Now we're starting to get a look at the players. So far, here's mine.

Zlamal

Smith

Souttar

Halkett

Hickey

McDonald

Clare

Bozanic or Irving

Mulraney

Walker

Washington

Although I believe we'll have a new CM before that. This could work too.

Zlamal

Souttar

Berra

Halkett

Smith

Clare

Bozanic or Irving

Mulraney

Walker

Ikpeazu

Washington

You are assuming Naismith won't play and you may well be right.  If he does though does he replace Boz/Irving in your thinking?

This would be my team, I’d have Clare in as your question mark if we don’t have a new CM by then. Add Haring and Naismith as CM’s when fit then this by far our best team. Irving, McDonald, Clare, Berra, Keena, MacLean and Doyle as subs and we’re in decent shape.

From what little we've seen so far and with Naismith and Haring assumed out injured or not match fit (no idea what Naismith's injury status is now):

4-4-2

Zlamal

Smith Souttar Berra Hickey

Walker Clare ? Mulraney

Washington Uche

4-2-3-1

Zlamal

Smith Souttar Berra Hickey

Clare ?

McDonald Walker Mulraney

Uche

3-5-2

Zlamal

Souttar Berra Halkett

Smith Walker Clare ? Mulraney

Uche Washington

I'd be surprised if Berra is dropped, but Halkett looks like he could deputise if he's still struggling to get back to his pre-injury form. Irving, White and Zanatta could all also push for starting places if they play well in the next couple of games. The ? is Bozanic, Irving, Cochrane or a new midfielder, or even Halkett if we need a more physical DM in place of Haring.

It seems there will be a new midfield player coming.  I would suggest we won't see the best of him, Haring or Naismith until September.

Assuming the new guy is good, I think we will be looking extremely strong then.

I have always said you can judge what kind of season you're going to have by the end of September.  Chronic injuries to many of our best players put paid to that theory last season.

Leading up to then, we must pick up points in some of the tough fixtures and put away the lesser sides.  I'm sure we have the players to do just that.

That would be the team that started our first competitive game of the season v Dundee Utd, I believe that was a Scottish League cup tie, a cup we should be aiming to win, and not a pre season game.

No way uche should be starting games

Impact player at best if were needing a goal

I'd expcect 2 more incomings with Djoum gone and haring out for 2 months

Our defence and forward line possibilities take care of themselves. Haring walks into everyone's midfield when fit. But what an abundance of riches we have in midfield. Walker WILL be immense this season and Mulraney is looking very good. I'm also a Bozanic fan as our tenacious dead ball specialist. McDonald superb last night....Cochrane, Clare , Connor and a newbie.....and Naismith !!!.  The future looks bright.

How many years, have you been saying you can always tell how a season will pan out at the the end of September for? Why are you assuming that Naismith and the new midfielder won’t be up at their best until September?

Many years, and I'm expressing an opinion.  I'm sure if you have a really big think you'll realise that we're all entitled to them.

Don't want to fall out over this but have a think about your post.

Are Burns and Brandon our RB cover for Smith. If so, that could be our new weakest link....assuming jury still out on Bobby.

Burns isn't a right back.

With Hickey and White options and a back 3 option I think Burns and Harry should go on loan. If Brandon is the RB cover then is he injured ?... don't recall any recent game time. Smith is a very important player for us now.

Nothing to fall out about, I was only asking a couple of questions. I would suggest that you don’t know how a Hearts season is going to pan out until the Scottish Cup had begun, at the very earliest. The 2011/12 season had the feeling of total mediocrity until the Scottish Cup run propelled us to glory. In the 1985/86 season, we had only won two games by the end of September. We then went on an incredible run of results after that. The Championship season supports your argument, we’d won the league by the end of September! Like you said, all about opinions.

Bazzas right boot

Bobby

Smith Souttar Berra Hickey. (Halkett / White could easily go in there.

Haring / Bozanic

Jake  new cm walker

Naismith or Clare just now.

Washingston

The thing is, we actually have decent cover in most positions unless it's a long term thing and multiple players.

Different types as well to mix it up. McLean, Uche, MacDonald, Irving

Good man although I would argue that it took us till November to win the championship when we beat Rangers again.😂😂😂😂😂.

Hibs and Rangers supporters must have been absolutely sick as we just ran away with it.

I know it was only the championship but considering where we'd been, it was a stunning achievement.

We play Aberdeen away first game, County at home then Celtic away. That’s a very tough start. I’d like to see us with more bodies in the midfield to make sure we don’t get out numbered. Game was done in the first half last night but it got stuffy 2nd half when we where a man light in midfield.

Bobby

Smith Berra Souttar Hickey

Clare Halkett

Walker MacDonald Mulraney

Washington

Naismith can come in for MacDonald if he’s not carrying an injury. Zanatta is lively enough to claim a place on the bench. Uche has a lot to do as I think MacLean offers more than he does. Cochrane, Irving, White, Brandon, Morrison, Keena all perfect back ups.

2 midfielders coming in would be class but I’d settle for one. Halkett will push Berra out the team IMO.

Remember we've got Ben Garuccio to come back as well, can he play on the right?

For teams like Celtic, Rangers and maybe Aberdeen I'd be happy to see the 3-5-2 I suggested in the OP, hopefully we can go 4-4-2 against most of the others, though.

I genuinely don’t see why people like 442, don’t think it works for us at all. I know this is all about opinions but I didn’t think it worked on Friday and will be hard to break down teams who have 5 in the midfield.

It's mainly two strikers I like seeing. When you have our options in the middle of defence and proper wing backs a 3-5-2 can be a better formation.

I’ve yet to be impressed with Keena from what I have seen so far. Don’t get me wrong, he is still young but McDonald, Cochrane, Hickey and Smith have showed more and are younger.

Levein saying he is looking for another CM, I think this will be as backup. Why not play Walker CM till Naismith is fit, can play mcdonald and Mulraney as wide players, both offer completely different styles, one a winger, one an attacking mid, coupled with Clare\Walker in the middle...

It's all about opinions I guess. You have Uche in your team and Keena has not made your bench. I'd argue Keena is more mobile and a more natural goal scorer and better at getting his head up. And, we stop lumping balls to Uche and play better football. Keena therefore before Uche for me....most of the time.

Keena is a very good finisher.

That's what we need and I think he will get a lot of game time this season when he is fully fit again.

Not sure really, but what I do know is that if we play with regular starters this season like Bozanic, Wighton, Zanatta, Brandon, Keena and McLean we will barely average 1 point per game.

Aye? You "know" that?

How much have you personally see of these players, in the flesh?

You know, with you not going to games and not being interested etc...

Central Midfielders.../ can play 1 of 2 CM slots :

Clare, Naismith, Bozanic , Edwards, McDonald, C Smith, Halkett, Cochrane , Haring , Dickimona , Moore , Irving , Petkov.....there's 13 players.....

I think just one quality midfielder, the best we can afford from Djoum and Olly's wage savings, will be enough.  Edwards, Cochrane and Moore to go out on loan.

I am far more concerned about quality RB cover.

Get the impression he won't be ready for the first game, zero minutes in preseason under his belt. I'm sure he'll force his way in but I was maybe taking the thread title a bit literally. I'm hoping our "best XI" changes every so often with different players hitting form at different times
