For a large period of the timeframe they are looking at, the overwhelming majority hadn't been offered both doses so you'd expect it to be much higher (same idea as the infographic posted earlier). Would most of those who died have died anyway with vaccination, almost certainly no, but what it would have looked like in reality, we'll never know. Vaccines work though to a very positive extent, no doubt about that, just offering context. For a better comparison you'd have to compare them by ratio. It will still paint vaccines in a very positive light, but it wouldn't be quite so staggering a slap in the face as 39k vs 640 Edited September 13, 2021 by Taffin

That is indeed the key message, albeit I would add one caveat. As ever with the illustration of stats (even from trusted sources such as the ONS), the intended message can be skewed by the choice of start dates. The period covered was the first half of the year, however the "vulnerable groups" weren't fully vaccinated early in the year. The majority of the Covid related deaths occurred in the period from January to April, i.e. there were relatively few double vaccinated people for much of that period. I would like to have seen a month by month breakdown, with the expectation that the ratio of unvaccinated/vaccinated deaths would end up reversed as more than 95% of the vulnerable groups are now fully vaccinated. Having spent all my working life dealing with politicians I can assure you that honesty is a very rare commodity. For them politics is a game and they will tell what they consider to be inconsequential little white lies just to score points over any opponent, to get votes or most often, to look after number one, themselves; the truth is of no consequence and even when caught out they will come up with some guff like 'it wasn't meant to be interpreted like that' or 'I said what I thought was correct at the time.' Us, the general public, are simply pawns to be used with no thought for the consequences. In Scotland the Covid passport was announced with a set start date but with no practical thought of how it would work for the sole purpose of political point scoring in Sturgeon's ongoing but extremely tedious and boring game of Scotland v England. 👍

HartleyLegend3
That's just splendid, Sky news asking the Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi, who would not answer the question that lockdown restrictions might return at Christmas and stop families gathering together. XB52
Can't see any way that lockdowns will be brought back in. If numbers increase in England with the schools being back I could see them doing a double u turn on Covid passports but that's it. Will be really pushing the booster jag soon before winter kicks in

The virus isn't seasonal, human behaviour is. You're more likely to meet up indoors with windows closed in winter.

But if the virus is hosted and spread between humans by humans, wouldn't human behaviours being seasonal equate to the virus being seasonal? Or is the effects of the virus are seasonal more accurate? Like turkey consumption is seasonal, but they do exist in summer.

No the virus being seasonal would suggest that it somehow weakens and becomes less transmissible depending on the season. It doesn't. We've just seen cases ramp right up in the middle of summer, due to human behaviour (we came out of restrictions).

Being seasonal literally just means something correlates with the seasons(?). Have you got any links to show that it doesn't? The last article I read about it seemed to suggest they didn't know yet, but that was quite a while ago in fairness.

I can't find the article I read several months ago but I did find this more recent one and will hold hands up to being wrong. Seemingly temperature and humidity can have some effect on it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/news/2021/aug/24/covid-19-seasonal-pattern-flu-coronavirus

I'm also not right, I read another article when trying to find the one I read before. I'm viewing it in far too black and white/literal manner...viewing it the same way people shop etc as my definition of seasonal when actually you're meaning in the same way vegetables are seasonal (they literally wouldn't grow at other times of years, not that demand is high etc) I always assumed Flu was seasonal entirely because of human behaviours. Every day is a school day 👍

I'd say, you're more inclined to have the sniffles, sneezes or a cough during the winter, which would be more likely to spread the virus. Feck knows, I work on roofs . It's a young man's game, ri. Hope you've got plenty in the book to see you through the winter. 👍 Keeping busy just now though, aye. Few months in the North Sea so nice to be close to home for a change. Superb.

Do you think there might be more restrictions on the way? Sadly I can see a lot more people ignoring and openly campaigning against them. It'll be frustrating but if it needs to be done.
