Surely their are some right arm off spinners in the country. Expect a greentop for Archer but that also suits the Aussies. Jonno, listening to TMS on the road up to Pittodrie all the chat was about How do you Solve a Problem like Steven Smith? Turned out that his greatest foes were actually part time pie bowlers. In terms of how prolific he is against different syles of bowlers the only one that was "normal" was left arm spinners. I think you have your answer there! It was Dean Elgar, S Africa's opening batsman and very occasional left arm slow. He has taken just 14 wickets in his 56 Test match career ... 2 of them were Smith! It probably provoked the cheating ****er to resort to sandpaper 😂
Mikey1874
Raining so we don't know the teams yet. Forecast isn't good for today. Meantime a bit of a mention. If you follow BBC cricket text or listen to the radio you might know their main statistician Andy Zaltzman. He was on a lot during the World Cup. Always really interesting stats. Anyway he's also a stand up comic and is here at the Fringe. 4.30pm Stand 3, York Place. I saw him last year but didn't realise. He's quite good, really sharp. Show this year takes audience suggestions to comment on. Quite left wing, anti Brexit if that makes any difference. He certainly thinks the sandpaper 3 were singled out a bit much. Says he might do a cricket show next year.

RobboM
This is real cricket statto stuff but I share with you ..... With the whole of the 1st day washed out the match is now officially a 4 day match. So what? One wee quirk is that the "follow on" rule changes. For a 5 day game the follow on is 200 runs but for a 3 or 4 day game it is 150 runs. Btw if the game had got underway and it had been, say, the 2nd or 3rd day that had been washed out the game would NOT be considered a 4 day game. So when England enforce the follow on with Aussies 160 runs adrift after the 1st innings and all your friends, work colleagues and family are left scratching their heads and wailing in confusion, certain in the knowledge that Test matches have a 200 run follow on, you can step forward and explain all, thanks to Kickback 👍

robbo1874
Roy just doesn't look like an opening batsman to me. He just doesn't leave enough alone outside off stump. A basic requirement for any opener.
Sexton Hardcastle
Thought football fans were fickle/moaning *******s but English cricket is different level. Playing poor on World Cup: get them all to ****, why is Root captain etc Win World Cup: always knew root was the man, what a team, best in the world Opening days of first test: 5-0, easy street Now they’ve shat it: GTF, never good enough, sack them all. And repeat on a four monthly cycle when they win/lose a test match.

Yes And also guys like Butler were brought into the test team but now out of form. Stokes and Woakes are more reliable, steadier. It isn't obvious. They could bring in Sidley for Roy to join Burns to open. Ben Foakes can come in as wicket keeper. Sam Curran I say should be in. Reliable batter as well as bowler. Spinner is currently a problem due to loss of form and injury. Sibley Burns Root Stokes Foakes Bairstow / Butler Curran Moeen Woakes Archer Broad Though not much different from current team. RobboM
Think the tumble of wickets has just about caught up the lost day. England will regret not using DRS against Bancroft for a caught behind. Apart from the wicket (of course) it would have brought Steve Smith to the wicket for an awkward half dozen overs. robbo1874
It'll be interesting to see how the pitch plays with the sun on it today. Will it flatten out or will they uneven bounce get worse? RobboM
Interesting to hear that Steve Smith will miss the remainder of the match through concussion. Australia can now apply for a substitute and the substitute can bat. I'd listened to the TMS podcast this morning and thought they'd said that a concussion meant the player automatically misses the next match. I may have picked that up worng though. If Smith misses the next match that would be huge!
