Not going to lie, as soon as the music starts the chills were there.

Even despite being a bit disheartened by TLJ.

I play galaxy of heroes and all the gim... I mean fans are getting rather moist over it :)

Personally, I'll wait on the film before watching any of it.

Considering Iain McDiarmid walked out once the trailer was shown I think it's safe to say it's Palpatine...

Star Wars - Redefined blockbuster films.

The Empire Strikes Back - Best Star wars film ever made (ironically Lucas was off making Indiana Jones with Spielberg at this time).

Return of the Jedi - Decent end to the original story. Suffered from following the standard set by ESB.

Caravan of Courage and Battle For Endor - Two terrible kid's films featuring the Ewoks. And some kids. Absolute garbage.

The Phantom Menace - Ignored Star War's own canon, both in previous films and in twenty years of other media, which had previously all been given the nod by Lucas himself as official canon. Tried to retcon the entire franchise and proved that Lucas had lost the plot.

Attack of the Clones - Better than Phantom Menace but still awful.

Revenge of the Sith - A complete mess.

The Force Awakens - Was it a sequel? Was it a soft re-make of the first Star Wars? It was a decent attempt whatever it was and far superior to any of the prequels.

Rogue One - Arguably the best star Wars film since ESB. Although stories of re-writes, re-shoots and the changing of the entire final third act surrounded the development, it managed to be a good piece of work and addressed one of the "plot holes" from the original Star Wars

The Last Jedi - Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. Made by committee, re-written a few times, casting changes, directorial changes, re-shoots, ignoring almost all the events of the previous installment. Stupid side plots that went nowhere. Luke now a joke of character. Almost killed the franchise stone dead.

Solo - 100% pure pish.

Star Wars being bought by Disney looks to have been a false dawn.

FTA and Rogue 1 were decent enough then TLJ and Solo turned out to be bloody awful.

Nobody seems to know what to do with the franchise and the traditional fan base are losing faith.

If Episode 9 is a stinker, it's all over.

Reasonable critique...but personally thought Solo was decent, as was RotSith.  AotC not the worst either.  You could get away editing those three together clearing out a lot of the dross.

RotJ likewise.

You can simply ignore Phantom Menace entirely and still not miss a single thing.

In fact, eliminating it fixes many of the stupid things that Lucas added to the canon;

Darth Vader being born on Tatooine.

Darth Vader building C3-PO.

Only two Sith Lords existing at the same time.

The ability to use The Force being a fungal infection.

Ben Kenobi telling Luke "Anakin was a good friend. When I first knew him, your father was already a great pilot, but I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong." actually making sense again now that Phantom Menace has been removed.

Jar Jar feckin Binks ceases to exist.

And so on.

Then for RoTS, you can have Padme survive long enough to be sent into hiding on Alderaan but only given a few years to live, which fixes Leia's remembering her mother quote from RoTJ.

Looking forward to this one, people tend to critique these films a bit too hard due to the original 3 being treasured memories from their childhood,

Take them for what they are , kids films that adults can get away with watching :)

I agree with most of that although I must admit I really enjoyed Solo.

Last Jedi was alright. Same with Han Solo.

Solid great looking movies viaually. To be honest I hope the next one is just as good, what is good about them is story wise they have something. I felt episode 1-3 had virtually nothing story wise aside from Anakin becoming Darth Vader

Solo gets better with a re-watch.

TLJ was OK if you don't compare it to the brilliance of Rogue One.

ESB was and still is the daddy

I felt Rogue One did some of the things a New Hope did story wise so I actually prefer Last Jedi, which was a totally original film (some of it didn't work though I'd say)

Exciting to see what JJ can do as I think he's the right guy for the finale, he does action scenes in particular very well

I liked them too, they were funny and entertaining. They didn't make them prominent way out of their depth characters like they have with Jar Jar and the creatures in Return of The Jedi, maybe Star Wars is learning

I forgot that scene. Was that at the end? Ye it lost it had lost its way by then

True.  The kid blew up the Trade Federation control ship.  And everyone was amazed at Anakin's midichlorian levels.

My assessment of the Disney impact:

1 - Rogue one:  A genuinely great addition to the Star Wars film's easily the best of the new movies.

2- Solo;  Far better than box office and fan reaction have given credit for.  It got drowned in the negativity of the Last Jedi and came out too soon, why they didn't hold back for an Xmas release I don't know.  A real film for the fans, so many iconic moments to see and a dark and grimy star wars universe far more in  line with the original films.  Also threw up an interesting twist and its a shame they couldn't expand the story into another film.

3. The Force Awakens - A very enjoyable film that reignited the general love of the franchise.  Some good new characters, some good sharp writing, some scenes that will live long in the memory but the last 20 minutes was derivative and overshadowed the good work that came before.

4.  The Last Jedi - I really really struggled with this film.  Some strange plot choices (slow space chase/Casino planet) some strange character choices (Leia flying/Benecio Del Toro) and a bizarre attempt to undo all of what JJ Abrams had set up in the TFA.  I recognise that doing things differently is the right of a film maker but rejecting existing storylines for the sake of it felt forced (pardon pun).  Personally the biggest issue and one I cant get over is the treatment of Luke, a character I had waited to see on screen again since I was a little boy.   I didn't mind the part on the island so much but when he returned (spoiler alert) at the end only to be a force projection which killed him left me feeling robbed of something I had wanted to see and experience for as long as I can remember.  I think Rian Johnson badly underestimated the audience reaction to the handling of Luke.    I feel better having written that.

5  Rise of Skywalker - a good title, an intriguing trailer and good to have JJ back at the helm.  I suspect he will ignore much of what went in TLJ and tell his own Skywalker tale.  I am reassured by his claim this film will be a conclusion to all nine films rather than just these three.  As such this film should have plenty of references to the originals and prequels.    Just a shame Disney hadn't hired one director/writer to make sure all three films fitted seamlessly together as I suspect TLJ will also feel an unpopular anomaly.  But...that laugh at the end of the trailer - goose bumps, I am all in, again!

My tuppenceworth regarding TLJ / Luke...

From a storytelling / character development point of view, the removal of both Snoke and Luke makes sense, as both were more powerful in their abilities compared to Kylo and Rey. Keeping them in the main story handcuffs what you can do with Kylo/Rey.

So the main problem is, how do you get rid of Luke?

Personally I think Rian Johnson did about as well as he could.

Luke gets to be the hero, demonstrate how powerful he is and be a "badass" (which is apparently what the "fans" wanted) - without betraying his pacifist principles - but pays the ultimate sacrifice.

As for Episode 9...

JJ does not have a good track record of concluding stories satisfactorily IMO.

And his co-writer is the bloke who wrote Suicide Squad, Justice League and Batman V Superman.

So expect multiple characters called "Martha" and various past Jedi/Sith milling around in a waiting room...

JJ Abrams can make you a film and I think he's a great choice for hopefully an exciting finale.

Hopefully there's twists and turns that suprise everyone ?
