What's he been arrested for?

I thought the rape charge finished years ago?

Skipping bail. Doing a runner and hiding in the embassy.

I hope he's extradited to the U.S and sings on Trump.

His trial in America will be interesting.

Would have been better going to Sweden all these years ago.

Mental. Either the US were leaning hard on Ecuador or the boy was stinking out the bog too much.

That's the "further arrest". Original arrest was for skipping bail in 2012.

Guy will end up killing himself.

Which really means he'll be killed by those that oppose the truth he was spreading.

Good stuff.

Could have avoided all this by going to Sweden. Which seemed more cowardly than principled. Poorly advised perhaps.

Trial in US may help his cause though. Though they might do something different.

I'll wait till thread develops to help put the case against him.

What did he do, anyway. Published secrets? I don't really follow the story.

The material published has embarrassed a lot of governments. Fair enough. And the first information included a video of US soldiers firing on Iraqi civilians. Really good to expose.

But then they just dumped a mass of information. The stuff the young lad (now a woman) got the jail for till Obama pardoned him.

That information will have led to people say Afghan informants for the US being targeted, killed or imprisoned. That to me was unacceptable. Totally irresponsible.

Then there is his / Wikileaks links to Russia and others including Trump and some right wing groups including during the campaign versus Hilary Clinton including leaking her emails. That could make any trial interesting. Lots have speculated Trump would pardon him.

Curiously the original extradition request was from Sweden. Assange claimed asylum because he said Sweden might extradite him to US.

But now its US. As said UK and US are tight. Not sure if Sweden would have. So poor judgement all along perhaps.

But as said Assange surely would want a nice show trial in US to advertise everything he stands for.

Pretty sure he wont be relishing the thought of a US trial. That's why he was in the embassy in the first place .

Well exactly. The real reason for claiming asylum was to avoid facing the rape charges in Sweden. He knew a lot of idiots would swallow the guff about avoiding extradition to the US, even though it was always more likely that Britain would extradite him than Sweden would.

Can't really be guff about avoiding extradition to the US, since that's exactly what's transpired !

The Swedish charges were trumped up and now disappeared . Think he was right to fear extradition . Obviously thought he stood a better chance via UK / Ecuador.

Lots of interesting coverage on MSM yesterday. Will be extradited to U.S. on charges, will take a while for hearings etc. Some of the legal experts say the charges they are talking about just now involve his getting a password for the hacker, not serious, and some opine not even criminal as there is no suggestion he ac tually ha cked anything which is a crime. What was interesting was Trump who they showed in his Campaign expressing his love for Wikileaks on numerous occasions, showing documents he had received through Wikileaks, and yesterday he states he knows nothing about Wikileaks, never heard of them. If Assange is looking for help, its like Donald will throw the drowning man an anchor.

My client and I have just recieved the news that Assange has been arrested in London. It did understandably come as a shock to my client that what we have been waiting and hoping for since 2012 has now finally happened.

We are going to do everything we possibly can to get the swedish police investigation re-opened so that Assange can be extradited to Sweden and prosecuted for rape. No rape victim should have to wait 9 years to see justice be served.

The entire legal case is shaky AF.

Relies on a single interpretation of a couple of throwaway comments made years ago.

All about the USA lashing out against anybody uncovering their various war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nothing to do with the (also dodgy) sexual assault claims made in Sweden.

Will the arrest of Assange help hide the atrocities uncovered by Wikileaks?

Jokes aside , wonder if these  MURDERED  children and people would find your joke funny.

Over 100, 000 civilians dead, oh but , but , but its just civilian collateral damage,  (deaths).

: injury inflicted on something other than an intended target specifically : civilian casualties of a military operation. These example sentences are selected automatically from various online news sources to reflect current usage of the word 'collateral damage.' Views expressed in ...

Fecking brutal, mans inhumanity  to man and fecking children, you got kids have you.

"A U.S. diplomatic cable made public by WikiLeaks provides evidence that U.S. troops executed at least 10 Iraqi civilians, including a woman in her 70s and a 5-month-old infant, then called in an airstrike to destroy the evidence, during a controversial 2006 incident in the central Iraqi town of Ishaqi"

Good to publicise all that

They also published the names and addresses of informants. Does that suggest Wikileaks supports those who might kill them like say the Taliban. Or that they are as reckless as the trigger happy soldiers who killed civilians.

They unfortunately undo the potential good they could do by being so careless and endangering lives themselves.

USA only last week revoked the visa of an ICC investigator who was in the country collecting evidence of war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

International Law itself is at risk these days and if the USA can simply ignore it and receive no consequences for doing so, then the entire system is undermined and International Law ceases to be a thing.

(Not that this is AT ALL the first time the USA has ignored International Law, but covering up war crimes would be bad, even for them)

Would argue there's more good than harm done.

Innocent lives lost  reported by Wikileaks -   66,000 plus

Lives lost as a result of information uploaded to Wikileaks - none.

There also has to be journalistic freedom to responsibly publish truths about Guantanamo ; Scientology or whatever banking scandal's hitting the news, without fear of  shut down or arrest.

I definitely agree with your contention in a vacuum, it's just they keep doing this stuff where they dump everything without looking at it and it turns out to be secrets that actually ought to be secrets for the safety of those involved, as opposed to the secrets we as the public ought to be able to see, the ones governments make secrets to protect their own arses.

They suck. Far less badly than our governments and their shadiness, but they still suck, and I wish this stuff was getting into the hands of responsible people instead of them.

Wikileaks never existed in a vacuum though. Before most people had heard of them, they were feeding stories of corruption to The Guardian and later military data to the NY Times & Der Spiegel.

One argument  heard recently suggested , if Assange goes down - the MSM mentioned above, are also guilty.
