I don't agree that it should be self-regulated, nor do I, by law, require the card. Indeed, nor should anyone be challenged (routinely) for not wearing a mask. To mitigate this, I have been in very few supermarkets since March, and feel very aware of people watching and judging, as is apparently their prerogative in a world in which we have been encouraged to distrust those not following guidance. It's an interesting bind the government find themselves in with this one - in a world of (government-supported) increasing self-identification and fear of discrimination by accident, they'd be on pretty shaky ground if they demanded a physical and psychological examination to establish the veracity of claims of severe distress (although benefit spongers appear a legitimate target for such an approach, so perhaps not so shaky after all) . Anyway, in other words, feckum. 👍 I think on the face if it, its ridiculous that it is self regulated but I'm sure the SG , NHS Scotland and so on took into account the impact on resources of e.g GP sign off required. Tommy Brown
We are going round in bloody circles. Lockdown for a month, then ease restrictions, oh the R rate is going back up, lock down again. This will be forever until a vaccine exists. At the start, protect the NHS. Speaking as someone who has underlying problems and would end up in hospital if I catch it. My group must take extra care and do as much shielding as possible, but let everyone else get on with their lives. The current will just never work. Edit addition: Everyone must also accept the new normal though for their own health. Social distancing, hygiene, facemasks. Brighton Jambo
What I don’t understand is this: Patrick Vallance went on TV and said if we did nothing cases would be at 50,000 a day by mid October. Action was taken and now as we enter November daily cases are less than half that. So, based on the above, how can suddenly the projections be that this is out of control and numbers are worse than the worst case scenario. It just doesn’t make sense. Victorian
It's the matter of scale I have been talking about. It didn't take any special insight of course as it was bleedin' obvious. The people blundering around with cotton wool in their ears wouldn't face it. The scale of this will hopelessly swamp our resources and now the governments are having to do something about it. The usual suspects will no doubt find ways to deny it.
frankblack
Unless the governments wake up and take unpopular enforcement actions we will be going round in a loop of lockdown, open up, numbers growing again, and repeat. Victorian
When the 50,000 cases per day prediction was made it was dismissed by saying it's just modelling and that modelling is wrong. The current state of affairs is worse than the 50,000 per day status. A lot of scientists are on the tv programmes this morning and they're clearly worried with what they see. They aren't all hunched over a set of modelling scenarios. They're looking at real information about the epidemic and the NHS. Professor Semple of Liverpool University rightly pointed out that more people are being successfully treated but that the average duration of stay in hospital is longer. He was rightly alluding to what will happen when the volume of hospital patients becomes such that people will no longer get access to the treatment being given to today's patients. That's not an observation from a model. It's a sober realisation that next month's patients wont get that longer stay in hospital to be treated, because they'll be lucky to see the inside of a hospital.
