His coach described him as having an 'empty hard-drive' which I read as having no game intelligence and an inability to learn. What Brendan Rodgers did masterfully was take all the tactical elements out of his mind, playing him through the middle and just getting him to run in behind. Alex McLeish's decision to play him wide against Kazakhstan when he has zero tactical discipline was the worst decision he made, in a long list of them. Like it sounds like he's pretty much been called stupid, unable to grasp tactics or any sort of game intelligence. To genuinely be called stupid/lacking not in anger is pretty brutal.
