First car, best car, worst car?

1st car: G Reg Metro GTA, blue. obviously as a first car delighted with it. Also had way less issues (although some expensive ones) than a few cars since...

Best; probably M Reg Laguna (red) 2.0 RT. Went like shit off a shiny shovel... Was like driving your favourite armchair. Really economical too. Livingston to Glasgow, enter M8 at Bathgate, blink.. arrive Glasgow... Loads of useful cubby holes too. Renault done a good interior back then. Unfortunately gearbox packed in at Strathclyde/Hamilton/M74 roundabout, middle lane, sunday afternoon, going home after leaving the TA unit I was with at the time. Gutted twice over.

Worst: **** me I've had some shit cars. For worst I'd have to say most disappointing (my crap cars have all been crap and I knew what I was getting into so not altogether unexpected..) 2005 ford Mondeo 2.0 tdci ghia. I bought it in good faith but the dual mass flywheel and starter motor (commonly linked problem) went within weeks,.. Turbo stopped working and couldn't get it fixed as too expensive (student problems).. When it went right, it *** went right! however spent most of the year I had it in get home mode with a knackered turbo. The one thing I've always said about fords is that do great interiors. It was a lovely place to drive from but, performance also helps.. Hugely disappointing.

I’ve only ever owned 3 cars in 32 years of driving and had the same one for the last 18.

1st & worst car: Acquired from my dad at a big discount in 1990 : Ford Sierra 2.0GL. A bit heavy on fuel and a poor handler. Was already burning oil by then. Smooth to drive though and not too bad if you drove it within its limitations. Kept for nearly 5 years and sold on.

2nd car : acquired late 1994:  1989 2.0i  .Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3 saloon. Later discovered this one had been clocked back 40,000 miles. Still an excellent car and very good on motorways. I did 4 long trips across Europe in it - twice to Warsaw and also Vienna and Munich. Still in good nick when I got rid after 6/7 years but with a huge mileage. Very Spartan inside.

3rd, current and best car: 1994=Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3 2.0i saloon. It’s metallic maroon. Bought in Spring 2001 because I liked the previous one so much,  it had a low mileage and decent nick Cavaliers were getting rarer by then. It’s now over 25 years old and still tremendously reliable. Dirt cheap to run. The bodywork’s held up well too and I’ve recently had it undersealed. I drive it to work every working day. Spares are getting harder to get but far from impossible with eBay. Most years it sails through its MoT with no work required. I had to get a new fuel tank for it 10 years ago and that’s about the most serious item.

3/4 million Cavalier Mk 3s were sold in the U.K. yet under 2,000 are still running. I see no need to get a flash new car. All they do is cost a fortune in depreciation while they sit in garages and driveways. Best to get one good one, look after it and keep it longer, though I know I’m quite an extreme example!

1st Car...Ford Sierra, a guy knocked on my door once asking if I wanted to sell it for £500, as it had been lying in my space for ages not moving (it couldn’t). I said No, but he said wanted to look at it and he might offer more. I ended up selling it to him for £300…WTF!!! (it had flowers growing out the floor😂)

Worst Car… The Ford Sierra above

Best Car…Range Rover Sport, black with beautiful white leather, drove like a dream, brilliant comfort, but spent all my time driving from petrol station to petrol station (guzzled the stuff☹️)

First Car: MK2 Ford Escort 1.3L bought it for £500, it was a bit of a heap, ended up scraping it when it failed it's MOT.

Best Car: Current Car Audi Q7 4.2 TDI S-Line, Big Beast, Fast, only downside is the running costs and it's getting a bit long in the tooth as it's 10 years old. Saying that I had a Peugeot 106 GTI which I loved to drive, it was a wee pocket rocket and handled like a go kart the chassis was that stiff. It got booted everywhere I went.

Worst Car, MK3 Escort XR3, absolutely garbage, plastic clutch fittings that would jump all the time, rear lights that would fill with water during a good down pour leading to the brake light flashing when you indicated.

First car was a 3.0 Ghia Granada. I was 18 the car cost me £100 and 300 to insure it but I was young and stupid back then.

Worst car would be an Austin Maestro 1.3 terrible terrible car

Best car was a 1978 Datsun 240K Skyline. Absolutely loved this car. If I could get my hands on one again I'd buy it as a project.

That's astonishing! I reckon I get mine changed every year and that's sub 15k.

D'you have minimum tread depth legislation? Bear in mind we could get 3 points on the licence for one tyre under minimum therefore 4 could see you gain 12 points and thus lose your licence. Unlikely, I appreciate, but a legal possibility.

Yeah, there is a min tread law. No idea what it is but my cars are in the garage every 5000 miles for a service so they keep an eye on it for me. Even when i was in the UK i wasn't changing tires that often on my company cars.  Funny thing is that i'd never bought a car before moving here so was clueless on the expenses as everything was covered for me.

There'll be an indicator within the tread that'll show you if it's legal or not.

For what it's worth I get between 25k and 30k out of a tyre. Sadly, they're £200 a corner on mine now which is going to hurt when they need replaced, although it's probably 4/5 years worth of driving for me. That's nothing on the silly prices you were talking about though.

I'm either talking shite and get 'em replaced every other MoT or....ah, hold on...just worked it out

2017 got the Mondeo MoT-ed. 4 new tyres.

2018 changed car, got the new one (Kia Cee'd diesel -- now if ever there's a prize for the stupidest name...) MoT-ed with 4 new tyres. So essentially I have been getting tyres changed each MoT for the last two, but forgot it was different cars

(That's not mine. Mine was even more gorgeous: no tow bar, nicer alloys and a petrol engine.)

Worst - probably my first car. Pug 106. It was just done. Bought it at the end of its life. Done it up enough to get it moving from A to B and through my first year driving.

Best. Hard to say but probably my first fiesta. 2003 5 door 1.4l petrol. Bought it with about 40k on the clock. Ran it to 100k over the course of 3 years and never needed anything major. Just the usual wear. All for the cost of £1500.

Good point. I should have written, "not enough maroon". The Alfa is mighty pretty but its maroon was a bit Umbro/Ukio Bankas from about 10 years ago.

I thought you'd appreciate the maroon and white combination on the Chiron. Does this mean you don't want one for Christmas now?

I had one but had to give it back because it struggles on the speed bumps round our area. A Ford S-Max is much better in that respect, and quite a few other respects, too.

Now, THAT's a smart maroon and my (realistic) dream car of the moment. I'd have that over the Bugatti that Seymour's getting me for Christmas (God! Now I sound ungrateful and he probably won't get it for me.)

That's the exact hue (Monza Red) didn't opt for the red calipers (black) and the rims are 19" diamond cut's

Tempted to re-plate it with a Jambo theme, but would attract too much vermin attention.

Either vermin attention or, whenever I'm in Edinburgh, it would run a risk of being jizzed over.
