Really encouraging reading. Regarding the part in bold does anyone know what sort of numbers are usually in intensive care overnight as a total? 4 for Covid19 sounds very low but without it as a percentage of intensive care patients it's quite hard to judge. Are we talking 30% of patients in ICU being there with Covid, or 70%?

Doesn't answer your question but gives an idea.

Critical Care underpins emergency and elective work in all acute hospitals.  Annually, more than 35,000 of the most severely ill or injured patients require specialist care and treatment in Scottish Critical Care Units.

I’m curious at what point the SG acknowledges the numbers and the rhetoric reflects the reality. 4 in ICU and zero deaths for weeks on end. Obviously we need to keep an eye on things but freaking out over every new positive case seems a major overreaction at this point. protect the vulnerable (care homes...etc) and keep testing but surely we should be focused on keeping people working rather than Covid bingo every day.

I think the schools opening is their big worry. Nobody really knows how the opening of schools will effect things.

If the virus gets into and rips through a school, that’s a lot of infected kids/adults. It does not seem to effect young kids in much of a meaningful way, so no risk there. But if they pass it onto parents/grandparents, it could have quite a big effect on both cases and deaths.

If the schools open and nothing really changes with the figures through September/October time; there will be no real argument to be as cautious as we are currently are being.

It gives an insight as I didn't even have a ball park figure. Appreciate I could have looked it up maybe, thank you for sharing what you found 👍

Should point out that those figures include high dependency units and intensive care so not sure what the actual figures are in ICU.

23 ICU units in Scotland though. 4 Covid-19 patients is nothing. (apologies to anyone affected by it)

Unfortunately there will be mass hysteria if even one grandparent or parent gets covid due to their child / grand child passing it on to them if they get it whilst at school.   Itll be similar to the hysteria regarding pubs at the present time.

32 cases linked to a single pub in Aberdeen is worth bringing up.

Yes but they are tracking people who attended the pub etc so got it under control.  This will be the future for a long time so lets just realistic and accept it will happen without the doom laden headlines.  AS long as its being monitored by track and trace. etc

As I mentioned earlier in the thread I was in 3 pubs in Eyemouth in the last 10 days or so, only one did track and trace and the other 2 didn't bother their arse. 2 pubs I was in in Berwick both did it but the amusement arcade in Spittal (with kids running everywhere) didn't.

Thos pretty much sums up my views. We need to stop the panic spreading and use herd immunity to get through this.

Its important but a covid19 update is not the place for it

These updates are increasing being used as a platform for the Scottish Nicola Party to showcase Dear Leader into our homes with her own special brand of newspeak.

It's just as well most rational people agree with her then. 😏

Some of the pant wetters on here won’t like that but it’s where I’ve been on this for a couple of months now. It isn’t going to go away it’s simply waiting for us to come out again. Until we really face it we don’t know what’s going to happen. There’s basically people wetting themselves almost at every infection it’s ludicrous stuff.

We don’t even know if herd immunity will even work! Dangerous article.

Proven treatments are what we need progress with. Not a mere hope for the best and back to work everyone.

Can we blame Covid19 for the latest fiasco with exams in Scotland or should that go into the SNP thread as they are responsible for failing education system in Scotland?

Yes let's blame the SNP for the best ever Higher/Advanced Higher results.

Very nippy isn't it, all these successful students?

This bit certainly isn't very promising

"Earlier this week, a King’s College London pre-print suggested that immunity to Covid-19 can vanish within months, indicating that the virus could become endemic.

The researchers found that 60 per cent of people retained the “potent” level of antibodies required to resist future infections in the first two weeks of displaying symptoms.

However, that proportion dropped to less than 17 per cent after three months.

Prof Jonathan Heeney, a virologist at the University of Cambridge, said the findings had put “another nail in the coffin of the dangerous concept of herd immunity”.

Depends on the context. The way the virus has been controlled is through changes in human behaviour.

I am. Have you actually looked at the pass rates? They don't support your narrative of the SNP destroying the education system.

as you have probably  said yourself at some point - this is a new virus where the experts are continually learning - findings / guidance have changed before and no doubt will again - might be the biggest study in Europe but it’s no-where near conclusive proof for anything at this stage

just take a minute think high-level and I’m (fairly) sure you’ll agree

I'm sure you'll agree that opting for herd immunity when there's no evidence to suggest that it will work, and would risk tens of thousands of lives, would be absolutely crazy.

(I'm not sure many playground arguments involve presenting evidence from the most thorough study so far on the topic btw).

The education system we had covered everyone, regardless of where you came from. What we have now is tiered with those who are comfortable and whose children attend 'performing schools' being deliberately favoured favoured over others.

If you think that's fair and a successful system, then you must have different understanding of fair and successful.

Astonishing that the estimated exam results have been lowered in 25% of cases (125000 children that is) and almost 20% of these were kids in poorer areas. Something has gone wrong somewhere and only the students will suffer in the long run I'm afraid.

The education system in Scotland is in its worst place in 50 years.

The separatists are surely part of the problem.

However, having said that I don’t believe outcomes would be that different irrespective of who was in power.

74% pass rate this year for deprived area students compared to 65% last year. If that figure had been 85% then you can be sure all the unionists would be out banging on about how the results are a farce and high grades were just thrown out to students on a whim to bump the numbers up.
