We simply have to, we must, drop the keeper or we are relegated. 11 goals in 3 games. That is bananas.

Good post mate.

Quite simply we must change to Bobby on Saturday. Nit the greatest keeper but at least he is a decent shot stopper.

JP is seriously undermining our attempts to survive.

With Boyce, Naismith and Walker we have plenty attacking threat.  They don't need both full backs and all the midfield players standing beside them cluttering up the attack.  When absolutely everyone goes forward a simple long ball and our weak defenders in Souttar and Halkett are exposed.  And then the worst goalie we have had perhaps including Kurskis.

We're playing schoolboy football.  Can't believe Stendel hasn't worked out what Paulo Sergio did in his season.  You need to be pragmatic and play to the strengths of the team you have, not the one you wish you had.

The system will work and has worked. Yeah we’ve had some errors at the back, which team doesn’t. The problem that we have is that every shot is a goal with Joel. Puts huge pressure on the back 4 and the team in general. When was the last time we went a full 90 minutes and stopped the opposition having a shot on target? The psychology of knowing one error costs us a goal must be soul destroying for Souttar, Halkett etx.

The Treasurer

The likes of Souttar and Halkett are not in the best of form, no doubt about that, but they have the added pressure of knowing that if they don't prevent their opponent from shooting then it is almost a certain goal.

The problem isn’t the attacking style it’s that we can’t defend corners and when we do the goalie chucks one in anyway. Last 2 games we’ve conceded 3 goals from corners and the goalie as been culpable for another 3 (and one v st j the week before)

I think they would receive a massive lift from a change in keeper.

When i played at the back the difference it would make from having someone that you trust to someone who you don't is massive. When you don't trust a player you're not only thinking about what you need to do but you also start thinking about what you need to do when they mess up. Means you take focus off your roles and therefore end up making more mistakes.

Mixed bag every week.

There's only 2 consistent players recently, Clare and the keeper and Clare is out of position, no matter what anybody thinks.

Years and years of tinkering and the revolving door of players, injuries etc.

It's mistake riddled performances all over the pitch and has been for a long long time.

Certain for relegation and a massive rethink.

Right now I think the gk is costing us.

V Killie and saints a competent keeper would have seen us have 6 points.

This does not excuse the defence in general, but imo a competent shot stopper would have seen us win the games.

Every half chance seems to end up a goal for the other team.

Our issues with goals was caused largely by injuries imo.

Naismith, Washington, Walker and even Uche were all injured for large parts over the last year.

DV was also a shocker as a replacement for Lafferty.

Good post well constructed. I can’t disagree with you I think loan deals are at best complicated re Joel . I know it’s not the same but when MacDonald and cochrane went to Dunfermline I can only guess that Hearts would have wanted them playing in the first team every week when fit . Pereira needs dropped for sure until we know the terms of his loan with Man U I really don’t know what will happen .

What I’m wondering, is why can’t we find a manager who sets us up to both attack AND defend well. Levein with his regimented automatons who got bollocked for trying something a bit different in attack, and now Stendel who seems to see the back four and keeper as just another five forwards... it’s old fashioned I know, but can we not try and defend and attack? 😐

**** the loan deal.  If he continues to start we will go down simple as that.  There are games we could be taking all 3 points but instead we are taking nothing and it’s the keepers fault.  What is more important avoiding relegation or honouring some loan deal to Man Utd????  We must drop him now.  The buck stops with Stendel.

I agree with every word here. A good keeper wins you games or keeps you in them. He inspires zero confidence. We’re just hoping we can score more than we concede

It’s a shame we couldn’t  use him like a kicker in American football. Just bring him on for corners cos he was also costing us goals, arguably a cup final along with Bobby who will replace Joel if he ever gets dropped. Admittedly I think Bobby is the lesser of 3 evils

Joel is in a situation that he cannot come back from. His stats are atrocious. Nearly 60% of shots on target result in goals. Crazy.

Look at Liverpool, I am not comparing multi million pound world superstars to us, just their situation. Klopp has always played the high press. He was scoring goals but losing too many games due to poor goal keeping. He’s brought in Alison and now look at them. Yes they have VVD which helps but that can only help to a certain extent. If VVD makes a mistake he has a solid keeper behind him to bail him out. Which happens. Souttar and Halkett clearly don’t trust the keeper. They also aren’t being supported by the keeper. Joel should be directing the back 4, yelling at them and telling them where they need to be, he isn’t. I’d play any many on Saturday ahead of Joel.

The only thing that isn’t working with Stendel ball is zonal marking at set plays.

You're spot on buddy. Very well summised.

We've other issues, but this is our biggest. Another goalie, I think we have maybe 4 points or 6 instead of 1 from those games.

I really really like Dan. I'm desperate for it to work. If he doesn't play Bobby this Sat, he's got trouble on his hands.

Two of their goals last night were three passes from deep in their own half straight through the middle of our team, unopposed or intercepted. Pop-pop-pop-boom. That’s how easy it was. I don’t particularly rate Pereira either, but he wasn’t playing outfield and in a position to intercept the ball before they bore down on goal either.

Halkett is upfront more than he is in defence.Think it was the Killie game while still at 0-0 and I'm thinking why the **** is Halkett up front again.

Halkett started his career as a forward. He is no central defender but reasonably competent if he has to be, to help out if required type thing. He likes to link with midfield and get forward himself, maybe time (as I've said for long enough) to have him play in the defensive midfield position with a solid defender behind him. It's similar to the Clare situation with him linking through midfield and being left exposed at the back when the obvious solution there is having Smith behind him. We have a severe lack of central defenders, really could've done with getting Jimmy Dunne back, comfortable on the left side to replace Berra and not playing Dikamona on the left when he's so obviously a right sided defender. Can play as an out and out centre-half as well as get over to the right to help stop players getting crosses in. Whatever happens re relegation or survival we need a whole new back line as far as i'm concerned. White and Garuccio are not going to be long-term I don't think, Hickey will be away soon enough. Souttar thinks he's better than he actually is. We've struggled for years at left back with no sign of a solid out and out player arriving. And don't get me started on goalies! The whole defence is a total disaster waiting to happen, and already has been in fairness.

Not all that good though - especially with a couple of them penalties

Didn't know that about Halkett just assumed he had always been a centreback when we signed him.

Yes, he was a centre-half going through the lower leagues with Livingston but started out as a forward with Rangers, probably the reason he's scored as many, if not more than our forwards have.

Agreed but Celtic will do that. If you have even a keeper the standard of Jamie Mcdonald he bails you out when they do that to you. He forces them to make a chance AND finish it well. Teams always make chances, they're not having to work to score them. At the other end of the pitch, we are. Huge, huge weight around our neck

Again agreed all round Buzz

Was an lb in my day and the difference a confident goalie makes is hard to quantify, its such a big thing which ripples through a team.

Exactly as I see it. Booby should be handed the gloves and we as a support need to cheer him from the rafters...

Any financial penalty relating to playing poppadom hands is small beer to the inevitable consequences of persisting with him. Yes his distribution is generally top notch but the reality is that almost 1 in two shots on goal go in which is the worst stat in the division. Saw praise last night for a double save, they were right at him FFS, he couldn't have got out the way even if he wanted too!

The system doesnt work

11 goals conceded shows that.

I take it nobody witnessed the performances of the Killie keeper and the St Johnstone keeper then.

They are just as crap as our own.

It's a team game and we're a million miles from being one. On and off the park.

Id add Walker, Henderson, Moore and Washington to this list as well as they were as good as new signings under Stendel.

I do think either of our other keepers would be a better option than Joel right now but I take your point

As for the rest, you are correct. Unfortunately it’s going to take a bit of luck, a sending off or a couple of lucky goals to catch a break and bring everyone together. I still think a win on Saturday is probable and that we are capable of going on a wee run.
