Soapy Soutar
We need a experienced midfielder who is going to grab tge game by the scruff of the neck and control the midfield..to many games last season we lost the midfield battle and it cost us.It is a huge ask expecting a teenager to boss midfield, hickey is helped hugely by berra and souttar we have nobody in midfield to help a youngster through a match. I would also like to see another striker
Rooster20
I'd agree that another midfielder is not a necessity if we could trust that Haring would stay fully fit. Unfortunately it seems he is under quite an injury cloud and can't be 100% relied upon. Coupled with Lee on the way out this makes me think we need to sign a decent midfielder. Yeah I agree, on another thread I made the point that we may not have access to the most talented of players, but the one thing that is entirely in their control is their physicality (I understand genetics play a role, you can't make yourself taller etc), they can eat right, bulk up via gym work, and do all the things that should put them physically in the same category as top players. Irving tbf at 19 looks like he's doing all of that, but as a general role of thumb, I don't think we should be accepting our players physically speaking settling for 2nd best. Callum Paterson is one of my favourite players we've produced. Not good oodles of natural talent, but he took his physicality seriously and has managed to get a move to a top championship club. Obviously Paterson does have more to his game than just being a big lad, but you can't deny the benefit its brought him and the necessity of it to play at that level. Gavman81
I just don’t think Levein feels we need this playmaking midfielder. We never seem to be interested in signing them and it’s been this way since promotion and Robbies third season - we’ve gone with brawn, effort, hardworking physicality over twinkle toed wee magicians. Nippy - cause it is what’s needed. As ok as Friday was, and that’s all it was - ok, the midfield still looks way short of game controlling quality and against better teams we’ll struggle. I just don't know where we are going to get them within our budget. Like goalscorers they are seldom available at the right price and everybody else wants them too. The twinkle-toed players we did sign like Martin and Swanson did not set Tynecastle alight and they invariably need someone else in the MF to create the platform for them. For example if we had Naisy and Haring in the team on Friday the MF would have much more functional both collectively and individually

I’m not for a second saying that he would have been a game changer BTW but he would have been no worse than the awful football we’ve seen since last October. His treatment of Edwards too was baffling - ignored for a year and then deemed good enough for a cup final? You need a pressing game against Celtic with players prepared and fit enough to keep running/harrying as we did against them when we beat them 4-0 and 1-0. Edwards fits that bill and CL was proved right but you wouldn't be able to see anything CL does in a positive light.
