Getting the contain right is all about opinions, I think we nearly got it right.

You only get it right if you apply every principle.    Very quickly shut down all mass gatherings.   Strict controls and monitoring of international travel.   Large scale testing and tracing.

To be fair,   a really,  really good contain stage like that does save lives but it also shields the majority from exposure.    Later on,   those people still have to be exposed at some point.     It's unavoidable unless every single case is treated and it is eradicated.

Exactly, we would need to eradicate then barricade us all in on our island until a vaccine was found for everyone else on the planet. Totally unrealistic.

It's the theoretical side of it and it has been done in the past with other things.    But totally impossible with the dynamics of this virus and in today's world.     Thankfully the vaccine element of the process will be kept out of the dangerous hands of politicians and dictators.    I hope.

If we'd quarantined infected persons, run contact tracing then localised mass testing on everybody they'd come into contact with then it could have been contained or slowed to a crawl.

Instead, our idiots in Downing St chose to let it run wild so "herd immunity" could be reached.

Can't help but think it was all about penny pinching at the start by the government and look where it's got them.As you say above we should have done all that stuff but it would have cost.

The 3 week initial lockdown was a bit optimistic by the looks of it you could safely add two more on to that which would take you to early May which would be more realistic for an assessment of how it’s going.

It will, until someone has to pay for it, then the politicians will get involved.

And who gets the vaccine (assuming they manage to develop one), everybody or just those who are vulnerable, a bit like the flu jab.

Totally agree, lock down until the end of the month minimum! When do you think this will be announced? My work are sending out emails expecting to open next week!

But who would have listened? Would it have made an iota of difference what the WHO said?  You just need to look through this thread to see it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference.  Only 3 weeks ago a lot of folk even on here were still spewing " Tis only the flu" or that people were being pant wetters, even though Italy and Spain were on their knees.  Now some of the same folk are raging at the government and at the WHO for basically doing the same thing months ago when you'd have been roundly mocked for being a tin foil hat wearing arsehole.

The WHO were slated for their overreaction to swine flu (an overreaction that probably did stop it from turning into a proper pandemic). Never gonna keep everyone happy. A classic case of damned if they do, damned if they don't. Trump said worse and as per usual is acting like he himself took it seriously and didn't downplay it even though it's all there in black and white for the world to see.

Catching it before it spreads

Cases continue to decline in New Zealand

New Zealand is now into its 15th day in lockdown, and its number of virus cases appear to be steadily decreasing.

There were just 29 new cases confirmed today - the lowest in two weeks - following 50 on Wednesday, 54 on Tuesday and 67 on Monday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern thanked fellow Kiwis for staying home, saying "you are breaking the chain of transmission and you did it for each other... you have saved lives".

She also announced stricter quarantine measures for all people arriving from overseas. They will now go straight to a managed facility rather than being allowed home.

Hmmm the WHO have been absolutely chronic throughout this whole pandemic so I'm not sure we should be hanging on the words of those advising them.

Possibly not.

The devil is in the detail and right now that looks bleak.

The UK already has a higher death toll at the same stage than Italy and Spain. Faster rates of infection than both had and that's with our non-existent testing regimen.

A piss weak 'lockdown' compared to both Italy and Spain.

Multiple flights daily from pandemic hotspots decanting passengers with no checks.

No we shouldn't be hanging on every word. We won't need to as this all unfolds before our eyes.

We need to stop counting dying from and with symptoms as the same thing.

Why?

To make things look better.

If it wasn't for this new pandemic, yes these people would die eventually, just not now and may have lasted months and years longer.

This is back to ach people die any way, people die of the flu every year, it's only one third of the current registered deaths, the 80+ group with only a 5% increase (10% flu death rate to 15% is a 50% increase)

I get the point of separating out the data between 'pure' and 'related' but needs registering.

This is a highly contagious disease on near infinity levels of infection compared to the flu with no vaccine and if no measures i.e herd community anticipated to kill nearly one per cent of the population in months.

Well so far only one overweight man with hypertension has responded to treatment at the ERI. The rest all died. They were living with high blood pressure but died of Covid 19...but you reckon they are using these people to bump up the deaths figure?

Yes we separate the data but certainly not hide in background which is what some governments like to do.

These folk will be counted formally as in hospital and will have been tested?

Its the home care and community deaths with symptoms not tested is the challenge.

Do we need some post death testing, modelling to determine a percentage.

Death stats might be massaged into numbers that will hopefully engage the folk who have just recently drawn up their own personal lockdown laws, but not enough to persuade the obedient majority that the baw's on the slates.

Possibly, maybe even probably, it wouldn't have made a difference on this occasion but they have reputational integrity they need to look after for future events, otherwise they'll lose a lot of authority.

For example, there will be an investigation into the handling of all this by Governments, WHO etc. If that report that Taiwan was warning them in December about human to human transmission is correct and that they've not acted then that's very damaging. If they had acted at the time, warned Governments, encouraged lock downs but everyone ignored them then subsequently when all the dust has settled people would say, well WHO was trying to tell us. Then when the next pandemic comes along, and it will, people will be more likely to listen to them. Instead, they appear to have potentially dilly dallied and it's going to reflect badly on them so they'll lose authority by the next crisis rather than have gained it.

I'm not looking at this through the lens of this pandemic, it was always going to be a mess as humans never truly believed something like this would happen to them, and the thing is, most humans that have ever lived have been right about that, but we are unlucky (well not that unlucky, our own actions led to this, and will be the cause of the next one), but I am certain that something like this will happen again and possibly in our lifetimes (at least mine, I'm 32) and it will be worse than this. Humans have continuously destroyed the natural habitat of wild animals, we are coming into contact with species in ever increasing ways and every time we increase the risk that virus jumps the species barrier and leads to things like this.

Sounds like polis aren't going to be taking any shite this weekend:

Greater Manchester Police have urged people not to flout lockdown rules over Easter after officers broke up 660 parties last weekend.

The force said there were 1,132 coronavirus-related breaches reported between Saturday and Tuesday, including 494 house parties – some with DJs and fireworks – as well as 166 street parties.

Officers also dispersed 122 groups gathering to play sports and 173 gatherings in parks, and dealt with 112 incidents of anti-social behaviour and public disorder.

Northamptonshire Police's, Chief Constable, Nick Adderley, has said the force will now ramp up the enforcement of coronavirus regulations.

Adderley said the “three-week grace period is over”, and people in the county could now face fines or a criminal record.

According to the police chief, a small number of people had been flouting the regulations - with some officers being “baited” by members of the public.

He said the force may have to resort to more extreme measures such as road blocks and searching shopping trolleys should people continue to break the rules.

"These are not guidelines anymore. This is the law. We haven’t issued any fixed penalty notices, but we have charged a number of people with Covid-related offences.

We’ve had examples of people sunbathing in the park, having barbecues in the park, we’ve had large gatherings of family members.

To those people, I am saying: your time is up."

The Welsh government has already stated lockdown goes on.   The other devolved governments are expected to follow.     A pretty clear indication that they believe it's more important to send out the right message at the right time than to stick rigidly to the four nations collegiate policy.

Everyone knows lockdown will continue.    Easter weekend looming.    Announce extension before or after Easter weekend?    Shouldn't even be in doubt.

What on earth do they expect to happen if they leave people to their own notions of lockdown at the very end of the 3 week period without a firm and coherent announcement?

Every govt and leader needs to state today that lockdown will continue, the next review period will be announced on...

Then make it clear do not being going to beauty spots, beaches, parks and so on to mingle this weekend.  You must keep moving.  No street parties, stay within your own home boundaries apart from your 1 a day exercise.

Don't wait for adverts, interupt tv, radio shows as they are in flow.

Use every social media avenue and so on....

New Zealand is now into its 15th day in lockdown, and its number of virus cases appear to be steadily decreasing.
