Murray relies on the anti-independence, or to put it another way, British nationalist vote. There's no other explanation for why in an area that voted Remain by some distance in the EU referendum, a majority would then vote for a Brexit supporting party in the general election.

This as others have said should be in the Shed but one track minded SNP supporters drag their single issue into everything.

By all accounts Murray is a good constituency MP and has built up some personal support beyond the core Labour support. The sort of thing that is necessary to win elections rather than maintain a pure socialist (or for that matter nationalist) agenda that makes people feel virtuous but at the end of the day achieves nothing.

Labour was hardly "Brexit supporting". The policy was to negotiate a better deal and then have a second referendum on which the leader would be neutral. In the overall UK picture (and it was a UK election) the best practical hope of stopping Brexit was to elect Labour MPs (unless ypu believed Jo Swinson had a chance of forming a Government)

Been meaning to ask this for a while. In the Acknowledgements section at the start, amongst those listed as having contributed to the book was a certain Ken Fruish. I have only ever once met anyone with the surname Fruish (I believe his first name was Ken). He was a teacher at Carrick Knowe Primary around 1973-74 and took the school football teams. Sadly he left teaching to cycle round the world. We heard he got as far as India.

If it is the same guy he was sadly missed by us in the school teams. If anyone on here knows any more I would be delighted if you could post it on here. Thanks!

What a great read this was. Late at night reading about the other late bids and hibs fans caused a few sleepless nights. For those who pull politics into it get a life. Hearts fans goes above and beyond to secure the future of the club. This should be applauded whatever your political persuasion.

In fact for those who bring his politics into it it says more about you than him.

Murray himself brought politics into it in the actual book.

If Murray goes on about Labour I have a problem with him.

If he keeps his Labour politics out of Hearts business I’ll

just happily  ignore him.

I read the book and didn't spot that. Unless mentioning he was Labour "brought politics into it" . If party politics made more than 1% of the book I totally missed it.

Why  would you ignore him in your second scenario? Even if you ignored him on your first, however irrelevant as far as his book is concerned?

I try and ignore anything Murray goes on about. Sorry but when the insults and attacks my fellow Scots I just can’t stand the guy.

Hearts as a club try hard to represent every person no matter their race, religion or politics.

Every fan has different opinions re life, politics, religion etc

We have a common interest in our club and he is part of our club..indeed he has made a fantastic contribution to it's survival.

I try to separate my 'life' views from football and enjoy life on a Saturday with my fellow fans

I've yet to hear Ian Murray berate his fellow fans regarding his club and like many political figures before him he's welcome in our 'church'

There have been Tory politicians, Nationalist politicians, Liberal politicians and Labour politicians who are or have been fans of our club and long may that continue

I picked up on a couple of things. It's not 79.9% of shares that will be handed over to FOH. It is only 75.1%. He also refers to Halifax taking over Bank of Scotland.  It was actually a merger on a share for share basis in the two companies becoming shares in HBOS.

Having known Ian as a Councillor and MP for about 15 years I admit to being biased but having just finished the book I can honestly say i thoroughly enjoyed it.

For me the 'take away' was the 'trivial' things that nearly derailed the whole process - in some way its a 'life lesson'

Anyhow the issues i spotted were [in chronological order]

1. the player with most appearances for the club spells his name Mackay; not McKay  - bit unfortunate.

2. when i sat in the row behind Ian [and his brother] in the Wheatfield Section G - I was in row 23, he said his seat was in Row 11 - he might have moved seats however .

3. the commentator at the Relegation Party game was Derek Rae - not Ian Crocker.

None of these destroy an excellent read.

Islington contains more millionaires per head and far more houses in the multi-million pound bracket than Edinburgh Pentland, contains areas that make Morningside look positively deprived, and returns two Labour MPs with thumping majorities. Edinburgh Pentland is not just Morningside and similar "wealthy" enclaves.

Not clear what your last sentence means.

Not important but thought I would point out that as far as the UK parliament is concerned there is no Edinburgh Pentland it is purely a Scottish Parliament seat and has been SNP controlled for nearly 10 years.

Ian Murray's UK constituency is Edinburgh South.

Not looking for an argument.

Near the end. The bit we were discussing earlier on this thread about people supposedly writing to the club saying they'd cancel FoH pledges unless he resigns. Yet even though he said he had the emails/letters and had verified they were genuine pledgers he didn't say how many, which is strange and suggests it was a tiny number. He also, from what I could see, completely failed to mention Salmond's last ditch intervention which was all over the papers at the time.

Standing for the Deputy Leader of Labour. Fair play to him, will probably get beaten by some Corbynite  like Long-Baileys flatmate.

It might well have been a tiny number but for every one person who acts there will be a proportional number who sympathise with that view.

Whatever the actual number, IM would have to take into consideration if his involvement was going to be a positive or a negative.

IMO it’s good to see a politician with some sort of self awareness.

Good man, Ian.

A couple of years below me at same school.  Good, down to earth Hearts supporting Labour man from Wester Hailes. There’s many like him.

I can separate a man's politics and religion from the football club he supports provided he does not bring the first two into the latter.

As a jambo. Ian does fine by me.

My MP is a staunch Livi supporter,  it matters not a jot.

The statement I questioned was that "Ian Murray depends on nationalist votes just as much as any SNP MP" or words to that that effect.  So interpreting it myself, agenda-free, I can only assume yoiu think all Murray's voters were British nationalists and by extension all non-SNP (and non-Green) voters in Scotland are British nationalists. Hard though it must be for some SNP supporters to accept, for many people there are other issues than nationalism, of any sort.

It's common knowledge that in the current political environment in Scotland, Murray relies on tactical "anyone but the SNP" votes for his seat. Yes, there are other issues for voters. Murray's constituency for example voted Remain by a huge margin, so surely they would vote with the anti-Brexit party? Yet they voted for pro-Brexit Labour. Read any analysis of his seat and you'll see political commentators acknowledge all this.

A lot of folk in Edinburgh would argue that Halifax took over BoS. 😄

I concur. as I was a BofS employee at that time. A lot of very capable people in key roles were replaced at that time. Too many of those who stepped into the roles were totally our of their collective depths.

The Labour party was hardly the anti-Brexit party. It's policy was to renegotiate and agree  an inevitably softer Brexit and hold a Peoples Vote on that and remain  in which the Labour PM and party leader would be neutral. It was the best bet for stopping Brexit or at the very least greatly reducing the damage of Brexit.

Unless you were the only person other than Jo Swinson who thought she would be PM.

Just got round to finishing the book and was a very good read. Brought back the whole gripping episode of what we all went through back then. We really could and maybe should have went under........the rest is indeed history.

I have been critical of Ann recently like most of us but maybe she deserves a break after everything she has done since first getting on board.

let’s appreciate all the hard work that many put in during that awful period.

spot on. Also finished the book recently and didn't fully appreciate at the time how seriously close we were to folding and all the hard work by numerous people it took to get us over the line. Puts our current difficulties into perspective

I have also just finished this, very good read. Would recommend to all Hearts fans.

Couldn't agree more about Ann after reading the book and I have also been critical recently.

Wonder how many will get this read during the period of lock down!
