Awful. Reports are suggesting it was started by an accident during ongoing work on the building (there's quite a lot of scaffolding around the structure).

I hope it was an accident. Shocking tho. Tragic, 1000 years old.

It's going to be gutted by the looks of it.

Well it's certainly not going to be happy.

Visited Notre Dame many times and it's probably the most amazing and iconic building in Europe ( Sagrada familia in Barcelona runs it close). This is a devastating loss, i sincerely hope they can save the main towers....gutted?

No need, this is not the time to make jokes IMO, 100’s of years of history lost forever

It’s a building not a person. 99% of buildings built no longer exist. That’s a lot of hand wringing to be done.

I'm not bothered by the original joke.  But this post is a shocker.  I'd love to know which parts of your culture you find important.

Donny in the shite house says they should use water tanker aircraft to put it out.

He obviously doesn't realise that a hundred tons of water hitting a fragile, burned, 12th century stone wall all at once will simply knock the whole thing down.

Man's a complete moron.

Didn't know you were from Paris. Wait a minute and I’ll nip on to Facebook and change my avatar to a tricolour in sympathy.

Why is there a “Pray for Paris” thing going on?

The cultural to the world most certainly and I suppose to Paris economic aspect of it is tragic but not a Pray for Paris hashtag!

There was a French lad on sky news said it burned with an end of the world yellow as the iron spire fell (I know it wasn’t an iron spire)

They are saying they aren’t sure they can stop it spreading to the second tower. Hopefully they manage. Such an iconic beautiful building. The spire falling is up there with the WTC collapse if not more iconic. They have also said the internal part of the Cathedral is all alight and nothing in their opinion will be saved.

You would think the **** would know about walls. He talks about them a lot.

Very sad day for France and hopefully the stone structure survives.
