Playing a team at four grounds in one season

We're due to play Celtic at a fourth venue this season. Have we ever previously played a team at four or more venues in a season?

A good question...did you deliberately wait till the London Hearts servers are down for migration to make it a proper quiz?

No, I didn't even realise. It may be impossible to answer without it.

It’s a cracking question...my guess would be posssibly in the early days when a lot of random stuff seemed to happen as grounds opened and closed, were used for war efforts, etc.

In more recent times, since Hampden became the first pick for all big games,  I can’t think of a circumstance where it would happen.

My instinct would be to check occasions where we have played a ‘smaller’ side in semi finals and before everything was pushed to Hampden.

One possibility is a second replay played at a neutral ground and then another semi-final or final.

I think it could still happen if we played, for example, Hamilton or St. Johnstone, in a League Cup semi-final at Easter Road and then a Cup semi-final or final at Hampden.

St. Mirren changed ground midway through the season. So, one day, might Dundee and/or Dundee United. That could be three league grounds and then a semi-final or final.

We've played Partick Thistle at three venues this season including pre-season friendlies, despite not being in the same league and not requiring a semi-final or final.

Good question!

Short of us playing Real Madrid home and away in the European Cup then meeting them in Buenas Aires in the World Club Championship Final, just before destroying them in the European Super Cup in Monaco, I can’t think of any other examples.

SI thought perhaps St Johnstone last season as we played them in the cup but that was at Tynecastle too so just the 3 grounds including Murrayfield

Tough question!

Tough indeed!

There must be quite a few that cover three grounds.

One that jumped into my mind was the 1975/76 Cup run when we played Montrose home, away and also at Muirton.

Don't think 4 can be equalled or bettered, Montrose in 1976 with 3 venues.

Go further back into the 1950's when Hearts played a few semi finals at Easter Rd and you'll end up with 3 venues.

Man Utd and Man City in the tours could be a contender too.

We potentially could have had 5 last season against either the sheep Or Killie

Murrayfield, Tynecastle and Pittodrie/killie park in the league

Easter road for a LC Semi

Hampden for Scottish Cup Semi/Final

Going forwards we could have the same potential for 5 with Aberdeen if their new stadium was opened part way through the season

There are many examples of three - any season in which we had a semi-final or final against a team in our league.

We've played Rangers and St. Mirren at five grounds each in the last 35 years but never more than three in one season.

Dunfermline at East End Park.

I think it will be quite common in England. Semi-final and replay at two different venues, plus league matches.

Celtic Park was being used that season - so we played Rangers at 3 different grounds

Been thinking about this and can only come up with a lot of 3 venues against teams. Unless proven otherwise think this will be the first ever for us

If there is a precedent I think it will involve Hibs and grounds like St.Bernard’s and others. Long ago.

We were all over them IIRC. Sure their goal was a deflected effort.

Manchester United 1959/60 overseas tour.

4 different venues.

Played Australia 6 times in the 1958/59 overseas tour, only 2 out of the 6 were played at the same venue so 5 venues for that tour.

Manchester City 1957/58 overseas tour. 4 different venues.

Cheers London Hearts

In 1887-88, we played St Mirren at 4 different grounds in the Scottish Cup due to 3 replays:

Even back then Levein was getting us beat of Diddy teams.

Back in the halcyon days Fountain Amateurs played the same outfit at several different grounds at saughton park.

Can't remember who they were though.
