Shanks said no
McTears the Glasgow auctioneer have a Sporting Medals & Trophies auction later this month. There are quite a few lots that Brian McGinlay, the former Scottish referee has put up for sale. One in particular caught my eye. SEIKO GOLD PLATED REAL MADRID QUARTZ WRIST WATCH, gifted to referee Brian McGinlay, the round white dial with Roman numerals in black and baton hour markers, also in black, with Real Madrid crest at 3, inner railroad seconds track in black, black hands, 35mm case with 2K00-003, 010392 to the caseback, on a gold plated strap, lacking box and papers. The Seiko wrist watch was gifted to referee Brian McGinlay following the Real Madrid v Borussia match. https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/mctears-gallery1842/catalogue-id-srmct11321/lot-6cb2585a-71df-494c-9a94-aa8200c6a79d Is this normal and do Hearts give gifts to referees after matches? Edit - there is at least one Hearts related item in the auction Edited July 10, 2019 by The Frenchman Returns

scott herbertson
Spectacles would have been a more appropriate gift for McGinlay

Imagine the gifts Celtic and Newco have passed out over the years. Gollum must have a nice watch collection.
1971fozzy
I’d give a few some white sticks and balaclavas. No doubt over the years they were laden with gold, frankincense and myrrh from both arse cheeks. Edited July 10, 2019 by 1971fozzy

Back to 2005
All sounds a bit suspect. Only gift we have given a referee was to David Syme. Free nights accommodation in a small Gorgie apartment. He was surprisingly not very grateful....

Makes todays crop look amazing
SectionDJambo
3 Scottish referees were flung out for accepting gifts from an Italian club, possibly Inter, some years ago. Gordon and Kyle were 2 of them if I recall correctly, who were regarded as top referees wighin Scotland. How McGinley, and others, have since got away with this is very strange. A bent referee probably cheated Dundee United out of a European Cup Final against Roma.

A bent referee probably cheated Dundee United out of a European Cup Final against Roma. From wiki John Robertson Proudfoot Gordon (2 February 1930 – 2000) was a Scottish football referee. He was born in Inverness. Gordon was selected to officiate at the 1978 FIFA World Cup but was suspended later that year by the Scottish FA for improper behaviour. He, along with assistants Rollo Kyle and David McCartney, admitted to receiving gifts from A.C. Milan prior to handling their 1978 UEFA Cup clash with Levski Sofia. The Italians won the match Gordon refereed, the home leg of a second round tie, 3–0.

Shanks said no
The Dundee United v Roma referee was a Frenchman called Vautrot, later came out he had (allegedly) taken a £50k bribe with Roma winning the 2nd leg 3-0 after losing 2-0 at Tannadice. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/jim-mclean-admits-feels-sick-1097937 Edited July 10, 2019 by The Frenchman Returns
