You sound very bitter. An England win will be great for the series.

Archer is scaring the shit out of me and I'm 400 miles away.

Agreed!!! I've been hit a few times from bowlers many, many mph below Archer's pace .... it hurts! I've stood next to a cricket net with a bowling machine firing at 90 mph and honestly no idea how you can react in time to duck, let alone play a shot 🙂

Just can’t be dealing with Chris Evans and that Vasos Alexander chump when England win. They are just like the fickle fans when they do bad and slate them.

Draw in the bag now so need not worry myself.

Still plenty overs left. Couple of quick wickets and the Aussies could start to get pretty shaky.

This could go in the "Things you've always wondered about ..." thread but it's a specialist interest.

I get that in the UK we will have the score as 59-3 ie 58 runs for 3 wickets. In Aus they always say 3-59 ie 3 wickets for 59 runs. Ok vive la difference.
BUT
The Sky graphic has the score as 58-3 BUT the bowler stat is Leach 1-2 ie the Aussie way round.
Just settle on a system and ****ing stick to it!

Don't think they have it the other way in Australia. It's standard for the scores to be shown exactly as you have described for batting team and bowler.

Edit: seems they do have it the other way round elsewhere. Never knew that.

Why would Paine play that shot when they are looking to survive.

Superb stuff. Great defensive display from The Aussies. As someone stated earlier however, that was never a catch by Joe Root in a million years.

I know that England are one test down and that they were desperate to win this one at Lords, but FF's, Joe Roots behaviour in claiming that catch was shocking. He knows he never caught it cleanly and to stand up with finger up showing the umpires that he had was nothing short of cheating.

Good to see Michael Holding calling him out after the game whilst the rest of the pundits were squirming around trying to avoid calling it as it should have been said. Will be interesting if any fall out from this or if cricket media sweep this example of cheating under the carpet. It

Momentum with England. Thanks to Jofra Archer. Also the World Cup hangover starting to lift with Stokes, Bairstow and even Butler returning to form. Though Warner hasn't.

I am sorry for Steve Smith. He is brilliant. Though the team doing the short ball barrage were Australia. And he got himself in a mess both times he was hit due to his all moving stance. Hopefully back playing soon.

Archer comes across laid back and friendly. But he is brutal and despite what he said is looking to hit batsmen.

Root also sending another message to the win at all costs Aussies that England are now the same.

England started as favourites and look it now.

So can we expect Headingley crowd to boo Root as he is just as much a cheat as Smith, Warner and Bancroft or can we expect double standards from a boorish crowd and media.

Archer actually had mediocre return from match and once he is over-bowled by a poor captain, he will be unlikely to last.

Question on is do England prepare wicket that suits him because if so, it suits Cummings and possibly Starc. As for Aussies, they need to improve use of DRS because it cost them big time in this one. Stokes would have been out for 6 if umpires had a clue or Australia had better understanding of reviews.

They just did sweep it under the carpet. Not a word about it on the cricket debate, Unbelievable.

Root's catch was given out by the umpires and upheld by DRS, I can't see Root greeting at a press conference about it

Mediocrre? Archer took 5 wickets in the match and a lot of the talking points. Only Cummings (from either side) took more.

Both batting line ups look vulnerable (bar Smith) and the bowling attacks are well matched. England having a marginal advantage that their all rounders give them an extra front line bowler. No idea what will happen at Headingly but looking forward to it already.

Interesting to hear that Steve Smith will miss the remainder of the match through concussion. Australia can now apply for a substitute and the substitute can bat.

I'd listened to the TMS podcast this morning and thought they'd said that a concussion meant the player automatically misses the next match. I may have picked that up worng though. If Smith misses the next match that would be huge!

He should miss the next match because there is a minimum 5 day period players are meant to not play after an incident. That is the medical advice. In Scottish football it is 6 days. Australia doesn't apply that guideline while saying their protocols are first class.

The Aussies are looking to be playing fast and loose. Even sending him out again. And what if he gets hit again on Thursday? Jordan Archer will certainly be aiming towards his head. Smith is competitive and will want to play. But they know that without him they would be 2-0 down in this series.

Will probably be a big debate in Australia next few days. Even more of a debate if he comes to serious harm next game.

Interesting article here Mikey especially relevant as it involves Australia coach Justin Langer and a previosu concussion incident he was involved in himself back in his playing days

Interesting, thanks for posting.

I am concerned for Smith and what could happen. The other benefit in him missing this week's game is it gives him 2 weeks to practice against 96 mph short fast bowling (they have a bowling machine). Because despite being the best player in the world he is vulnerable to Archer's pace with his technique where he is only ever still when he hits the ball.

I didn't want to link this to the allegation Joe Root cheated saying he made that catch (he might have). But this is a different level of wanting to win putting someone's life at risk to win the Ashes.

After what happened to Phil Hughes there should be no debate. He should miss the next test and it should be compulsory for all batters to wear the neck guard at the rear of the helmet. He was hit very close to the same part of the neck as Hughes and it could have easily had the same tragic outcome.

Smith says it's uncomfortable. Well tough shit mate. Get used to it. It could save your life.

Smith is out of the Headingly test

Doesn't seem quite long enough does it!

I read a piece on reaction times in cricket many years ago and one of the points made was not just the reaction time but the fact that elite batsmen pick up on clues so much quicker than average batsmen in order to take advantage of that 0.459 seconds. That's why so many of the commentators on Joffra Archer's action talk about the quicker ball seeming to come from nowhere, he doesn't seem to do anything different between an 85 mph and 95 mph delivery .... and that's what makes him just quite so difficult to play.

Add to all of the above the fact that he delivers the ball from very close to the stumps and nips the short pitched balls back into the batsman giving them nowhere to go.

He will go through them like a dose of salts and to my mind the series momentum has swung in England's favour.

Yer missing the fact, England aren't batting very well, themselves.

I expect the Aussies to adapt quickly to Archer, or they could take a leaf out of his book and hit him with the baw.

England bowl in overcast conditions.

Have to make it count today.

Australia only need 1 more win to win the Ashes.

England take advantage of the conditions on Day 1 especially the dodgy light. Aussies all out for 179 which included a 111 run stand at not far off a run a ball for big chunks of it.

As Boycott says, wait until both sides have batted before passing too much judgement on this innings. From the first 2 Tests England batting has been just as vulnerable as Australia and only Smith has really made the difference. 17.1 overs for Archer, which is a lot. It helped I guess that there were quite a few interruptions between rain breaks, lunch and tea.

Warm and cloudy is the forecast at Headingley today, so the Aussies may get the ball to move about a bit.

England will want to get at least 300 but, as has been mentioned, their batting has been just as fragile.

Root, on his home patch, needs to score.  Moving Bairstow up the order is a statement of intent too.

I reckon England would be delighted to get near 300.

Should be another brilliant days cricket

Is a silver duck a thing? Maybe it should be.

Apparantly so, heard it on TMS recently. There's meant to be others too but I never heard of them in club cricket
Diamond duck - dismissed without facing a ball ie non striker probably run out

Royal duck - dismissed first ball of an innings
