Clark's bar closing down

That's a shame. Fortunately I moved back to Lothian Road office last year.

Sad news about Clark's Bar. I think they were disappointed planning permission wan't given for changes they wanted to make to the original interior and using the shop next door which I believe was purchased as part of their plan to enlarge the pub. The RBS move certainly would 't have helped.

Montys bar. Top class range of ales, whiskeys but zero tolerance to anyone getting a wee bit tipsy. Seems a tad hypocritical to moi.

Back in the day did the Diggers have another side door in Henderson Terrace?

Looking at the side wall on Google streetview, there aren't any obvious signs of alteration.

What made you ask that?

I enjoyed visiting old lying pubs to play pool in early 80s such as.....

Volunteers

Captains Cabin

Waverley

Silver Wing

Diane's

Balfour Bar

Elm Bar

As well as many others. Now since gone or gentrified in Leith , Portobello and the schemes....

Back in the day my mate and I were there regularly after a game and i was sure there was another entrance we used because the bar was that busy it was used to the get the bog.

I mentioned that to him the other day and he said I must have dream it.

I looked at the Google map and I was sure it was were the cellar was.

It's hard getting old🍺😩

By area for me personally

Northfield: The Scottie

Porty : Skylark(very snooty however you do get a gem of a DJ in there sometimes)

Abbeyhill: The Regent

City Centre: The Guildford Arms(incredible range of beer)

Southside: Droothy Neebors

Lothian Road area: Footlights

Leith: Links Tavern(Bottom Shop)

That used to be Alan Anderson's bar the it was called The Falcon.

I thought the Scotch Hop can't remember what it was called before used to be Alan Anderson's pub.

Ah okay I know where you are. No Alan definitely had the Falcon (now Droothys) before he and his wife moved up to Aberdeen.  Obviously he is mostly known for having The Pivot back in the day.

Anyone know why the Haymarket Bar is all boarded up? Have they decided to just close completely in all of this?

Might be for the best if it was, as a busy pub you have to fight to get outside and back in to go for a piss is not acceptable to me.

They need to get access to the toilets back inside or stay shut.  Whoever thought of getting rid of the inside toilet and coming up with that design needs to take a serious look at themselves.

Most pubs are boarded up to help  protect the premises.

Yeah what on earth is that about? Was in it for the first time in years a few months ago and went to go fro a piss where the toilet used to be. Totally weird to go out the first door then up to the loo.

Ah fair enough. Didn't even notice the Balmoral this morning. Saying that, it wasn't even the windows boarded up on the Haymarket Bar, it was the signage. Maybe the letters are made of real gold.

Been in once, the night after Hibs beat us 2-1 at Tynie and Griffiths scored that free kick.

It was a few months before England were due to play Scotland at Wembley for the first time in years, and some English guy was going round telling everyone he was an adopted Scot, and that he was going to go to Wembley in a kilt and 'drag his big black Scottish ****' over all the English. His words, not mine.

The Haymarket has been treading water since the last refurb waiting for the gap site across the road to start up

Staff pretty lazy and pub manky at times .. outside area tables not cleared etc

They even started to show live football again just to boost takings

Hope it goes back to being as good as when Derek had it

I visited the pub last year. It was the first time in about 30 years.

The highlight was a couple shagging in a loo cubicle 😁

Penthouse was my favourite pub for a couple of years. I think it became a lap dancing bar?

I more or or less learned how to pay pool there, in the wee room through the back.

It was owned and ran by, I’m pretty sure, John Logan.

A lot of good Hearts fans drank in there, including the legendary ‘Big Bernie’.

Viceroy was a bit of a dive, good for a fight on a Saturday night!!

The Burnt Post was another haunt.

You should have popped in and said ‘Hi’.

I’d have bought you a pint.  :)

Used to be a regular in Ryries which could be a bit nutty depending on what football was on but a proper old school boozer.

No been for years but the Royal Oak was always a good laugh. Not really into folk music but it was a nice change.

Used to play pool in the bar at the Odeon, Lothian Road, some really good players, a lot of them played for the Ladyfield in Morrison Street.

I was in on the odd occasion late 70s/early 80s, Not my sort of pub really but it had a turn for the better (music wise at least) when big Mark from the Southern Bar took it over via maybe the Bridge Bar? Last I heard of Mark he'd turned into a tranny and was running a boozer in Aberdour wearing dresses and stockings!
