Put him alongside Jim MacLean in my time.

Similar unfashionable clubs. Similar in trusting the players to play though MacLean was still hard on them.

I think it's a tough question because the likes of clough and Sir Alex would struggle starting out in the modern game(as in right now) , likewise some managers today would have been laughed out the dressing room 30 years ago.

I must mention Giovanni Trapattoni.

Trapattoni guided Juventus to six Serie A championships, two Coppa Italias and all three major European Cups.

Brian Clough was the manager I knew about. (Jock Stein I knew he was Scotland manager, Shankly didn't know , etc)

But I knew about Brian Clough.

The smith's "frankly my shankly" is loosely based on Shankly according to the old rumours.

Seemingly it is about Rough Trade Founder Geoff Travis.

Right answer

Clough should have retired after the Spurs final. His battle with alcohol was becoming more public and it was very sad to see it playing out in the way it did. He was in a league of his own though.

Both arseholes too.  I think both only won the league once too so probably too much of a stretch to have them both at the top, although as you say they were at unfashionable clubs and winning back to back European Cups at Forest was a tremendous achievement.

That's true. I will always say it was Fergie but in 20 years when I try to say to someone much younger they will probably shrug and say "aye okay".

Clough won the league twice. With two very unfashionable clubs.

Taking Derby County to the EC Semi Final. 😊

Always a daft question this. Players evolve so do managers and coaching. There can only be a greatest manager of each era never a greatest manager of all time.

In my lifetime

80s........ Brian Clough

90s........ Sir Alex Feguson

00s........ Jose Mourinho(might get slated but look at what he won between 2003 and 2010)

"Teenies"....... Pep Guardiola

Folk can shove Jose (a wee bit) and Pep (a big bit) right up their arse in a ‘best manager ever’ thread.

Subjective.  Different eras, different players, budgets, I’ll go for Ferguson. Constantly building new winning teams

Quite. Too many resources to quantify just how good they are.

Tough question to answer in truth

St Mirren Aberdeen and Manchester United. All brought to different levels on different scales

Pep may well have a case in five years or so.  Can't really think of any other candidates from the last few years. Klopp maybe.

No problem - slip of the old finger - although I’m now depressed thinking about that 88 semi.... 🙈

I forgot he won the league with Derby too, although I don’t remember as I was about 4 or 5. Great achievements with both clubs then and won their only titles, although I would argue taking Dundee Utd to the EC Semi Final was a greater achievement than doing it with Derby.  Of course  Clough won the EC twice with Forest too and they must surely be the only European club that have won the EC / CL more times than they have won their domestic title.

Can’t believe you’ve said ‘slip of the old finger’ and ‘semi’ in the same sentence!

I remember taking my young brother to the game for his 14th birthday. We were in the family enclosure to the left of the as then known rangers end. It was mostly Celtic but we were next to the fencing and it wasn't busy.  Didn't care. After the game was some bother. Was gutting to lose the way we did. The Hearts support was excellent to watch. Only the second time in my life I've seen it from outside. Other was QOS in 1981. Goose pimples i was standing almost in line when the big mad looping thump from Roger R.I.P happened

It is.  While Clough’s greatest achievements were probably winning the EC twice, Fergie only winning it twice, despite Utd’s domestic dominance, appears a bit of a failure. Particularly compared to how many times Real and Barca were winning it.
