I am not pro nor am I anti Royalist, as far as the Queen is concerned she personally has ben a part of my whole life. A wee bit different memory than Trump but I remember  her serving in the army as a driver during WW2. When I went into the army in 1952 everything was already about the Coronation, we even had a big parade in Egypt on the occasion. Of course dealt with the fuss around her every year in Edinburgh as a policeman. Even as a polic eman in Canada was involved in security for the Royal Yacht during a visit to Vancouver. Now she is an old lady, I would never start c riticising her now, out of respect  for her age, and the way she has done her what must be tedious duties. Somehow althouh duly elected I find some of the leaders of republic states much more dislikeable, and many filling their pockets in worse ways than the Royal family.

Unelected, pointless and a completely irrelevant old lady who is part of a family simply born into privilege and power.

By definition a dictatorship.

Actual birthday April 21st. Official birthday always the second Saturday in June as promulgated by DCIs(Defence Council Intructions). Trooping the colour takes place. Royal Navy ships not out of routine have to dress ship overall.

There will be another dress ship overall on Monday as June 10th is the birthday of HRH Prince Philips Duke Of Edinburgh. Sometimes the second Saturday in June falls on June the 10th so husband and wife can have a birthday on the same day.

If you start a trolling thread, expect to get posts that don't suit your agenda. Maybe if you had checked when your queen's birthday was before posting you might have got away with it

A Boy Named Crow

I am no supporter of the monarchy, the idea that we should be subservient to not just a monarch, bad enough in itself, but their whole family on the basis of birth is abhorrent.

However, I need to face facts. I live in Australia  now, which means I get a holiday on Monday for the “Queen’s Birthday”...principles only get you so far, so eh, happy birthday ma’am...

For me there is one good thing about the day, I get to watch another spectacle of the Trooping of The Colour. The  purpose may be criticised but the spectacle, the music and the history are something I relish and enjoy. My one for sure life regret was that in 1955, we were the Escort to the Colour. We practised rehearsed, done the final full rehearsal, and just prior to the day it was cancelled because of a rail strike. I watch it now and I could go into one of the guards and carry out the drill it was so deeply ingrained in us. Oh well life is not always fair.

A trolling thread? Absolutely not. A thread to celebrate her majesty and her public birthday celebration is all. If you think I'm trolling it says more about you than me mate.

If you can't appreciate the woman why even open the thread, let alone comment? Take a day off.

We all know fine what happens when you post on the royal family, it's a divisive and emotive subject and people have strong views on the matter. There was zero chance of your post not attracting dissenting voices, you know that, I know that, everyone knows that, you can hardly be all offended when the reaction was completely inevitable.

Born a slave in many ways.

Even if she had abdicated her life would never have been her own.

Dont agree with the whole concept but she has handled her role perfectly it has to be said.

For once I agree fully with your post. Wouldn't want her life in any way and I hope that Scotland does away with the monarchy after independence, but she hasn't put a foot wrong in all her many years

Not really.

Some people think that a constitutional monarchy is a reasonable way to run a country.

It seems to work here fairly well, just like in other countries like Norway, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Denmark, Canada, Australia, Belgium and Sweden.

The alternative?  A president with power like France or the USA or a figurehead like Germany or Ireland.

The problem with a figurehead prez. is that I don’t believe it would ever be a completely disinterested figure - politics would always come into it.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Arguably right here, right now, the UK political system is incredibly broken!

Centuries of inbreeding is bound to have had an effect on her families cognitive ability I suppose. Glad she still gets them round for dinner though.

Fair point. There seems to be an assertion amongst some independence supporter, and I say this as one, that the union somehow forced monarchy on us when in reality we always had our own monarchy until the union of the crowns in the 17th century.

I would like to hope a newly independent Scotland at least has a referendum on the matter and ideally for me, opts not to retain it. Australia etc have though opted to retain but I think what might sway it against the monarchy in Scotland is Charles being king as opposed to wee Liz, who at least tends to be universally respected.

To an extent yes, I agree - but I’m not sure having a President Farage would be the way forward.

Why wouldn't/shouldn't politics come into it? They'd be an elected political figurehead, the way it should be. Not someone who takes a seat in power purely because of who their parents are, which is absolutely absurd in the year 2019. You really think that's a fairer way to run a country? Someone having the power to lord it over everyone without having done a single thing to earn that right?
