Yeah it's a weird statement. Young players won't often be loaned to a higher level will they! Loads of players have loans successful and otherwise, come back having learnt a bit about football and life and kick on. Loads and loads. We've not done well enough but our academy is still really in its infancy.
77Mackay77
Robbie Nielsen talked about the issue of young players becoming good enough to start being involved in the first team squad and then there development stalling and their career going backwards. He talked about how they developed through training away from the first team but then got into the first team squad and with matches, tactics meeting/session for the upcoming game and rest days etc their actual amount of time spent training would significantly drop and their development stalled. So so basically how they trained as youth helped them be good enough to get into the first team squad and then the first thing that happens is you change how they train. I always thought it was a very good and interesting point on how to better manage the transition from young prospect to first team squad to first team regular. So and so was playing every week at 17, so why can't thingummybob. It's pointless. That 17 yearold may end up Danny Galbraith and the other end up Harry Kane. That's why the best scouts/managers are able to judge slightly better than anyone else where players are at in their development and how much room for growth there is. If you take 2 players at 16/17, watch them in a game and there's little between them, the very best scouts/managers will be able to spot the one that's 75% of the player he will ever be and the other that's only at 30/40% of the player they can become. Stephen Simmons would have been at about 90% of his best whilst still 16/17, that's why he stood out in youth football. Davie Weir would have been lucky to be at 5/10% of his best at 16. Of course loans work but in that context then it definitely is a worrying sign. If you've made the breakthrough you really shouldn't be then loaned out. I wish instead of signing the likes of Whelan, Damour and Meshino we'd given Cochrane, MacDonald and Irving more chance to fill those positions. I know Cochrane in particular had big injury problems, but no-one would have blamed us for throwing youngsters in and persisting with them when we had such a big injury list.
