Pub Name late 1980's 1990's

The pub directly opposite the Odeon Cinema in South Clerk Street, once known as The Old Vic' but what was it called after that.

Infamous Landlady Maggie Rae ran the pub and famously draped her underwear on the Pie Oven.

Currently the Dog House before that the Ale House before that McEwan's Ale House and before that the Old Vic

Stuart?

Was the Dog House not McSorleys before, or have I got the wrong premises?

Think you're thinking of somewhere else mate. It's been the dog house for 6 or 7 years now I'd say. Before that I couldn't remember the name, but it was just a more traditional pub for as long as I remember.

Ok, thanks L.

Place I’m thinking of was sort of opposite the Odeon, along from the wee Malaysian restaurant called Kampong Ali.  It was definitely called McSorleys as recently as three years ago, so I’ve obviously got the wrong location.

Thanks.

Looks like it was McSorley's (18-22 Clerk Street, Doghouse is 18-24 Clerk Street)

The only McSorley's I've ever known is up Forrest Road, so not far. Been open a few years now.

Yeah, I know that one too.  Opposite Sandy Bells?

There was definitely two McSorleys at one point though.

I find myself utterly unsurprised at this news.

That’s either a compliment or an insult.

Think I’ll toss.

It seems as though you're spot on Morgan. Found pictures of it on Google and everything.

My dad has lived in Buccleuch Street for 22 years and can't say I ever noticed it. Love that area but probably don't go enough to notice some things like that.

It mustn't have been there very long at all.

:oohmatron:

It comes from the song (to the tune of Jambalya)

"Don't be shy

Show's yer pie

Gie's a gobble

For tonight I'm gonna sh46 something awful..."

It's the lady's 'pie' and, in the right mood, it gets warm, a bit like an oven.

Hence, the dunghammocks being 'draped on the pie oven' is a phrase to say, merely, that the lady sported underwear.

doghouse still tied to another pub down Leith way, will find out its name as my boy Is friendly with the landlady

Doghouse has a tie in or same owner as the Mousetrap at 180 Leith Walk, so its not the same pub mentioned in the Scotsman article on Baltic St

Whatever it's called it's next door to the fantastic Tanjore restaurant.

Authentic South Indian dishes and BYOB!

That’s it Serge!

Tanjore is brilliant, you’re quite right.

They had to drop McEwans because a couple bought the rights to the name, Heineken wanted to stop making McEwans 70/-&80/- because they have to pay for the privilege of using the name. It’s also why McCowans is called that and not McEwans.

Same owner I believe, staff flit between the two. Doghouse and Mousetrap are good.

It was owned by S&N when it was called the McEwans Alehouse, then the Alehouse but not sure when it was sold. Heineken bought  S&N 5-10 years ago.

Never knew about the McSorely's name or Hiccups for that matter.  Thanks for that I'll add it to the mix.

Was definitely both ... hiccups had a really good sunday maybury league team. It wasn't mcsorleys for that long and didn't seem to bother much with live music

I could strap on the pink bow tie (which sounds like a euphemism in itself) and rejuvenate this masterpiece.
