To an extent yes, I agree - but I’m not sure having a President Farage would be the way forward.

I'd assume we would have a written constitution with the appropriate checks and balances between the executive, legislature and judiciary properly demarcated.

It also depends how you want that presidency to operate - titular like in Germany, or the executive, as in the USA.

As Ray Gin points out, what qualifies the Queen, other than an accident of birth?

Why wouldn't/shouldn't politics come into it? They'd be an elected political figurehead, the way it should be. Not someone who takes a seat in power purely because of who their parents are, which is absolutely absurd in the year 2019. You really think that's a fairer way to run a country? Someone having the power to lord it over everyone without having done a single thing to earn that right?

It depends on what kind of president you want. Changing to a French or US type would completely turn over our system of government.

As it stands the Queen is just a figurehead and I’m not sure that she lords it over people.

Famously democratic, liberal, social democracies favour constitutional monarchies ( like all the Scandinavian countries for example) and seem to manage fine.

Yes, it depends on the type of presidency you have.  But I think that even a titular president would have a political taint.

What qualifies the Queen?  Nothing other than (as in the case of Norway, New Zealand and Netherlands etc) popular support.

What popular support? I don't recall any ballots on abolishing the monarchy.

Exactly.

Thought I missed the ballot when away on holiday.

And similarly a (admittedly brief) internet search failed to come up with a single poll that was in favour of a change.

The last referendum on this that I remember was when Australia voted and they came out in favour of retaining their monarchy.

The very maintenance of a monarchy is political in itself!

Forelock tugging isn't really my bag.

And just because a majority is happy to do so, doesn't mean it is right.

And you wouldn’t be expected to tug your forelock.

And I agree - otherwise undoubtably we would still have capital punishment in this country (and there’s another favourite  divisive topic!)

I’m not a monarchist freak with the coronation tea towels etc, I just think it works fairly well and I’m happy with it as it is.

If it’s good enough for Scandinavia it’s good enough for me.

Interesting point and valid .

On the evidence I've seen not applicable to the current Queen.

For me there is one good thing about the day, I get to watch another spectacle of the Trooping of The Colour. The  purpose may be criticised but the spectacle, the music and the history are something I relish and enjoy. My one for sure life regret was that in 1955, we were the Escort to the Colour. We practised rehearsed, done the final full rehearsal, and just prior to the day it was cancelled because of a rail strike. I watch it now and I could go into one of the guards and carry out the drill it was so deeply ingrained in us. Oh well life is not always fair.

Actually you wouldn't Bob. The drill has changed. It's Different for the SA80 as it was for the SLR against the Lee Enfield. You'd be surprised how different.

Yes John I still had the old rifle, but watching as I do the Troops and other videos, its no sae hard to pick up, where before the rifle was rested on the ground they do all the Troop for sure pretty much in the same location, they do  change arms while at ease we only used that on the march. Everything else the turns, forms dressing all  the same. During one of my surgeries they opened me and found a Brigade of Guards drill manual, they  must have implanted them at Caterham Guards Depot. All for our beloved Majesty..

Nae stamina you army fellas ?.  Senior service we never changed arms even when marching. I did both the Lord mayor of London's parade and the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. With a SLR bayonet fixed?

How childish. Anyway, I'd rather we treated our Royals like the Russians and French treated theirs, and they got off lightly.

While everybody is happy it’s a democracy we haven’t ever been asked the question do we want them or not, it’d be interesting to see imo.

If they didn’t keep naming hospitals or bridges etc after them would they be relevant? Why do we do that anyway? For instance the new southern general in Glasgow was eventually named The Queen Elizabeth Hospital or something?! Why?

One thing I’m certain of is if it hadn’t been for Diana we’d be rid of them by now. Her and the boys saved them.

Oh I'm no Royalist. IMO the question will not be asked in any of our lifetimes.

The Royal Family are so inconsequential to the vast majority of Britons lives, i don't get the seethe they muster in some folk. I think most wouldn't care if they went, most don't care that they are staying for the foreseeable.

Mob rule  is democratic if there is a majority.  Don't fancy that much.

If you get the chance I'd really recommend this film.  Fantastic satire, and eerily prescient.

I suppose I was meaning if majority is everything then you could end up with some scary legislation.  Probably where Bentham and Mill's utilitarianism comes in.

I really like the film, Peter Cook so on a winner from the off (IMO)!

Agreed, Peter Cook is amazing. Very witty, funny and incredibly bright.

Quantity and quality of pleasure over mere quantity, I prefer that?
