Gretna coming from nowhere to getting to where they did, including the Scottish cup final before imploding was some achievement,

That for me.  I exclude R and C due to their monumenta advantages.   In terms of football played, it's hard to go past the Ferguson era but Gretna was pretty special.

Paying loads more than everyone else to bulldoze their way through the leagues in completely unsustainable fashion. What a fairy tale.

Surprised no one has mentioned Hibernian managing to get invited into the european cup despite finishing 5th in the league

No one's ever going to achieve that again

To then go forward by beating the european super giants  Rot-Weiss Essen  and  Djurgardens , well , what can you say.....

Even played their away game against Djurgardens in Scotland. At the old Muirton Park. They don't boast about that.

First team to put big bright lights on top of pylons deserves to be at the top table in the Pantheon of Great Achievements.

He's a decade older than you. Don't want to name him, mate. He doesn't post on here (or elsewhere) as he thinks we're all aerosols.

Craig Gordons Gloves

I think one of the greatest achievements of Scottish football is, despite the absolute roasters in charge of the game, the fact it's still here and thriving in many ways.  So many organizations would have been dead long ago with the level of incompetence seen at leadership levels.

I'll also go with Dundee United beating Barca in the 80's home and away.  My dad took me to the home leg and to see a wee team from a dying city take apart a team of superstars was quite something.

Something that Rangers couldn't manage with their vast finances.

Not the greatest achievement, but Cowdenbeath, one of the smallest clubs in Scotland, with a dilapidated, crumbling stadium and no playing budget to speak of, managing to stay at Championship level for three successive seasons is an outstanding achievement.

My stepdad swears blind it's East Fife winning the Scottish Cup from the second tier but I'd say Aberdeen's early 80s rampage through Europe myself, that was pretty bloody spectacular for a provincial Scottish team.

Scottish football has had so many lows dragging it down for so many years.

I hope in time we can say the appointment of Steve Clarke. However, I'd say saving our club would be up there. Biggest fan movement and all that. Oldco managing to get to UEFA cup final was an achievement (despite the cheating). Celtic getting to the last 16 of the champions league was significant.

I should be talking about Scotland getting out of the group stages of a major tournament, seeing Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs, not just qualify but go beyond the group stages of the Europa League. The SFA securing a TV deal which allows us to compete effectively in Europe. Watching any of the traditional 'best of the rest' clubs (ourselves, Hibs and Aberdeen) finally breaking the old firm dominance and snagging a league title.

I can't talk about any of that because for various reasons Scottish football isn't succeeding to breed the necessary competition to enable any of that to happen.  To have seen Croatia get to a world cup final despite only being a country since 1991, whilst we've not made a major tournaments GROUP STAGES in over 20 years is beyond embarrassing.

Scottish Football’s greatest achievement? How the game in Scotland has managed to retain supporters and clubs (other than the two cheeks) when those who run Scottish football are institutionally attuned to whatever benefits the two cheeks and the rest of us can go hang. But we choose, instead, to hang in there.
