Ridiculous. Ben Stokes. One of the most clutch performances I've ever seen in any sport. Barely even human.

Well played Ben Stokes.

Not a knee jerk reaction but Tim Payne should resign captaincy or else be booted out of side for horrendous decision to review LBW against Leach when ball pitched about 6 inches outside leg stump. That appeal cost as they would have won with LBW against Stokes next over.

Not a knee jerk reaction but the umpire again rules Not Out when the ball was hitting middle and off. It wasn't even close but rather a prime example of an umpire being totally incompetent and out of his depth.

Nathan Lyon and Harris will have nightmares over their incompetence in dropping run out chance and catch, but for me, they come after Payne and umpire in blame game.

Equally, the umpire who didn’t give that lbw against Stokes needs sacked. That’s a shocking decision

That was the best sport I've witnessed in years. I'm completely done watching it - christ knows how Stokes must be feeling! Incredible knock!!

Amazing 10th wicket partnership with Jack Leach. 76 runs and Leach was 1*
The 4,6,6,2,1 off Hazlewood to bring it down to about 20 was incredible.

Incredible, never seen anything like it in test cricket.

That review was near the end was crazy.

Watching last few overs again now and it still makes me feel nervous.

Unbelievable scenes!

Sets up the last 2 Tests nicely

It does.

It's been a good contest and continues now. Aussie win would have ended it.

Steve Smith back. Jofra Archer. Both sides can improve their batting.

Classic sport.

So enjoy watching england fall on their faces.

but watching the highlights without an inkling of what the score ended.

I found myself willing stokes to it, absolutely incredible drama.

I thought the final was unbelievable, but this was up another notch.

Joe Root went into this innings to save his position as captain.

But that is England's next captain announced today.

Stokes doesn’t need the captaincy, would put more pressure on him at this point.

What england need is a replacement for Roy and for Root to drop to four.

just the time a seies lasts puts people off.

I record Channel 5 highlights and avoid the score.**

(** as much as possible, the 67 all out was announced on the news before I could reach the remote  )

The last two matches have belonged to steve smith, then stokes in the 2nd.

I'll have to watch that last period again, with one wicket remaining. incredidle stuff.

76 runs, 1 for Leach   10.2 overs

What an absolute lot of nonsense. It has its moments. It is not even close in the top sports stakes. Go away man.

my sons both play cricket.

The super over in the WC final was incredibly tense.

Then that Stokes stand to win was utterly gripping!

Never watched cricket before as suspected it was boring- but that was electric

Also Joel Wilson shat it. Horrific decision.

Michael Vaughn said that Wilson in the circumstances should have given him out  not only on the basis it was hitting leg stump but it would have allowed England the use of the review and the correct decision would have been made.

Only if DRS is right. I thought it was going down leg side in real time as do others. Was going fast in real time.

Sorry, but as good an innings as Stokes played, he is totally talking bollocks here. Joel Wilson shat himself big time with as big a bottle job as you will ever see. It was going nowhere other than straight onto middle and leg stump. Batsmen always claim to be unaware of what they nick or miss so he is stretching belief to say that.

Anyone who claims otherwise is simply trying to cover up a totally unacceptable mistake by an umpire who would be out his depth in a paddling pool.

If it is the case, which it never was, then DRS would need to be pulled with immediate effect as it could never be trusted again. You are placing belief in an umpire who has made mistake after mistake in three test matches and disregard a computer system that has been reliable and accepted for years.

Yeah, me too. I'm not usually a fan of England in team sports, but sitting there watching that, you felt you were watching something special, and it was a spectacular result. That reverse sweep for 6 was just superb. The Gods of cricket were certainly smiling on England with the missed catch, failed stumping and waste of a review, but that just added to the drama. Good on them.

Root needs to drop to 4 and Roy is never in his life, an opening Batsman.

You are so right it's almost frightening.  Roy is a very good limited overs player but he's no more a test opener than I am.

What are they thinking of.  There's an opener called Pope who is scoring for fun.  Stick him in.

And Stokes performance with the ball and with the bat in particular was truly fantastic.  Real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

Pope is a very good player indeed but it could be a case of **** the Pope if he fails.

For sure, he can't do any worse than Roy.

I would also drop Buttler, take the gloves away from Bairstow and bring in Ben Foakes to keep wicket. He is probably the best gloveman in world cricket and as Old Trafford has a reputation for being a Bunsen, his technical skills will be better than Iron Gloves.

Thoughts ?

Would have done these things if they had lost. All good suggestions.

Anderson for Woakes. Think Denly will keep his place and could swap positions with Roy or Root. But probably best to bring in Sibley and/or Pope.

Current side has enough to beat Australia. Jofra Archer is the man to win it.

I agree. Good points about Anderson and Denly, who will probably open.

Archer will target them and with the break between tests, he has time to rest.

The selectors are very loyal so probably minimal changes.

Momentum is with England and, weather permitting, I expect them to win.

Then onto The Oval where I saw the great Australian side of the 70s with Tommo, Lillee, Rod Marsh, Max Walker.

England had APE Knott who was my hero back then, and Boycott, who was a soor faced twat.

It was my first ever Test Match. My Pops worked in Clapham for a few years and his secretary (male) was a member of Surrey CCC and he got us tickets. That started my love for the sport.

Archer v Smith. I can see Smith showing why he's the best Batsman ever.
