Union Berlin

Boy in the work is a fan of theirs. Was telling me about this silent protest they had on Saturday. Their first ever game in the German top flight, against Red Bull Leipzig. Seemingly (so I am told) the protest was against Red Bull, and they way they’ve bulldozed their way through the leagues by throwing money at everything. The wiki quote below probably explains it better. The video is worth a wee watch, the fans counting down the last ten seconds of the protest was decent 👍🏼

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how they get on this season. They got battered four zip on Saturday...things can only get better!

EDIT Oops, just realised the video is from their FIRST protest against RB, which took place when both sides were in the German second tier, in 2014 🙄 Wiki even mentions it above ffs 🙃 Anyway, they had another on Saturday 😊

Can I just be the first one to say that thats what Ann Budge wants Tynecastle to be. Maybe add in a bit about a library, facepainting, sweetie rustling... ehhhh... no being allowed to sing the sash, billy boys FTP is killing atmosphere etc. Carry on with Levein and Tynecastle will become that/already is that.

There we go thats it out the road.

Carry on.

Believe it was more the fact RB are so manufactured and not 51% owned by the fans like the majority of clubs in Germany. Redbull own 99% of the shares I think.

This. Friend of mine is a Schalke supporter and he told me that a lot of German football fans of other clubs can’t stand Red Bull for the reason they are manufactured.

They’re protesting about another team having money to spend and being a more successful club?

Do their supports like a heavy dose of socialism by any chance? Pathetic.

I never really minded when it was just me that was the subject of abuse because of what church my mother attended, I was a wee bit miffed when I used to take my boy when he was small, now that we both take my grandson and songs are sung against him, I F****** hate people like you.

I think he was having a go at the people who think these songs are acceptable and create an 'atmosphere' and that if you stop them being sung then you end up with no atmosphere at all.

Very weird. Be like us having a silent protest against Gretna when they came up through the league's

Don't see why they should be getting offended and upset about a completely unrelated team and their success

Union recorded a bigger attendance than their ground capacity as they sold tickets to fans for fellow supporters who had died and never seen their team in the BL. Think it involved something with their photos on the tickets

Quite classy really

" Union Berlin supporters raised tributes of late family and friends who could not be present to witness the club's debut Bundesliga appearance on Sunday.

The "finally there" campaign saw banners created from photos to be held aloft as the club hosted top-flight football for the first time.

The supporters have played an integral part in Union's journey to the top-flight, donating blood as part of a "Bleed for Union" campaign to raise funds for their struggling fourth-tier side in 2004 - as well as volunteering to help rebuild the club's stadium in 2008."

A tribute to deceased fans is a nice gesture, but "selling" tickets to dead fans !!!

Sounds a bit "commercial" to me, the sort of thing they had their protest about

I guess the hate is mainly because it's such a big global brand and seems very artificial.  it's really no different from how gretna ascended the league's or ostersunds in Sweden.

My understanding was that they just added these supporters names to the attendance number, so in effect it was like they were there. don't think they made any profit from it.

The post I quoted said they "sold" extra tickets, but if what you say is correct that is quite a nice idea.

Isn't the point that Gretna, for example, already existed and were then elevated due to finance, rather than a corporate entity (Red Bull) buying a club, changing the name of that club, thus turning it into something completely different?

Yeah, bit of an ICT type scenario there where three local clubs merged to create one.

Yeah - my point was more Red Bull have grown as a result of a huge conglomerate bending german ownership rules as far as they will go, and pumping fortunes in after taking over a 5th tier team, Gretna were albeit ona  smaller scale only where they were because of one man. I'm not aware (and read a bit on the subject, but by no means an expert) aware of Ostersunds doing either of those things? And the Osterunds merger part happened years before they became successful i think?

Yeah, I think you are right regards Ostersunds, so not comparable with RB.

I suppose the Gretna/RB would be more similar if Brooks Mileson had changed Gretna's name to Mileson Rovers (or something).

Or if Vlad had bought Hearts and changed the name to UKIO Edinburgh FC or something.

The point regards the ownership is key to the German fans dislike though I think.

All teams have been manufactured in some way.

In Germany supporters usually own at least 51 per cent of their club with Red Bull this is not the case. I think Hoffenheim are similar to Red Bull in this.

Comparisons with Gretna is a bit off as Leipzig is a large city with a huge football tradition which RB have mopped up to the detriment of Lokomotiv etc whereas Gretna is a small village.

Fan ownership has not prevented Bayern Munich dominating the Bundeslega for the last 10 years , sadly.

Yes merges clubs pooled funds together, linked up with Nike .

Much more organic but greater funds paved the way none the less.

As someone replied above I think the saltiness is because red bull have just done it so commercially. In American sports though it's nothing new.

I don't approve of it but for me it's no worse than the inflated values and wages of English players for example .

Presumably the supporters of Leipzig aren't too bothered.

I googled this. The three ostersunds village clubs merged together in 1996. Ostersunds were in the Swedish 4th tier in 2010. So doesn’t seem like this pooling benefitted them?

There is also very little evidence of them having disproportionately large budgets at any point?

Hardly strikes me as comparable in any way to a 5th tier team being bought by a multi billion conglomerate, name changed, and pouring of millions, all done by changing share ownership values to completely circumvent german ownership rules.

Union are a proper football team.

A great match day experience: Beers on the train to to the Kopenick Station, Outdoor pub outside the station for beers and food, walking through the forest to the stadium with a carry out, no half time music, no music after goals, 4 Euro beers all through the match, constant singing and a great bunch of supporters.

I already noted that red bull is a huge global corporation. At no point did I say it was exactly the same. Merely that to much lesser extents other teams have bought their way to success.

In the case of ostersunds I've done more reading and seems I was under false impression of them. So happy to read otherwise.

Well done on putting your point over by being as much of a dick as possible though. Kickback for arseholes indeed

Missing the point completely on these ones. It's not really as simple as 'they've got more money than us, so we hate them'. Tradition within German football is very strong, so much so that almost every club adheres to the 50+1 rule, where as mentioned, 51% of the club is owned by the fans shares. This is designed so that ultimately, the fans call the shots. Red Bull bought the licence back in 2009 of Markenstadt and just flooded the cash in from there. They do still have a philosophy in place however. Rather than just spend silly money on any old shite like your usual rich clubs, they have a policy of only signing players under the age of 24. Still though, that's not the done thing in Germany to have a football club who are fully funded by a corporation, and because of this, everyone in Germany hates them. The city of Leipzig deserved to have at least one successful football team, but there are a few well supported, far more historic clubs already, namely Lokomotiv.

German fans are fighting tooth and nail every year to make sure that football still belongs to the fans. They don't want the Bundesliga to go like La Liga or EPL and become a sort of billionaires playground that disappears up it's own arse. Plus, this was a sort of East German derby if you will too, so added heat in this match, at least from an Union point of view.

RB is easily the most hated, but uber traditional fans also dislike Wolfsburg, Bayer and Hoffenheim for the same reasons.

In fairness, Wolfsburg and Bayer have become long established clubs, but Wolfsburg are funded by Volkswagen, and Leverkusen are, well, the clue's in the name Bayer. Hoffenheim pretty much done what Leipzig have done, albeit TSG were already a club before SAP bought into them. The club play in Sinsheim, as Hoffenheim itself is a village of 3,000 people.
